Feedback thread for the Front/Browse/Search page updates — the corresponding announcement and changelist is here!

🎯 Goals —

  • Reduce congestion in the character trade listings and search pages that was previously caused by a bunch of ads/non-characters being submitted to the site
  • Improve visibility on the top page for characters that are currently being pushed off by non-characters
  • Make it easier to find what you’re looking for when searching for characters/codes/resources/services/etc

📋 Seeking feedback for —

  • I wasn’t sure whether people would prefer having each character type separated out into a separate listing rather than everything just being types of character?
    • I opted to just add an optional filter since this seems more flexible in terms of search and customization (people seem to just be creating everything as a “Character” profile currently anyway, and a lot of the features are going to be the same), but let me know if this doesn’t feel good, or if anyone has suggestions regarding how to better structure the listings.
    • My original idea for the front page was to allow people to add an arbitrary number of blocks (eg. if you want to add a Popular Characters, Popular HTML/CSS, Popular Resources blocks separately), but the UI for the control panel started getting very long and confusing so I just scrapped the idea. I’ll probably be fiddling with this to see if there’s a way to do this that isn’t overwhelming for the average user.
  • Character categories:
    • These are currently “Character”, “HTML/CSS”, “Resource”, “Service/Ad” based on what we most commonly receive reports for, but this can be expanded or updated if we feel that this is missing anything or is too broad.
  • General UI/UX feedback:
    • If there’s anything confusing or if you have suggestions for how to improve any areas of the front/browse/search pages.
  • Extra features:
    • Are you someone who regularly uses the trade listings or front pages and feel like there are changes or extra features that could be added to make life easier for you?? Have ideas for how to help make the listings less frustrating and more accessible?? Let me know!!
  • Performance issues:
    • Is the site super laggy for you now??? If not site-wide, please do point out the specific pages that you’re having issues with.
  • Anything else related!! If you have any feedback for an unrelated feature, it may be better to submit a HelpDesk ticket rather than replying to this specific thread.

If you’re uncomfortable leaving feedback in public, please don’t hesitate to open a ticket via the HelpDesk.

Thanks as always!

Thanks so much for the update~ Seems like this will be much more useful and convenient for hopefully everyone. :3

I noticed when editing a character in the advanced options to change the character type that the boxes are a little hard to read. I’m viewing it on Firefox on an iPad, with the first image in desktop view and the second is rotated vertically.

Edit: Looks good now, thanks for fixing it~

Anyone have a solution to the tags not working for search? Do u gotta enable a setting or is it a bug? I like the new update. I think it adds to the community especially with profile decor, and things that impact character development but are not direct ocs themselves. I hope this site still retains the main aspect of being a character storage site and not a social media/art platform

maybe reword games/contests to games/raffles? seeing as how contests are never listed in that category

also think the current method of hiding trade listings from the front page is good enough, and hiding specific trade listings would be redundant as it's already possible to do so in search. really appreciate the new changes and how quickly they are implemented

Love this! My only issue is how the 5 catergories can be all clicked on so people could continue to list their bases/art examples/resources as characters. I feel like some things should be locked if someone is to select resources so they don’t have a chance to spam actual characters.

Technically that's (usually) on the people intentionally mis-categorizing their characters for attention, rather than an issue with the categorization system itself.
I've had to report two characters that were listed as resources already, but the tickets went through VERY quick and the characters were fixed. The chances of them doing it again should go down too.
Reports do a lot when it comes to people abusing the system! Don't be afraid to use them <3

Currently you can't un-categorize a character, which was made so people don't farm favs and then change the profile to a character, which is VERY nice as I've seen someone do it before.
It's also a decent "punishment" in itself for people who think they can get quick views and then change back, they get stuck like that and need to send in a ticket.

I suggest an extra category that works as a "misc" maybe?

Cause sometimes i use character profiles for lore, world information, species information, or testing codes! and im sure other people have different uses for the character profiles too. Instead of making categories for everything, it would be much simpler for there to be a misc category.

I would also like there to be an option to revert a profile back to a character in case of misclicks (or at least extra confirmation)

I'd also love another category for worldbuilding/lore- But maybe name the category "Information" or just "Info"? That way it can also encompass things like TOS, RP comfort memes, wishlists, and maybe even art galleries

As for trade listings, having a "For Trade (Character)" and "For Trade (Art)" options would be great 🙏 This one's more wishful thinking, but I'd also like "Human" to be separate from "Humanoid". So there'll be Human, Humanoid, Furry/Anthro, and Feral checkboxes.

Thaaat's all I got- Thank you for all you do! This update is lovely ^^

It'd be cool if there was a separate category for "adopt", that way there's a distinction that you can filter through, and it can be changed back to a normal character profile after!

I think we badly need a "recent new images" section on the front page. From what I can tell, a character is only listed on the front page on the date they are first created, and adding more images of them at later date does not bump them up there, or anywhere else. It would help people find characters if every time we uploaded a new image of a OC, it would appear in a "new images" section. This is like how the vast majority of other art websites do it; having a section for new art uploads.

Pinky

i was reading over the thread, and "f2e" characters are "fav to enter" correct? shouldn't that/character raffles in general go under "ads" since they arent free - they are basically are there for fav farming (and most people who do them require you sub them so they're tools to get subs on and favs on other characters). if they go under ads, you can just turn off ads to not see them. if the design gets a new owner, they can delete the ad and re-upload them as a character. i think putting them under ads is better then creating more subcategories

also is there a reason people don't use literatures or worlds for their lore and worldbuilding? it seems like a these would make more sense then a character page. worlds have the ability to make "misc" blank pages and you can use CSS on them without premium, so it'd be easy to set up one up contain various lore/location pages

^ regarding what @Pinky said about worlds/literatures for worldbuilding, i use world pages to store all (most) of my worldbuilding information and it's definitely my preferred method! the only downsides imo (likely part of the reason they aren't as popular as character profiles) are the lack of the ability to upload images to a gallery and the lack of world publicity, but i think these could both easily be solved. there was a suggestion thread a while ago that brought up being able to add literatures and image galleries to worlds/world pages. i made some mockups for it:

worldmockup2.pngworldmockup3.pngworldmockup1.png

it might also be a good idea to give literatures their own galleries as well, for those who don't want to create a whole world for a single species/etc. (also just for the convenience of being able to tie related images and literatures together in the first place). the lack of world publicity could also be solved with a "browse worlds" page like we have for characters and literatures, which is something i'd really love to see anyway!

i'm definitely not opposed to adding a "worldbuilding" character category (i still might prefer it over world pages for things like objects), but it might be better to build on the feature we already have for this instead/additionally. i would really love to see the worlds feature get some more love.
