💡 Why does your OC exist (in meta)?

Hi! A lot of us have OCs with fleshed-out backstories and complex personalities... but what was the first thing, the first trait you've come up to for them? What made you create this character? The answer can be as serious ("I wanted to create a character to share with my experiences with <event>") or silly ("I really like pasta so I've made a character who likes pasta") as you want!

Just have fun and please keep things civil ♥

The Unnamed Hunter Barbilou

Most of my characters exist either because of dumb inside jokes, a song, a personal experience or something I began to specially like at the time-

But The Hunter was originally made because I had a serious idea for a while. I wanted to write a story in second person for a long time--- better said, a whole group of stories based on that premise. I have rarely seen books with that narrative after all, and I've always found it a cool concept to play around with!

That's why she has "no name", and is hardly ever referred to as how she's supposed to be named. Even that doesn't give much clue of her character (Deercub), nor she remembers a lot of her past (as she's very vague about it). She just focuses on her present and future; what the reader could find easier to connect with.

That's also why her homeworld is called "Readom"; and the language and protagonists of it, "Reader(s)".

I don't know if I'll still write her stories in second person though, as I added way more depth in her world than I originally planned, and narrating in character could limit me on showing all of that <:^0 But it still gets my curiosity-

 Rowen Evans 007

Welll, a few days ago I wanted to make a bad boy (Japanese) delinquent dude with a pompadour who had a troubled past, so Riku came to be!

I was kinda lonely and needed a new bad boy boyfriend character, so Riku was a great idea

When I got the idea I was at an outdoor party (actually last friday) and I was at bliss thinking about my boy and his story possibilities  \(//∇//)\

I was inspired by Jouske, Jotaro (from jojos bizarre adventure), Guzma (from Pokemon), Onigawara and Shimazaki (from Mob Psycho 100), metal bat (from one punch man). Basically the cool bad boy characters with a very delinquent aesthetic from each series

 TIC jukeboxes

TIC was created because I wanted all of my OCs to have these little people helping control them within their mind (have you ever seen Inside Out? It's kind of like that, except way different). None of them were going to be particularly special, but then I saw the possibilities for one of my main character's little people.

That main character, Zachary Xavier, is an artificially created being, brought to life through the means of science and a freshly dead body. I wanted his little person to be corrupted in some way, and I absolutely didn't expect it to go as far as I did!

TIC's name began as a play on one of Zachary's themes (tic tac toe), but a few days ago I decided that their name was an acronym (major spoilers for my story here!), standing for Total Iridium Continuum (Reflected). This opened up so many storytelling windows for TIC being corrupted, an iridium copy of Zachary himself, etc.

WOW this is a lot. I'm just really proud of how far this character has come since January when I first created them to be a boring background character.

Swiss cheese Swissy

Barey exists because of my name because most people think cheese when they see my name. And persona is basically a representation of your character, right? But Che turned into a sona and a character, simultaneously.

Mournimar Da'Viir Unholyleaf

Well, I joined a d&d campaign on impulse (which was the best life choice i've made in all honesty), and needed to make a character, so originally, I was going to make a drow ranger with the name Mournimar Da'Viir, but I hadn't bought a lot of the stuff on DnD beyond, so I didn't have drow unlocked, so I made him a tiefling. The first thing I came up with backstory wise was that he was born in a cult, things went wrong and lead to him blacking out and killing the cultists in order to escape, and that he carries massive guilt and is cursed to go into blackout rages, which is what lead him to adventure, so he would find a cure. Design wise, i was a little stuck, but also hyperfocusing on TES at the time, so I decided to theme his appearance around the dremora.

XDBAT SonicMania

Most of my OCs kind of exist on the basis alone of "wow I would like an OC with that feature".

Many of them are made with the idea of "hmm I really want a purple and green character" and then I'll come up with a way to make them unique and fit in with whatever universe I want them to. I created the character Mr.SparkShot Head because I was fascinated with the idea of goofy characters with weird heads and an almost humanoid body. XDBAT was created because I wanted a character that was basically the physical manifestation of "lol that's so random". And I have a feeling that he won't be the last character like that....

Napsterbot 01 watergems

at the time, ongoing rp threads/plots were serious and atmosphere was tense, so i made a character that i could keep using for funney joke's

Mikoto knightofpherae

i absolutely HATE This origin story but uh i made mikoto... in roblox. in kingdom life II.....

he was also, originally just a character who was like secretly pulling the strings of every bad happening and also a character that was an asshole because he could be but i changed that ( still kind of exists within his canon, but when he was a teenager up to like 17 he was still kind of like that type of asshole ),,

now he's just laid back and bored a lot

entipikal

Hey here’s a biiiiiig post detailing basically every OC that’s on Toyhouse (and some that aren’t!)’s origins

Amberglass's design was based off of a "paint your own" toy I made when I was really young. It was a cat laying down, I coloured it mainly black with random yellow and orange patches. It's been sat on my shelf for years, and one day I looked up and went... "hey... that's...... a cool design...." and then I jumped onto my laptop and doodled something! The something became Amberglass!

Egg exists because before I got Hollow Knight I still loved the aesthetics, and I had a whole dream based around him and how it would be if he were in the game. As soon as I woke up, I got the idea for his name, "Egg". I drew him, sent him to my friend, and then they said the design was cool and for then the design belonged to them. BUT! Not too long ago, 40-something hours on Hollow Knight, I started doodling Egg again.. and again... and again...... and, they'd never really done anything with him so Egg was mine again! Since then he's been given nice lore and dialogue and art.
All of the Kleurs exist because of Minty, a character I initially doodled when trying to figure out design aspects I like. I doodled her again after seeing the tiny first doodle, then again when I found that doodle. Then I did some world building, then Sangria and Bloom came along, along with everyone else and all the world building…… I love them all, though.
Now for the most complex one… (which I might have already posted but I’m not sure?)
Scott, Toby and two others that aren’t on Toyhouse (Yan and Klei) were originally (in February 2016) based off of game devs. Nothing else to it. They were basically just. Game devs. But ~magical~. And ~vaguely interesting~. Eventually the implications of the idea started to scare me and I redesigned them, overhauling their backstories and characters, removing them from the whole game dev thing, but I didn’t change their names. Now, considering Klei is literally the name of a game company, it’s kept me from actually putting them onto Toyhouse.. And Yan? Yan’s just. He’s not there. Now they’re my oldest OCs with the most developed characters and stories…
The Cherries, though designed only recently, are in the same vein, based off of Team Cherry, the amazing people that made Hollow Knight.
Yami and Daku are just extensions to Yan’s story that happened

Oh, and Athens exists because Coconut was lonely.

Denuka Emiju

I actually originally created him to be my "ideal" antagonist. Basically combining and reworking my favorite bad guy tropes into one character!
It took a lot of fiddling around and balancing between backstory and personality, but I'm so incredibly happy with him both design and background wise

birbutt

i had a very complicated character idea
i still doubt i've explained it right at all

bonus: and then i wanted to give 'em a
spicy hitman/mercenary male sidekick,
cause why not?

Vachir Ancile tinybuggy

I had really gotten into Star Wars the Old Republic and Vachir was the first sith pureblood I made in game. She wasn't called Vachir back then and actually this is like version 5.0 of her :')
