Things You Liked Before They Were Cool

Exactly what the title said. What popular and mainstream things were you (and still are) a fan of before they hit the mainstream and exploded into popularity?

I'm admittedly curious about what things you guys are the OGs of.

vinnys

it’s not super popular but kid icarus 💪 more specifically uprising but yeah there’s some more content circulating abt it now and it’s nice to see it getting recognition but also just a bit scary

i used to stan shinee and exo, i was like seven and i was rlly sad when shinee became 4 ;w;

It was always popular in some way, but more in it's own sub-community until everyone and their grandma knows it now:

Vocaloids, Hatsune Miku etc.

I got into it pretty early on, pre-exposure to the internet and stuff LOL, binging those edgy songs everyone who knew about them would listen to back in the day, make AMV's of and stuff! So seeing them, esp. Miku, boom so much further into popularity over the years that almost anyone you mention her to know who she is on some level, is crazy!!

(Another something more obscure that's suddenly getting a resurgence is Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and I started getting back into it pre-resurgence so HEHEHEH   )

Not to be an old fart, but I liked MLP back when they actually looked like horses. My mom was the original fan really, but I got all her gen 1 ponies when I was a kid. smh kids these days don’t even know how hardcore it was, one of the old movies had literal centaur satan as the villain.

Needless to say I have not kept up with the franchise.

vocaloid for me as well. i was a fan back when the youtube translators that were most relied upon were channels like lordxwillie, Kanannon, motokokusanagi2009, and the crypton vocaloids were hardly known of in the west. still kinda boggles my mind how much it blew up since then, tbh

i guess i could say undertale as well since i bought and played it just a couple months after it came out and before the fandom really exploded.

castlevania, too, WAY before the netflix show

^ Yessss! I think I got RiverClan a lot? I don't remember. But I got Tangletalon as a Warriors name and that's what influenced two of my oc's names! I miss the old website and the forums T_T

Fnaf..............

I was there when the ogs were there, watching fnaf comic dubs late at night to early in the morning when it gained its popularity, watching YouTubers and people come out with countless fnaf fangames, I even wanted to make my own back in the day. I even remember the good ol' "Mangle gender debate"...

Oh I poke fun about this all the time to my friends, but I was listening to Mother Mother wayyy before anyone else. Like barely 3,000 views on youtube, the animation/animatic side of YouTube hadn't even found it yet, old.

I will clarify I'm an extremely casual fan, like I don't know any of the members names and probably have most my plays logged during middle School which is forever ago. But I'm extremely happy that TikTok recently gave them the boom in popularity recently. They make good music and what was holding them back was people gatekeeping the hell out of them which is so dumb bc musicians can't survive without support.

Also holy crap replying to something a bit above me but I have like a core memory of finding out about Hatsune Miku from a scholastic news mini magazine. Like the kind you get in school. It was right when she came out too so I must've been 7 or 8 oh my God. I wanna go digging for the article now.

I’ve always liked that popular song always used in emotional and sad edits and nostalgia posts called “PayPhone”

Mostly because it reminds me of one of the childhood videos I used to watch: https://youtu.be/xVbOiEWhUsc

The nostalgia :’) I miss 2013
