Insider's Look Into Personality

There are several beliefs of how a ninja should act. For Ronin, his idea of one is shared amongst those in his clan. According to Ronin, one has to have a deep understanding of their inner self. This self-awareness is one that allows one to pick up their strengths, weaknesses, and influences in both their lives and others. In his eyes, a ninja should be clear with their intentions, commitments and personal motivation in life. As a ninja, these are the personality traits that mean life and death in a ninja’s line of work. These personality traits are ones that Ronin possesses. One can say Ronin is the stereotypical ideal of what a ninja should be. Even Ronin himself admits this. However, there is one unusual trait that Ronin possesses that is viewed as being bizarre, considering who he is: his submission.

Being submissive is what Ronin considers to be a curse yet a blessing. It is a curse due to what I have stated previously. However, he viewed it as being a blessing due to the fact his skewed idea of what being submissive truly meant. In his eyes, those submissive know their place in the world and often rewarded for what they did. No one knows who twisted his understanding of submission. In his clan, submissive is an important thing if you wish to rise in rank and power. Outside of this, Ronin is shown to be a gentleman, and few can argue about that specific fact. He treats those of higher authority than himself with the utmost respect and courtesy and extends that same politeness to those around him. He has a high regard for the rules and expects he and others should follow them, often frowning upon rebellious acts (which is ironic considering the shit this frog has done) as a result. The male tends to keeps his personal feelings to himself and has an easier time listening to one's problem than talk about his own. It could be because he prefers not to talk about his problems. He has a bit of a temper that only pop up whenever things don't go his way. Despite being out in the world for quite some time, Ronin is still naïve when it comes to certain things in life and is only now learning what it means to be selfish through his interactions with Lewis.

Summary of Appearance

Ronin takes the form of a large, bipedal, frog-like Pokémon with the body type similar to that of a ninja. His body and legs are shown to be black, with single large white bubbles resting on his legs and arms. Those colors trick others into believing he is the shiny variety of his species. In actuality, he inherited the colors from his father. On the sides of each of his upper thighs is a light blue, four-pointed star that bears the resemblance to a shuriken. His webbed, back feet have two toes while his webbed, front feet have three toes. He possesses a white chest and a white-and-black face. Part of his right ear has a tear in it. His eyes are small with white sclerae, red irises, and white pupils. White spots resembling triangles rest above his eyes. A large, projecting black stripe runs down the middle of his head. Ronin lacks the webbing that rests between his ears that Greninja often has. Ronin is often seen wearing a black sleeveless top with a matching colored half skirt that goes down to his knees with a white trim. Completing the outfit are a pair of navy colored pants and a red scarf that is commonly either seen around waist that acts as a belt.

  • The scars on his neck, the missing chunk in his right ear and missing webbing between his ears came as a result of a fight he had with a Gabite when he was young.
  • Ronin's tongue is prehensile and acts as a third arm for Ronin. Ronin use this limb to grab things from afar or things he can't reach due to his height.
  • Ronin occasionally shifts the red scarf [Expert Belt] around his waist to his neck whenever he feels insecure about anyone seeing his scars.
  • Ronin's appearance change depending on what moves he use in battle. The forms can be seen here and here

Story

Summary

The Exile. TV Tropes describes this concept as being someone being "caught committing a crime" that "caused too much property damage, or pissed the wrong people off." The resulting punishment for this crime is that they are"forced to leave his city, state, or country, and never come back." Ronin is an example of this specific character. Ronin is an ex-clan member of the Gekkouga Family (a family of primarily Pokémon from the Froakie line) as a result of an incident that occurred after he lost to a Gabite from a rival clan. It was a disheartening experience for Ronin that left the male to develop a hatred for dragon Pokémon. With his mark of shame being the scars on his neck he received from the battle, Ronin spent the five years of his life, roaming the world. He had no choice in the matter. He didn't have friends outside of his clan, and this was probably the only chance he had to see the horrors and the beauty this world has to offer to him before he decided to settle down. Seeing these would allow the male to grow and figure out a way to survive in the world.

After those six years, the male eventually settled down in Neoma. Neoma is a city that acted as central headquarters of a guild that he worked him (but refuse to join): the Union. Ronin finally established a name for himself. Well at least enough of a name so he can get jobs. By day, he works as a bounty hunter. Taking jobs from questionable individuals, the male spent time capturing criminals for their bounty. By night, he works as an assassin, killing targets for financial gain as well as getting rid of the 'filth' that toxic the world.

It wasn't until recently that Ronin's life changed when he met Lewis. Unknown to them, the two were a bounded pair known as 'The Baile'. Bounded Pairs were two or more fated individuals that were supposedly meant to be together for eternity as the 'Gods' have chosen it. Those bounded are considered bless as a result. However, very few realize they are bounded pair as there are very few that exist in the world. Not only that but information regarding bounded pairs is quite scarce, so it was hard to know what benefits and hindrances it had to offer.

It doesn't help that Ronin and Lewis are stubborn when it comes to accepting the fact they are bounded.

The History of a Frog

Ronin was born in Village of Kaiyō within the Seikatsu Forest. The Seikatsu Forest is the forest that is said to be the resting place of the Bringer of Life: Xerneas. The Pokémon that live in this forest are supposedly blessed by the Deer God with a longer lifespan and protection against the Bringer of Death: Yveltal. The Village of Kaiyo is the home of the Gekkouga Clan, a clan consisting of primarily Pokémon from the Froakie Line. Very few are able to enter this village without the permission of one of the clan leaders. After all, the clan looked down on outsiders of the clan and feared about dealing with the possibility of someone betraying them.

Ronin is the son of Namako (father) and Kazumi (mother) that hatched during the beginning of spring. Ronin is an extraordinary child in their eyes. With colors of his father and a hidden ability very few of the Gekkouga Family possessed, Ronin’s parents always felt they were blessed to have a child of utmost beauty and thanked Bringer of Life for the creation of the frog. With their influence, they ensured their child was carefully pampered by themselves and the other clan members. For Namako, he wanted the best for his son. For Kazumi, she felt she needed to treat the male as a prince that the clan needed to please to ensure the male won't become tyrannical when he takes over her position as a clan leader.

Now, this isn’t to say that Ronin had a simple life. When the male was around seven, Kazumi was quick to focus on the male training to become a proper Gekkouga. After all, the male was growing up and the time to enjoy childhood was dwindling by the day. The training itself did lead to Ronin gaining new responsibilities. The young man would no longer rely on his parents to do what he now had the capability to do. The young child had to learn how to defend himself. He had to grow up. Ronin struggle to accept this but kept pushing forward. After all, he wanted to please his parents.

However, this training made it harder for him to enjoy the rest of what childhood had to offer to him. In his eyes, he saw that enjoying childhood was wasting his time. Well at least that’s something he assumed was the case with how his mother was training him. As a result, the male ended up growing up much faster to the point that by the time he was a teen, he had a mind of an adult. It wasn’t unusual for those in the Gekkouga Clan, but that certainly didn’t mean it was that healthy especially for someone in Ronin’s position. Pleasing his parents was a priority for the male. His father was easy to please, but his mother was another story.

An example of this would be his evolution into a Frogadier. The development itself happened when he was dueling with his brother [Hanzo] when Ronin was eight. After dealing with the headache of Hanzo’s trickery, Ronin eventually snapped and evolved from his sheer rage. The new evolution allowed Ronin to overpower his older brother due to becoming wiser and stronger. While Namako was pleased by his son’s evolution, Kazumi was indifferent. Maybe even disappointed because it took rage for her son to evolve. It was a low blow to Ronin’s pride but pushed the male to focus his attempts on satisfying his mother’s expectations. Hell, he went so far as to evolve into a Greninja at the young age of 14. This was certainly an impressive feat as most Frogadier in his clan become Greninja in their early twenties. This did impress Kazumi especially how quickly Ronin was learning his lessons. Despite caring for all of her kids, it soon became clear that Ronin became her favorite.

However, all of this would soon end on that fateful day when Ronin was 18.

The Gekkouga Clan was challenged to a duel by the Gaburias Clan. The Gaburias Clan was a family consisting of members of the Gible line. They were the rival clan of Gekkouga and often battled each other once every few months. Pitting the strongest member of each clan against each other, these battles were used as a means to gain unclaimed territory for their respective clan. That day was one of those battles where Ronin and a Gabite pitted against each other. It was supposed to be an easy win for Ronin. He had the advantage of understanding how to fight dragon Pokémon as his mother had specifically trained him to be able to handle those of the Gaburias Clan. Not only that but Ronin was fully evolved so he should’ve been able to handle this.

So imagine the Gekkouga Clan shock when Ronin lost.

The battle was not a pleasant one as both opponents as they seemed to always find a way to outsmart the other. It was a messy one that resulted in Ronin to get the scars he has today. However, in the end, the Gabite was the one who ended up winning the battle. Gabite certainly didn’t cheat to get his victory. The Gabite won due to taking advantage of Ronin's Protean by striking him with a move he was weak to at the time. Ronin was not pleased by this, and rage boiled within him. A rage similar to the one he had when he was a Frogadier that was created from the built of the built-up stress from receiving new responsibilities from his parents and being viewed as a failure in front of his clan. This rage resulted in the male lashing out at Gabite with the sheer purpose of beating the living shit out of the Pokémon.

Unfortunately, he never got far in his attempt as his clan members were quick to pull him off. Kazumi and Namako confronted the male for what he did and bickered with him over what he did. For Namako, he was upset that his son disrespected the Gabite by attacking him when the battle was over. For Kazumi, she was upset that Ronin’s childish actions had brought shame to the clan and they would have to apologize to their rival clan for what he did. The bickering ended with Kazumi denouncing Ronin from the clan and demanding for the male to never return. It hurt, but Ronin accepted it was his own fault that he caused his mother to make that decision. After being healed of his wounds and packing whatever necessity he needed, Ronin left the place he once called home. However, despite the mental heartache he felt, Ronin was excited about the idea of seeing the world that he wasn’t allowed to see in his village. However, he was also scared at the idea of failing to survive in the world due to being haunted by his failure of controlling his rage.

It has been six years since he left his village and Ronin started a new life in the city of Neoma. By day, he is a bounty hunter. By night, he is an assassin. Life for Ronin was certainly decent from the male. To think, all of that change when he met Lewis.

Fighting style

If there is someone ask you what Greninja is known for, one would cite their speed. Ronin is no different. Ronin is a fast Pokémon. While his speed is nothing like Ninjask, it's not something to ignore. This makes the male quite deadly as most of his attacks are ones that he can use on the fly and capable of using at varying distances. As such, a slow, physical attacker will have a much harder time dealing with him. In terms of Dnd, Ronin fighting style can be described as being akin to a Rouge. He is adept in the several ninja arts: Intonjutsu (Escape and Concealment), Boryaku (Strategy), Shinobi-iri (Stealth and Entering Methods) and Sui-ren (water training). Ronin specializes in mastering the use of a variety of these skills to perfect his combat ablities. This refinement allows Ronin to act as a jack-of-all-trades. Ronin prioritize cunning tactics over brute strength. He doesn't like the idea of rushing into battle. Ronin has some slight water manipulation in terms of manipulating the shape of water. Unlike those in his clan, he's not that adept in the art.

Strengths

  • Can change his types through Protean
  • Comes with various ranged based moves
  • Comes with very high speed
  • Can often be very creative with his tactics

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't have the best defenses
  • Can easily snap under pressure
  • Has no problem lashing out at dragon types
  • Will break down when exposed to snakes
Protean [Ability]
Natural ABility

Difficulty
Mastery

Some members of the Kecleon and Froakie line, these Pokemon are gifted with a interesting ability besides the one that most of the two lines are known to have: Protean. With this ability, Ronin can change his type to correspond with the move that he is about to use. The change in type causes a few benefits to occur such as replacing whatever weakness one originally have and boosting the strength they are about to use (STAB). Protean will activate even if the move misses, is blocked by a protection move, or fails to affect the opponent. However, it can fail to activate through the following ways: if the move fails, if the execution is interrupted entirely, if the move is prevented by heavy rain or extremely harsh sunlight, or if the move is prevented by Powder.

Tera Blast
Learned Skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Tera Blast is a damaging physical Normal-type move that Ronin learned from a technical machine that his mother gave him. When this move is used, Ronin draws on the elemental energy of the land and lets it out in a blast of energy. Tera Blast is a fascinating move as it is one where the category changes based on which is higher between Ronin's physical and special attack. However, that's not the only thing it can do. When Ronin eventually learns about the mechanics of Terastal phenomenon, the typing of the moves changes to that of Dragon. As you can probably guess, Ronin isn't much of a fan of that, given his hatred for dragons. When used outside of the Terastal phenomenon, Ronin's typing shifts to that of a normal type.

Gunk Shot
Learned Skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Gunk Shot is a damage-dealing physical Poison-type move that Ronin learned how to use from a Muk. When used, Ronin becomes a poison type. Gunk Shot is a move that Ronin doesn't really use too often as the accuracy isn't the greatest in the world. To use this move, Ronin puts his hands together as silver light starts sparkling between them. The light then turns into a black bag outlined in purple, which he hurls at the opponent. It explodes on impact, sending pieces of purple-glowing sludge flying at the enemy. This attack has a chance of poisoning an enemy if it makes contact. It’s far from being a weak attack; in fact, it’s one of Ronin’s strongest moves. However, this move can take a lot out of him to use.

Scald
Learned Skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Scald is a damage-dealing special Water-type move that Ronin learned through a technical machine he received as a gift from his father. When used, Ronin becomes a water type. Scald is the main move that Ronin constantly uses in battle. To use this move, Ronin raises his hand and fires releases a stream of scalding hot water surrounded by steam at the opponent. This move has a high chance of inflicting a burn and can thaw out ice. Scald is a move that a large portion of water type Pokémon with high special attack seems to consider learning due to the added benefit of the burn. After all, those burns will take damage almost every minute and so, and the damage these burned Pokémon deal with physical moves is halved.

Dark Pulse
Learned Skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Dark Pulse is a damage-dealing special Dark-type move that Ronin learned through a technical machine he received as a reward from a job he was on. When used, this move turns Ronin into a dark type. Dark Pulse is a move that Ronin taught himself to satisfy the fact he is part dark type. Now there are two ways for Ronin to actually use this move. One way involves Ronin to puts his hands together and forms a small black ball of energy. He then separates his hands and fires a beam of black and purple circles at the opponent from the ball. The other way involves Ronin slamming his hand against the ground, sending a wave of black energy towards the enemy. Regardless of what way he uses, there is that chance Ronin could cause an enemy to flinch.

Ice Beam
Learned Skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Ice Beam is a damage-dealing special Ice-type move that Ronin learned through a technical machine he received as a gift from his mother. When used, this move turns Ronin into an ice type. Ice Beam is the main move that Ronin tends to use in a situation where Protean is suppressed. This move helps with dealing with Pokémon that are often strong against him in his regular form. To use this move, a light blue ball form in Ronin's hands. Thrusting his hand forward, the ball fires light blue beams from the ball at the opponent. The move does have a chance to freeze those when it makes contact with the foe. Ronin enjoy using ice beam when it comes to keeping an enemy from running off thanks to its chance to freeze those that the move makes contact with.

Extrasensory
Natural Skill

Difficulty
Mastery

Extrasensory is a damaging special Psychic-type move that the Greninja line can naturally learn. When used, this move turns Ronin into a psychic type. It is one of the two naturally learned moves that Ronin himself has decided to keep for himself. To use this move, Ronin eyes glow gold and raises his hand. He then fires a rainbow-colored beam from the palm of his hand at the opponent. There is that small chance for a Pokémon to be flinched by this move. Ronin is one of the few Greninja in his family that decided to use this move as others find this move to be useless. Ronin cite he learned this move to prove that any move can be useful. Ironic, considering he has stated that other moves that Greninja can naturally learn are useless.

Inventory

Expert Belt

Ronin's prize possession is his 'Expert Belt'. This item is one of the two that he brought with his younger brother, Raiden when they were young. This belt represents his bond between his brother and something Ronin constantly wears. When worn, this item slightly boosts the power of super effective moves. In other words, if Ronin were to use a move with a type advantage against another, it would be powerful.

Bandages of the Punished

When Ronin isn't wearing his scarf or his tongue around his neck, he tends to have a bandages covering it. He isn't a fan of anyone seeing his neck as he's feel great shame at being reminded of what caused him to be expelled from his clan. To him, looking at the scars of his neck makes him feel like a faliure and he finds it's difficulty to seperate himself from that feeling. As such, for his sake, he makes sure to have bandages at hand.

Trivia

General

  • Ronin was originally going to have the inability to speak due to the Gabite he fought destroying his vocal cords.
  • Ronin is the first generation six Pokemon that I ever made.
  • Ronin will always duck his head behind his tongue/scarf whenever he's feeling flustered or embarrassed.

Combat

  • Ronin can manipulate water to the point he can create a water blade. However, it's nothing to the level of his mother.
  • Ronin originally wasn't going to have Protean as an ability since I wasn't confident on working out how to write it.
  • Ronin's fighting style is based on another ninja-based character that I happen to have.

Social

  • It was originally planned for Ronin to be banished from his clan as a result of disturbing a sacred blade (Honedge) named Muramasa.
  • Ronin tend to use Japanese honorifics when talking to other people. It's something that he has been taught to do constantly by his parents.
  • I been pretty consistent when it comes to working out Ronin's character.

Design

  • Ronin was originally going to be a Shiny Pokemon but, this was changed to reflect the fact his colors were that of his father's color scheme.
  • Ronin was orginally intended to be taller than Lewis.
  • The idea of having Protean changing one's appearance is something I figure would be a nice touch to explore with Ronin.

There are many people that Ronin hates. Thankfully, Lewis isn't one of them despite Ronin's initial reaction of him. Initially, Ronin sees Lewis as being a "sneaky rabbit with the nice voice". It doesn't help that Lewis enjoys teasing Ronin about concepts that Ronin manage to avoid exploring. The teasing also extends to Lewis flirting with him at every chance he can. Despite all of this, Ronin looks up to Lewis espesically when it comes to his knowledge of the world. He also also cares deeply for the male especially when it comes down to Lewis' 'curse' and what he dealt with for decades. It's hard to say that Ronin loves him as Ronin doesn't understand the meaning of love itself. He has a long way to go before he can understand it.

Ronin absolutely loves Jasper. Ever since he adopted the young Sableye, Ronin is always giddy whenever he's around the strange mutt. Jasper is Ronin's first pet and satisfies Ronin's childhood dream of owning a feral. In his clan, very few were allowed to own ferals as they were considered to be tainted due to their nature. That was the one thing that Ronin never understood as a feral could be domesticated/trained. Not all ferals were all that bad in his eyes. One can argue that Ronin would probably have an entirely different experience had he ended up with an older feral Pokemon or had encountered a feral Pokemon that wasn't acting out of its nature.

He spent whatever time he can, teaching the boy what he needed to learn about in the world while helping him enjoy life by getting him the things he never had the chance to have. In some ways, he carried the deep desire to be better parent than his mother when it came to caring for a child in a healthy way.

Lucius' and Ronin's relationship is a complex one. To say they hate each other would only be a portion of an explanation of their relationship. Lucius' and Ronin's conversation is filled with snark and the occasional backhanded comment with a bit of witty banter. For Ronin, he is wary of Lucius. He is mated with his brother for the sole purpose of using Raiden as a tool to try to recover his memories and get Pokemon off his back about marriage. At least that's Ronin assume is the case. Even with Ronin banished, the two regularly stay with contact with each other through letters delivered by the Union. Ronin views Raiden as his younger brother and always teaches Raiden things he feels will help the younger male in the future. The male can be a bit of a mother hen towards his younger brother. This mother hen side of Ronin always pops up whenever the male sees his younger brother and his mate.

It should be no surprise to anyone that Ronin has a strong hatred for Ryujin. I mean he is Garchomp and frankly Ronin hates the Gible line. It certainly doesn't help that Ryujin is a Pokemon that Lucius personally trained. Ryujin tries very hard to avoid interacting with Ryujin whenever he can. That often can be quite difficult with Japser going out of his way to interact with him. Lewis often has to hold Ronin back from lashing out against the Ryujin whenever Ryujin plays a bit too hard with Jasper. After all, the last thing that Lewis needs is to deal with a Garchomp lashing out at Ronin and two Pokemon getting really upset with Ronin.

He often gives his brother advice on how to raise kids based on what he know from the times he had to occasionally help watch over a few. As such, they have a shaky partnership with the two not really communicating with each other unless they have to. To him, he feels as if he's better off never meeting him. However, Lewis is working to at least get him to the point where he doesn't get into a argument with him over little things. As such, he and Lewis knew the moment they learned his backstory that they were going to adopt him into the family. Ronin wasn't all that interested with having Rigel when he first met him. After all, he didn't have time to dealing with a potentially evil blade. He had a rescue mission to focus on. However, at Rigel's offer of giving him more power and his assistance of finding who he was looking for, Ronin ended up giving in. Of course, he made sure that Rigel didn't attempt to try to possess since that's just rude. Ronin sees Rigel as being that one coworker that is good at their job even if they can be a sassy bitch about it.
