Things you learned at an embarrassingly late age

Posted 7 years, 3 days ago (Edited 7 years, 2 hours ago) by MiscBoardMod

I saw this thread on reddit the other day and it was an overall pretty funny thread just because of some of the things people haven't learned until much later and some people who have had the same thing happen!

Now to be clear, do NOT  make fun of ANYONE in this thread!! It's only to share funny little stories and giggles etc, but please don't be rude to others about it! Some things may be obvious to you, while it's not the same for everyone!

As always, if there is any sensitive content that you feel may need to be blacked out, please do so!

There's not much more to add to this, so go wild!

I didn't learn facebook's existance and like 90% social media's existance until my first year of high school. And I didn't learn was snapchat was until last year. ;7;

I learned this a few years ago but there's actually rampant aphobia both in and out of the LGBT community. When I came out as aro/ace I wasn't really discriminated against (though I had been threatened with corrective rape), and I think I can chalk that up to living in Canada, and going to a school where bigotry and homophobia was shunned a LOT in the general culture there. But in recent years I've experienced and heard about lots of aphobia, mostly online, especially with that ace exclusionist craze on tumblr at the moment...

When I was younger, I didnt really care too much about ace representation in media. Now I do and that's why my main OC and lead protagonist in my story is aro/ace.

I did not figure out that the phrase was "bearer of bad news" until I was 13? I always thought it was "bear of bad news" which i thought was somehow like "the bad news bears."

Didn't know how to ride a bike until I was ... 16? 17?

Even then it was more just having someone tell me "just try to balance" thats it

Also didn't know how to commute via bus until I was in university because I was usually with someone else who did know and that was it...

It probably doesn't count cuz I haven't learned yet but I don't know how to light up matches...... I tried once when I was a kid and burned my hand and since then I've never succeeded...

I only learned how to whistle when I was 17. Now I never stop.

How to drive lol. I learned how to do that 9 years later than most everyone here. (At age 24. People here are usually learning at 15) And people will ask me "why did you wait so long?" Cause that shit gave me anxiety and still does. I only do it because I have to. If I had a choice I'd be content with never driving again.

I still don't know how to 'properly' tie my shoes. It's always make two loops and tie them that way.

I couldn't cook an over easy egg until I was 22.

I didn't know how to do my taxes until my mom seriously screwed them up for me when I was 23. So I went and learned and now she doesn't touch them. XD

I, like many others in this thread, had no idea about the urethra / vagina thing until I was like... 19? Or so? Always thought they were the same.

Idk. List goes on. |D

@Atlaswakes I actually plan on never learning to drive lol. I live in a city with lots of bike lanes and decent public transit, and I have high hopes for self-driving cars being publicly available by the time I can afford one.

i learned a few months ago what a dust ruffle was. and that brussel sprouts are baby cabbages. why even call them something different then

Ughm, as for me. First thing I remember is that I learnt only recently that Kiev is not in Russia? Not a big deal except it being in Russia had been the whole premise of a story I wanted to write.

Only when I was 18-19 did I learn that you can, in fact, shower and wash yourself when you are ill. Like it won't make you "catch further cold" or get more sick. I was shocked when I read that it's not a "thing" in the rest of the world which makes the memory of that forthnight I spent with chicken pox back in basic school all the more pathetic (Thanks mom! XD ).

And as for a bit more embarassing one, ughm. I only learnt how to use an ATM and make online purchases when I was about to go to college? Friend had to walk me through it because I was certain that I was doing to do something wrong and get my card eaten by the machine.

@Ikaruyo Is there a more "proper" way of tying your shoelaces than doing the loops then?
