Sage

"Manners are for men who are insecure about where they lie. I know where I belong. It's thrown out back with the rest of the scrap."

Sage is well-educated, but he never cared much for applying the manners he was taught so rigorously.  He's very good at putting on an act for a short time to come across as presentable, but he's ill-mannered and makes things up off the top of his head with ease. He doesn't always know what he's doing even if he thinks he's very smart. He just wants some good company but he doesn't want to admit how lonely he is. 

The man now known as "Sage" was once in line for the thrown, but he was disinherited because of his interest in dark magic. He believes that while there is a sinister-ness to it, it can still be used for good. But his beliefs were radical, and he was exiled from the main kingdom. He misses his family dearly, but he can't go back to them, so he keeps them safe from a distance, the best he can.

Previously was a tutor for his younger brother, who is now prince (and soon to be king). Even while he was in the castle and in line for the throne, he was known to misbehave. 

Now he is off on his own, experimenting outside the kingdom to come up with good uses for his magic. The name "Pennman" comes from his habit of writing. He has taken up writing manuscripts of his studies in dark magic. He also likes to take accounts of the lives of the interesting people he meets. 

He is often viewed as a bit of a trickster. He likes a good amount of play before he gets down to business. But he's often accused for more than he's actually done.....or has he done more than he's actually accused for?  He did trap a woman in a body of a crow. (See links)
