commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

Big one as an artist: unclear refs. Especially ones where there's a complicated hairstyle...and the art ordered is a backveiw but the ref is only a front veiw.

“Complexity fees” added on simply because the OC I want to get commissioned is black

the rest of his design is a suit and a coat it’s not complex. I finish drawing his clothes in 30 minutes. It’s transparent and it makes me afraid to commission art of him… along with other reasons

Omg yes! I'm seeing that more and more on every artists commission sheet! It's honestly more than a little absurd, especially when they don't provide any sort of clear reference as to what they consider complex.

I have a few.

When you make a post looking for commissions and somebody responds saying they have some open but provide no examples or prices.

Artists, who's work you have payed for, being banned while doing your commission. I know there was a reason for it but it's still slightly annoying.

White-washing my ocs. It's one of my biggest commissioning fears.

Artists telling you to pay first then giving you no updates for months. I've been trying to get something commissioned since August and I have no responses rn.

I HOPE that nobody will use the Ukraine crisis as a way to get rich quick and scam people. I don’t want to think people would be that heartless but people do/did the same to BLM/LGBTQ/Animal rescue/Environment/Other War-Zone Countries/etc so it wouldn’t be too surprising to see people leech on another social issue for the sake of getting people to commission them.

when people have stuff like 'weird or gross kinks' in their no section. please specify it ;w; i don't want to ask people for nsfw if they write things like that. partly because it feels like they'd make fun of me if i request the wrong things and partly because i don't want to ask them for stuff that might make them uncomfortable.

like just specify what you won't draw. it's not that hard. and maybe don't call kinks gross lol, if you don't like them than thats obviously fine but i'm generally not for calling other peoples preferences gross. no matter if they're sexual or not, some people do that with gore or specific types of ocs too and that's equally as bad lol.

in general, please be concrete with what you don't want to draw. it doesn't matter if you don't think of everything in the beginning, if someone requests something you don't feel comfortable with you can still politely decline and add that to your no's ;w;

When I'm doing a commission / art trade for a character and the artist just,,, takes so, so long,, I understand you can be busy, I totally get it, but it's been over two weeks and I literally just asked you to draw, like, a halfbody or a bust? And I haven't heard a single mention of working on other comms or anything? But, like, I agree with the above stuff, I don't care if you're gonna take a while as long as you're clear and communicating and at least give me an idea of when to expect it, but if I have to go and message you for updates only for it to be delayed further, it's getting a bit ridiculous. Also, I'm still nervous to message for updates, even if I only do it maybe once a week or something

Also, a self-peeve, but I wanna open commissions. Except I know I'm gonna have to charge below minimum wage because I'm slow as hell, and I know nobody's gonna pay like 500-600+ points for a headshot that not even really high quality :/ I mean, it's not the worst, I don't really mind I guess, but I feel bad about it because I always see people saying 'Oh, don't undercharge for your art !! You should charge at least minimum wage' or whatever, but that's not gonna work if nobody buys it? But I also don't wanna contribute to the whole undercharging artists thing, so maybe I'm just not ready until I can get much faster?

When people don’t specify what they are looking for when giving away their characters. If that char someone is interested in is for USD offers only and you don’t specify that don’t get angry when they offer art, customs, or designs (and vise versa)

LemonBear

I find it very annoying when someone orders a custom design from an artist and uploads it to Toyhouse and then labels themself as the creator. Like I get you had the idea of the character in your head. But the artist did all the heavy lifting and it would be nice if ya at least gave the artist designer credits :/ people who do this annoy me to no end
