This Alternate Universe, or AU takes place during and after My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, however this AU was created before the creation of Season 9 and therefore is different in that regard. I was also never active in watching the show itself, so this can only be considered to be loosely connected to the MLP universe at this point. That means, yes, some events will be out of order or missing entirely. Last thing: This is my own personal headcannons mixed with inspiration from other AU's and stories that I've heard about over the years! This means, some of the information I have in here may sound similar to several online personality's version and is uncredited. I would like to point out that this is for my personal use and is not intended to steal or rip off and is just for my own enjoyment and should be read with an open mind! Thank you! :D</p>
Background information about this AU:
The name ‘Legacy AU’ was chosen because the Alicorns in this world were no longer held to a certain standard of only a few core rulers, especially for Celestia and Luna. They could finally create a legacy through their descendants.
Alicorns age normally from conception to around their 20’s or so, from there they age much slower, about 3:1 years until their late 20’s (in Alicorn years) where they stop aging entirely. During the slower phases of their aging, they will grow to their full height. Alicorns are immortal though they are not invincible.
Year 0:
This is a time where time itself had no meaning, not to the immortal beings anyways. Until the three pony tribes started recording history, any events during this time will be labeled in order of occurrence and not by year until Year 1.
1: The Alicorn, Chaos and Mortal realms where created, divided.
2: The Great (and forgotten) Battle of the Chaos-bringers.
3: The youngest of the Alicorn Children, Chrysalis, and Castelle were sent to the Mortal Realm for protection. They would never return to their home realm. Age is all relative, most of them were near or young adults.
Year 1:
The day the Alicorns arrived to the Mortal realm. Because this was such a momentous moment in history, it became the first thing that ponies, particularly the Unicorn Tribe wrote down. This became January 1st and has been the standard calendar of 12 months. These ‘Kingdoms’ were mostly the size of small cities which is why they were created so quickly.
January: The Sun and Moon cycles became consistent, the Sun controlled by Alicorn Galaxia and the Moon by Alicorn Astra. The extreme land-based natural disasters were calmed and controlled by Alicorn Blaise and Alicorn Ignitara.
March: Both Country Canterlot and the Insect Kingdom were established, Canterlot consisting of mostly Unicorns from the Unicorn Tribe and the Insect kingdom of converted ponies of any race to that of ancient insect ponies. Canterlot was ruled by Queen Galaxia and King Astra and the Insect Kingdom ruled by Queen Chrysalis.
May: Pyrohera was established by King Blaise and Queen Ignitara with their young son Prince Feugo. Pyrohera consisted mostly of Earth Ponies and Pegasi.
July: The Ocean Kingdom of Aqualera was established by Alicorn and Queen Helina, the residents being fishing towns and water-based creatures.
Year 3:
April: The Crystal City was established, led by King Garnet and Queen Esmerelda. Their population is also mostly Earth Pony, the residents granted their now signature crystal forms.
Year 12:
By this year, all of the main pony Kingdoms have been established, each with their own elemental theme and set of rulers. Some of these Kingdoms would survive to become the modern countries we know today.
Year 15:
July: Princess Celestia was born to King Astra and Queen Galaxia.
Year 18:
September: Princess Luna was born to King Astra and Queen Galaxia.
Year 33:
Almost all remnants of the original pony tribes have been absorbed into the five kingdoms and each kingdom has grown substantially in land and population and are more stable individually.
March: Princess Mi Amore Cadenza was born to King garnet and Queen Esmerelda.
Year 34:
The start of the downfall for Kings and Queens. This is the start of the second Great Battle of the Chaos-Bringers. Somewhere in the timeline of the next decade, the memory of Aqualera has been completely wiped from Earth, it’s residents and ruler just disappearing.
January: Princess Carlina was born to Queen Chrysalis.
October: The Chaos-Bringers invade the Mortal Realm.
December: The Insect Kingdom Surrenders by Queen Castelle’s word. The population of the Insect Kingdom was reduced to hive-minded Changelings.
Year 35:
Queen Esmerelda and Princess Cadenza were encased in a magical crystal in suspended animation and life. This crystal’s magic was being upheld by the Queen’s magic alone. Not but a few days later, the Crystal Empire has fallen to the Chaos. King Garnet was killed in his own throne room. The castle that the Crystal Royal Family lived in was demolished, it’s stone walls becoming like a stone and earthen tomb.
Year 36:
After a year and a half of being used as agents of Chaos, Chrysalis froze herself, Castelle, Carlina, and the remaining changelings underground in their castle, drawing her magic from the area around her causing a void space in magic around the castle.
Year 38:
In a huge battle taking place directly over the Fire Castle, both King Blaise and Queen Ignitara were killed. In a blast of rogue magic from the fight, Prince Feugo was petrified for the next 1,500 or so years.
Year 39:
The two princess sisters Celestia and Luna go into hiding, with only a handful of servants. They expected to have to supply themselves with their own food and materials and were prepared to live in solitude without contact from outsiders for at least a year or more.
Year 42:
Nearly all of the Chaos Bringers were destroyed, the last remnants of the chaotic beings gathering to fight the strongest of the kingdoms, Country Canterlot. This battle would last a year.
Year 43:
Almost 9 years since the beginning of The Battle of the Chaos-Bringers, the war finally ended with the heroic and tragic deaths of King Astra and Queen Galaxia. The kingdom was left to their children, Celestia and Luna, however they couldn’t be found. Only the king and queen themselves knew where they had gone, along with those who were with the two sisters. Until then, the kingdom would be ruled by various leaders.
Year 56:
Celestia and Luna, now 38 and 29 respectively, had waited more than two decades before coming out of hiding. They had gotten used to their lifestyle and had resisted going home, though after the original servants that had come with them had all passed away from age, they finally had nothing to lose but themselves. Traveling back to Canterlot, they would find the mess of a country and were immediately put back on the throne out of necessity. They would continue to rule over Country Canterlot and the Crystal Empire for the next hundred years or so. They would also gain their cutiemarks this year, Celestia for control of the Sun and Luna of the Moon.
Year 79:
Country Canterlot was renamed Equestria, which was now nearly the size it is in modern days, the lost kingdoms absorbed into the new kingdom. The original Canterlot was transformed into the capital city which it still is today.
Year 124:
Celestia and Luna had taken in a young stallion named Sombra as their student, his magic extremely powerful. By the next year, he had used the access he had gained to the royal library to learn dark magic. In just a few months, he had all of the Crystal Empire under his control.
Year 125:
King Sombra was defeated and what was left of the Crystal Empire disappeared entirely.
Year 147:
Disagreements between Celestia and Luna start, the beginnings of the creation of Nightmare Moon.
Year 152:
Indigo Sky was born to Princess Luna, in secret.
Year 161:
This is the start of a civil war in Equestria, the Sun and Moon cycles becoming more irregular by the year.
July: Luna transforms into Nightmare Moon and the same day attempts to destroy Indigo Sky in a fit of rage and fear of future opposition, removing Indigo Sky’s wings, memories, and sight through spells. Then deciding this wasn’t enough, turned her to stone. Nightmare Moon confronts Celestia.
August: Nightmare Moon claims part of Equestria and gathers supporters, mostly in the bat-pony communities and has set up her own government. By late August, fighting has begun between the Celestial and Lunar armies, back and forth.
Year 165:
December: The Elements of Harmony are created and used to banish Nightmare Moon and Luna to the moon for the next 1,000 years. Celestia, by using the powers of the Elements of Harmony gets her signature blue, green, and pink flowing mane.
Year 166:
January: The Lunar armies, forts, and territories have been disbanded and reclaimed by the Celestial Army and Celestia Equestria. Bat ponies go into hiding. Over the next 1000 years, the Bat Pony population would be reduced significantly though not entirely gone.
Year 167:
Discord is empowered by the confusion and chaos of the civil war and starts wreaking havoc on pony civilizations. He is turned to stone by Celestia utilizing the Elements of Harmony.
Year 1142:
Cadence and Queen Esmerelda are released from their crystalline hibernation. Queen Esmerelda, weakened by the centuries of maintaining the crystal barely manages to get herself to the nearest village to request that baby Princess Mi Amore Cadenza be taken to the current rulers of the country. This was Celestia. In the next month, Princess Cadence was brought to Celestia and put in her care as an adopted niece.
Year 1165:
Nightmare Moon returns after a 1,000 year-long banishment and is destroyed by the Elements of Harmony by the Six. This releases Indigo Sky from her stony hibernation, though the other curses placed on her did not get dispelled.
Year 1166:
Nearly 1,000 years later, Discord is released from petrification prematurely from acts of chaos near his statue giving him power. He is defeated again by the Elements of Harmony and is turned to stone, however was released a few weeks later and turned docile enough to remain existing within the modern Equestria. This same year, not but months later, Chrysalis and the changelings are released from their own hibernation underground. Sometime during the later months of this year Princess Cadence is trapped in some underground mines and Chrysalis takes her place.
Year 1167:
Princess Mi Amore Cadenza and Captain of the Royal Guard, Shining Armor get married. Chrysalis reveals herself and launches an attack on Canterlot. She is later defeated and retreats back to her castle which is still surrounded by the magical void space. During this year, Reformed Changelings are created, led by King Thorax. Those who did not reform followed Queen Castelle, believing that Chrysalis was incapable due to her loss in the battle in Canterlot. This launched a war between reformed and non-reformed Changelings. This would lead to the capture of Chrysalis and Carlina. Because Carlina was half pony and half changeling, she could not ‘reform’ though she didn’t need to, she wasn’t a hive mind and she didn’t feed from love. Chrysalis could be restored back to her original state when she first came to the mortal realm and was allowed back into the throne after King Thorax was assassinated. The battle between Changelings would lead to a tense draw, both sides prepared to launch back into war, Chrysalis against Castelle.
Year 1168:
March: King Sombra returns alongside the Crystal Empire and is defeated, turning him and anything made from his dark magic to dust and smoke. Princess Cadence and Prince Shining armor would be made leaders of the Crystal Empire.
August: Twilight Sparkle would be made an Alicorn and her castle erected.
December: Princess Flurry Heart would be born to Princess Cadence and Prince Shining Armor.
Year 1169:
Indigo managed to get herself into the attention of the Princesses from her unusually powerful and elemental magic. She would then have the curses placed on her removed by Princess Luna and would reunite as mother and daughter, Princess Indigo Sky forgiving her mother and coronated.
Year 1175:
By this year, all of the non-pony civilizations, including the Hippogriffs from the Ancient kingdom of Aqualera have returned to the spotlight. The former Alicorn Queen cannot be found, no one from Aqualera, now called Hippogriffia knows about or remembers who she was, where she went and why she disappeared.
May: Princess Amethyst Snow would be born to Princess Cadence and Prince Shining Armor.
September: Fluttershy and Discord would be privately married with only a small attendance of family, friends, and the Princesses.
Year 1178:
Prince Feugo from the ancient kingdom of Pyrohera is broken from his stone prison, the ancient and incredibly powerful magic from the Chaos-Bringers finally wearing off. He joins the Equestrian Court and aids Princess Celestia and occasionally Princess Twilight with their daytime royal duties. Mostly, he was tasked with disaster aftermath support and prevention.
June: Princess Indigo Sky and Cobalt Sky marry, Cobalt earning the title of Prince.
Year 1186:
Prince Feugo and Princess Celestia had childhood crushes on each other, and when Prince Feugo had returned those feelings rekindled. Although he was technically much younger than Celestia, they are both adult and fully grown Alicorns.
May: The royal wedding for Princess Celestia and Prince Feugo takes place, one of the grandest weddings there could possibly be.
October: Lana is born to Fluttershy and Discord, the first half pony half draconequus.
Year 1187:
February: Princess Felicity is born to Celestia and Feugo.
Year 1188:
Back in the Alicorn dimension, Chrysalis had another daughter who was a true insect pony. She had been unaffected by the changeling curse because she was on a different plane of existence. Sometime while the changeling war was in a stalemate, Chrysalis had been able to reopen the rift between the two dimensions to visit her daughter and old friends. Time passes much slower in the Alicorn dimension so she had only been gone just over a decade for them. The chaos war there had ceased only a year ago and the original alicorn’s parents were eager to have their children come back. Chrysalis delivered the news, telling them about the time rate differences, the kingdoms that had been built, and the tragic deaths of all of the original alicorns. She and Castelle were the only ones left from that generation. Lidia, Chrysalis’ daughter came back with her mother, having been left an orphan while she was gone. Lidia would eventually be coronated and reinstated to be the heir to the crown for the Changelings.
Year 1189:
Princess Twilight sparkle and Darwin are married, Darwin titled prince and turned into a full alicorn, granting him the wings he had been missing through unfortunate genetics.
July: Amaranth is born to Fluttershy and Discord.
Year 1190:
December: Princess Selena is born to Twilight Sparkle and Darwin.
Year 1194:
January: Princess Soliel is born to Celestia and Feugo.
Year 1199:
March: Princess Angel is born to Twilight and Darwin.
Year 1200:
August: Princess Solaris Mayella is born to Celestia and Feugo.
Year 1207:
Present year.
