commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

while i can understand why it happens, it always irks me when people ask about my commission status when i'm closed and then they suddenly lose interest when they're open.

plutou

i havent gotten commissions in a long time but back when i used to and the artist would just. get the design wrong. or miss a key detail like.. did u even look at my character's ref

IK its totally in my right to correct them but cmon. im shy and it just makes me feel like im being nitpicky

Me: posts commission ad

Random person 1 minute later: are your commissions open? How much is an icon?

I wanna die (and I don't even offer icons)

General peeves?

- Lack of communication. Give me updates. Let me know if something happened. I don't want to poke for updates after God knows when only to then be met by 'oh I was busy for a few weeks'. Please let me know. Doesn't have to be immediate, but don't keep me waiting for weeks.
- Queues that aren't updated. You might as well have not had a queue list at all at this point and I'd probably feel better about it.
- "DM me for the price". Bonus points if there's stuff about it being affordable. I live in a country with a shit economy and I can only afford so much. Please, let's not waste each other's time. At least have a price range I can look at for consideration.

Also, kinda controversial, but I do not feel comfortable paying upfront when prices hit the $100+ mark, mostly since I've had enough acquaintances with horror stories where they pay hundreds only to then get promptly ghosted. I'd probably be willing to settle for a portion of the price, but I'd only be willing to pay for everything once it's all finalised.

As a client who posts ad...

PLEASE read what I've specified!

If I say comment below with your info, I mean comment NOT message!

If I say that I'm looking for artist who can draw males, don't message me saying 'can't draw males but here's my information'.

Do not message me asking me what I want drawn and when I want it drawn and what my budget is...without 1) rereading the fact I stated to comment below the ad! And 2) not even giving me your commission info. Oh and having the nerve to get mad at ME for declining because you couldn't be bothered to read my ad throughly.

This happened to me on Twitter and omfg it was maddening.

Oh and the "you there??" message really pissed me off. ><

Do you ever feel like self explanatory things apparently aren't self explanatory? I swear my TOS keeps getting longer every month.

I guess this isn’t a huge deal but when you commission an artist and they send you a paypal link but don’t also include the exact price with it. Maybe it’s just my anxiety but I hate having to ping pong around messages or posts/tweets/whatever to confirm it in my mind.

Hopefully this makes sense? An example would be someone advertises icons for $20 on their twitter and says to DM in the same tweet. You DM with details and they say ‘Great, payment to xxxxxx @ xxxxx.com’. . Please, just tell me it then and there!

scorpiospires

I really wish more people would message you with a little explanation when your commission is going to take longer than expected

It doesn't need to be a big huge message going into all the details of your personal life, just a little "hey sorry it's gonna be a little longer than i said, something came up" would be really nice to hear!! I hate having to ask people I've commissioned because it feels like I'm rushing them fsggsfd

kittengeist

When an artist says they'll start on an commission ASAP but then totally ghosts you for 1 week+ despite them actively posting personal and gift art online. Then they give every excuse under the sun as to why it's not done yet.

Like my god if you didn't want to start it then say so instead of leaving me in the dark. It ended up being a 6-7 month ordeal.

Phosphini

I really don't like it when the 'won't draw' includes something super vague like 'anything gross'. Are they talking about NSFW? Gore? Kissing? Snakes?

If there's something like that I usually just don't commission them, even if I don't think there's anything anyone could object to about the commission, just to be safe.

Also it just feels extremely judgemental. If someone likes gore but wasn't planning to commission it from you, you've just insulted them and now they don't want to buy a non-gore commission from you.

Edit: also I'd love if more people started putting a time estimate in their commission info
