Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

Okay so I know theres always been a debate regarding "stealing art styles" and what not. I don't want to get into that specific topic

But I think a lot of people can see/agree when an artist is shamelessly trying to make profit by copying a popular artist style to make money or gain attention.

That's very obvious and imo I find that wrong. That's what I don't like about people copying artists styles. Especially when they've never drawn like that before

Idk it just seems like a cheap cash-grab and would rather see their original "style"

I don't know if this fits in here but I'll try my hat anyway cause why not?

I don't like it when someone purchases a character then applies their own art to it saying it boosts the "value"? And resells for more? Idk

-Most art communities. The gatekeeping is so bad sometimes they can be outright hostile (like DA) if people don't adhere to the general groupthink. There's also bad moderation and lack of user interaction that just discourages newcomers who try to improve and reach out for help. Screw the mob mentality when those types just do so much mental damage to young starters. Being frank, no one cares for useless drama, so don't start it.

-Art tutorials. The ones that do the "draw like this". It seems restrictive and limiting. There's so many ways to draw things, and using someone's stylized art could be hindering when not going back to the old basics of studying real life. I also hate the advice of "practice drawing everyday", not counting for burnout.

-The old "you copied my character design" accusation. I don't need to explain this one, it speaks for itself why it's dumb. Unless it was blatantly ripped off, blowing hot air is just gonna make everyone hate you. This counts with the species thing too; it's not worth it throwing a fit if someone makes a personal character based on your species, maybe unless that person is claiming ownership and designing said species, but even then, don't go overboard.

-Many Adopt creators not understanding or thinking they still have a say in how that design they sold is used. Especially when it comes to letting the buyer sell how they want. Seriously, it ain't yours anymore. That's not how it works in the professional world, and it's entirely disrespectful to the buyer. If you don't like what someone's doing to something they bought, then don't sell to begin with. If you try to take back the design, then you're stepping into illegal territory.

-Closed Species MYOs. Those feel like straight up ripoffs to pay for designing something myself. I have a CS, and I don't do MYOs for sales cause I think it's a scam. Just open up for Customs.

-Also with the CS, restrictive rules where the buyer can't even do redesigns. Like, they own the design, you don't have a say if they redesign. If you don't want that, then just have a Cannon version and they can have a version of their own. Or lessen the paywall so people have a better chance to get what they want.

I don't see pwyw commissions as lazy the same way the above user does, but I agree that they're a big pet peeve of mine. I never know how much is fair to offer in those cases, or how much the artist values their own work, so I tend to avoid them when commissioning people. I understand why people sell their art this way, but as a buyer I always feel uncomfortable pricing another users work. I'd much rather commission someone with set prices or at least a vauge range!!

Other points I agree with here are restrictive TOS being invalid. There are some things a designer has the right to control, such as insuring proper credit and fair use of the design, but there aren't many cases when revoking a design is okay. Personally I only think this can only apply when a scam is involved or for whatever reason the design wasn't paid for. Not getting along with someone or having them break a minor rule doesn't justify a callout or attempt to revoke a design. You'd be surprised how many "callouts" I see warning people about the most petty things.

And for my personal biggest pet peeve: I hate drawing on large canvases, but using small canvases destroys my art quality on most platforms. Every post I make to Twitter ends up being like three pixels and I'm suffering. I should just suck it up and make my canvases bigger, but it's so hard for me to adapt to that ughhzggd

I know this one can't be helped, and I try to not let it bug me... But yunno how when you get known for one type of art or fanart everything else you draw gets ignored? Like you can post something you spent days on or you're really proud of and it gets 4 likes max, meanwhile half-assed art of what you're known for gets all the likes and comments?

sorry... i'm grumpy and old

- general gatekeeping amongst artists who put down certain techniques or styles.
- when people say you're "naturally talented", usually in the form of a compliment but I have had people say it with bitterness as well. I do believe in natural inclination or talent but I am not one of those people, I've been practicing for years and I still struggle every day.
-the fact that fanart usually gets so much more clout and attention than original art. I actually like drawing fanart but it's kind of sad.
- on a similar note, the pics I'm most proud or fond of are usually the least popular. I don't know what that's about.
-that resolution required to print stuff or put on t-shirts needs to be so high
-stuff drawn with the pixel tool doesn't resize as easily and is harder to apply to different stuff (ex. posting to different platforms). I know there are ways to do it but I'm lazy
-instagram in general. I know there are a lot of people on there but I run into issues with it and find it kind of clunky
- artists that reference or use different resources but don't credit. it's a morality thing but also it's just useful for me to see what they are referencing or using so I want to see what they used.
- when you are tasked to draw something with no refs or with a pic that is 100x100 or something lol
- this is super petty and not that serious, but some art challenges. I get sick of seeing the same thing done over and over again with nothing new added. like, I hate that sailor moon redraw trend because it made me tired of seeing sailor moon which a crime against god.

-i really don't like dollmakers, i'm sorry, i can't stand it when i see an OC made using a dollmaker app/website...

It bugs me a lot that some artists will delete their entire galleries and internet presence and just disappear into the ether.  Everyone has the right to, and there are many different reasons that one might want a clean slate, but it's sad to see.  Every contribution you make to our culture is a gift for the future.  Even your ugliest scribbles help clarify the footprint we all, as humans in this time period, are leaving behind.  Also sometimes I forget to save the original images of designs I adopted and then the creator disappears, lol.
