commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

People lying about so called “emergencies.” I get it, sometimes times do get tough and you need extra money but the term has been so misused I cannot tell what is and isn’t an emergency. Is your emergency related to your dog dying of cancer or not being able to afford your child’s medication, or is it related to you wanting to buy the next $500 adoptable on the market or going to AJR’a 2022 concert? Be honest with your customers, you don’t need to create a sob story to get that money flowing. And even if you know nobody would commission you elsewise, find other ways to make quick money. The term emergency should not be used lightly.

^ on the topic of emergency commissions.

I honestly hate them. Simply because I've only had bad experience with it. And I really mean every single time. Last time (a couple months a go) I bought an emergency commission for not a small amount of money and I still haven't gotten the art (I poke the artist here and there). Another time I got a very low effort and quality artwork that looked nothing like the Persons other art. Another time I just got ghosted. So now usually when I see emergency commissions in any title I stay away. Not saying every artists does this or has no actual emergency. There are definitely serious cases and people who need the money and will also deliver good work. But emergency commissions usually draw me away and I'm just afraid. Even when it comes to mutuals, because there I had similar situations as well. I'm more likely to commission someone when they have a regular art shop and stuff. Whenever I decided to commission people in need I had problems ;-; and whenever I bougt from people who "just have commissions open, come here if you want" I had zero problems so far. Not once as far as I can remember. I understand that life happens and especially if you cannot draw atm because of the emergency I understand that but I really don't want to struggle like that and not getting what I pay for. Even after months, or the artists ghosts you. Especially when the artists says they will Finish it in a week or two.  Most of the time these just feel like a scam because of my experiences with it.

And just wanted to add that yes, nobody forces you to buy emergency commissions but when I did I actually was interested in buying from this artist and at the same time helping them with their situation. I don't go around buying art I don't actually want. Lol

^ yes

These people just take more and more commissions without finishing any older ones or just at a VERY low speed. And I always see them posting more and more commission ads and slots get taken and I'm like "jup definitely not going to see my commission this year (or next year)". I understand needing the funds but this just isn't it...

I also don't want to let the 6 months expire (PayPal buyer protection) but at the same time don't want to take away the money from an artist AND someone who's in need at the same time. But I don't want to get scammed like that. If 6 months have passed I cannot do anything anymore and I'm worried because of it. I really wouldn't mind if the amount I paid was low but this wasn't the case.

Sorry for posting again but-

When clients ask you how I think it looks... after I ask them if they want changes done.. they don't tell me if I can continue,  if something needs a fix, they just ask if I like it. Eh? If I wouldn't like it I wouldn't send you the wip and ask for your approval.  Pls. What do you except.  Yes of course I think it looks okay to continue.  I'm asking YOU. it's your commission.

'ask / dm for commission prices'

i'd rather see a public price list than approach someone to inquire, find out they're out of my price range, and have wasted time / hopes for both of us

When artists do not understand that it's only their and no one else's responsibility how they treat customers and manage the communication. If you are a jerk, then you can have da Vinci art but I won't come back, the end.

It's your business, why are you sabotaging yourself by being short and snappy with your customers? Not to mention it's pretty ableist to snap at autistic people or people with reading disabilities or like anyone for that matter for missing something, asking a question, or having troubles comprehending things. Plus, not everyone is American, or English native speaker, have some common decency and reflect on the situation before blaming your customers for not reading your info. The language barrier can be overcome, but your ruined public image not so much.

Sometimes this gives me the Kitchen Nightmares vibe with the entitled cooks.

Don't blame the fish (customer with reading comprehension difficulties) for not being able to climb a tree (commission you), help it up there.

(Ofc, if you don't care then I guess do whatever you want, but I am pretty sure people won't be coming back...)

inaccessible commission sheets. either i cant find/have to chase down half the information across multiple sites, or its an image of text my screen reader thus cant read, or its so covered in glittery ribbons and everything is 3 close shades of pink that its not even worth the time to decode all the "aesthetic", or its one of those carrd things that has 2-4 different sections or links i need to navigate just to get a vague idea of pricing...

I try to avoid PWYW commissions whenever I can because they’re kind of an admission that the artist doesn’t know their worth/doesn’t want to put work into figuring it out and then are usually the type to complain that what you offered isn’t the range of what they wanted or expected… like at that point you know how much you want to be paid, just tell me?? I just want art I don’t want to play mind games😭
