this event is over.

Every year, as the bounties of the growing season are harvested and Ivras prepares for the coming freeze, an unusual celebration brings some joy to the chore of packing away winter stores. What originally began as swapping stories to distract from the toil has evolved into a celebration of folklore, theater, and imagination. During the Harvest Masquerade, stories come to life as Ivras gives thanks for a successful harvest, and wishes for a well-fed winter.

Just before the cold arrives, a great festival is held in the capital city of Faline. Streets and squares become stages and ballrooms as dances, puppets, and parades take over the city. Plays and performances are held sometimes without announcement, blending in with the crowds, making reality and fantasy difficult to distinguish.

Legend says that winter brings more than mere cold and famine; the spirits that wander the world go hungry in the lean months too. Good sense dictates that when gathering to celebrate a fruitful harvest, one should wear a disguise so that the famished and envious spirits won't know you or your wealth during the wintertime.

Some revelers wear masks to deceive the spirits. Some dress as spirits to honor them, or even leave offerings for hungry wanderers. Some don disguises simply to enjoy a new reality, and borrow a life as something else for a while.

As you gather around the fire to tell tales, watch the pageants, and take in the sights and sounds that will give you comfort for the long freeze, who will you be?

🔸🎭🔸 Mage Story Prompt:

The celebration in the streets is dazzling. Your character's attention is cast upward to acrobatic figures on stilts moving through chutes of colored sparks, spectacular against the dark night sky. Colored smoke, live music, and hollering actors make the fantastical scene feel vast and inescapable.

As a flurry of dancers whirl past, one of them dips close to your character. The performer lifts their tasseled mask away, revealing a brightly painted face complete with the huge teeth of Fortune's smile. Their lips pucker inside the painted grin. They blow a glittering powder into your character's face, sending your character sputtering and wheeling away.

The festival spins around them like a wheel, becoming a blurry river of light and noise. The colored sparks and smoke are suddenly smothering, and the masked faces around them, once whimsical, blur into something terrifying. Fighting to stay upright, they see a world far stranger than the one they know.

Whether the visions are from poison, chemistry, or honest-to-Grace magic, what does your character see?

  1.  I see spirits, and beings beyond imagining, and I stop to admire them. Your character receives +1 Discipline.

  2. I see performers, magicians, or acrobats of great skill, and I am compelled to best them. Your character receives +1 Power.

  3. I see strangers, moving quickly, coming to hurt me and take what's mine. Your character receives +1 Corruption.

  4. I see figures dancing freely, unbound by reservation, and I race to join them. Your character receives -1 Cost. If your character already has 0 Cost, you may choose to take +1 Corruption instead.

Prompt responses must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Upload your response like any other art or literature submission, tag this character profile, and claim your gold; collect double your total count for prompt responses. Responses to this prompt should be done individually, one character per response.
