Ask the person above OOC about their character!

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago (Edited 5 months, 17 days ago) by Luke (CHIEF) hedgemaze

There's a thread for asking IC questions to the character above, but I am a sucker for all dem sweet, sweet character development tidbits, so if you're like me and you've ever wondered what inspired someone to make their characters, here is the thread for you.

Post IC (but don't actually write IC) as the character you want the person below you to ask you a question about, or you can let them ask about any of your characters (or a certain group of characters)! Ask any question OOC to the above character's owner, like perhaps what inspired a certain design choice, what gave them the idea for the character in the first place, what aspect of their character they struggled most in writing, or if the character has changed significantly over time. Anything you want, really (it doesn't have to be a character development question: it can be any OOC question about the character, or a group of them). Claim first if you need time to look through their characters or read their profile(s). And after you've been asked a question, edit your post with your answer.

Rules:

  • Please try to ask an interesting question!
  • Nothing too sensitive here, please. If you must post something sensitive, use a spoiler cut or make the text and highlight color the same. There is another thread for NSFW questions.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • BE NICE!

I'll start us off with this guy. Have fun!

Edit: my answer

So Luke and the other two terrorists were inspired by an incident when my friend and I were in high school, and running around the neighborhood like the teenage idiots we were, wearing all the Halloween costume items from my basement that we could manage: among them, a Christmas reindeer antler headband and a child's toy fireman helmet. A guy yelled out of the window of his pickup truck that terrorists like us are what America stands against... which was an insane thing to yell at teenagers in stupid costumes, but it made me think, what if I played that guy straight and he was right?

What is an inspiration for Cinque's personality? Do you relate to her in some major way?

___

I've always wanted an AI character, cuz I'm a sucker for robots and, well, AIs in general, but I didn't have one of my own! At some point the pun 'exe.sorcist' popped out of my brain without me meaning to, and I was like lmao, that's clever! So with both things in mind I realized hey I could make an oc with that name!

Deciding it was an anti virus was fairly easy; it could be an 'exorcist' of 'demons' and it fit right into the idea of what an antivirus does, quarantining data that's infected by malware. The development of their 'personality' and true duty came after that. While in universe they're an antivirus that became an AI, they were intended to be an AI in my heart from the beginning.

I've always been involved with technology thanks to my family (and being glued to the internet since forever) so I just put most of what I knew about software in them. Neural networks in general serve as an inspiration for their behavior... And I guess even though I wasn't thinking of them at the moment, Baymax from BH6 is probably an indirect inspiration as well. exe.sorcist isn't as adorable, but they're as helpful!

Haruka spacecadet

how did you come up with the idea for exe.sorcist? like... what inspired you to make them? i've never ever seen an antivirus character, especially one with such a thought out purpose. did you watch a movie/read something that made you want to make them?

aaaa well, she's my idolsona so she's a reflection of me! shiba inus are my absolute fav animal (altho i have a fondness for other animals like tigers/foxes/rabbits/cats, shiba inus are #1) so that's why honestly ;w; as for her backstory, i have no idea how i literally just wanted to have a more believable reason as to why she was living in modern day, regular japan and had animal ears when everyone else didn't. sdgj her story isnt believable at all, but like... idk it just kinda spilled out

Soliel jetsetspy

Why did you choose to make Haruka a shiba inu, and how did you come up with her backstory?

I didn't come up with the idea to make him a tv host, it was a part of his adopt description and I just kinda ran with it. As for his personality, the idea that he's nice onstage but mean offstage was also part of the description, but I fleshed it out by adding his experiences on earth, and alcoholism, which were decisions I made to help him fit in with some of my other ocs, and provide a quick insight into why he is the way he is (aka bullshitted out some character development to add to my dta entry.)

Why does Myrrdin likes to proclaim she's the son of Satan instead of his daughter? It's bolded so I'm curious haha... Also, how it is related to her being a human/monster hybrid? Do these kind of hybrids face discrimination or something similar in her society?

Thanks for the questions!

Well, as stated in the folded description, this story was just a private joke thing with close friends, so I've just ~went with the flow~ with the concepts and characters to add. I'm not religious at all, but I'm on the Autism Spectrum, and history, theology and stuff are some of my special interests, it was just natural and fun for me to do a story about it, I couldn't write anything else anyways lmaooo - All my other stories feature similar themes at different degrees too, so that's not really specific to that one I guess hehe! owo

Glad you asked about Uriel's design specifically because honestly he was a challenge haha, since I had so much themes/symbols to put into it, but I had to keep a harmonious and rather simple (since I have to draw him over and over in the comic)... I wanted his design to be red/orange/yellow because of his common association with fire and the Sun, and at the same time, I had to put the asexual flag somewhere due to the whole "Ambassadors of Sexualities" thing... :"D So I finally put the flag on something kinda inspired by the tallit (the jewish prayer shawl) (who do people keep drawing it too thin lmao), and I added some other asexual symbols, such as the black ring on his right middle finger :D His hair and eyes are red because of the whole "he has to be red" thing, and I added freckles because they looked cute lmao... And finally, the plant/flower pattern of his clothes represent his role as a gardener in the comic c:

For designing characters with existing backgrounds in mythology, I always recommend to do a lot of research before hand! The most important thing, I guess, is to look at traditional depictions of said character and to take care of symbolism (including the symbolism of colours!) ~ When I have enough information, I tend to go with the flow with what I know, but even a Wikipedia page and a "common attributes" list is always useful ♥ I guess you can take inspiration from modern reinterpretations of said characters as well, but for myself, most of the time, I don't really like them as I have very strong opinions and I'll find a way to critique a modern visual depiction lmaooo (not saying that my OCs are free of criticism but at least I like them and I guess that the most important thing :") ).

(Wow that's long, I hope that explains things lmao!! c:)

IK a lot of your ocs have the same names as angels found in Christian religious contexts!  And there are heavy historical influences in your work- what made you decide you were going to make stories based around those concepts- and specifically this story?  As for a specific character, Uriel's design is really interesting- how did you create it?  Considering the name is based on a Christian archangel, do you have a certain method for designing characters with existing backgrounds in mythology, or do you just go with your own flow? :>

It was actually kinda recent!  My oc, Frank, used to be a conman but I wanted to expand on that.  When I made Rory, he struck me as a hitman type, and it went from there.  That was when I really decided that's the path I wanted to take their storyline- I ended up remaking the family to fit that sort of story.  It has that aesthetic that I can get behind.... Like film noir.  It also let me create some fun ocs for the fun of a mob storyline!  So yay!

Lilith Garbagegremlins

When did you decide you wanted a mob universe of characters? I know they can be fun, but where did you first really find that you liked them.  Ie godfather or something

Just look through mine tbh  I couldn't decide who I wanted to do oops

Victoria gummy

I noticed that a lot of the characters you own are adopted, but are veryyyy thought out and put together. When acquiring a new character, how do you figure out what to do forthem?

most of my ocs are connected to the same universe, so it does not necessarily have to be about victoria lol

I did NOT originally write my question like that i literally have no idea what happened omg

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Well, design wise, I wanted her to have an elegant and also fantasy character, and I went with a unicorn-like design because I felt like thats an easy creature that would come to mind. the cowlick And purple and black.... because it was pretty I guess. and it worked. The scars on her body come from the fact when I originally designed Victoria to be a "Bad guy" per se, she was suppost to be undead. The meaning for the scars still have a use in the story line.

Victoria is probably one of the most complex character designs I have in my opinion, especially in her first drafts. Over time I simplified it to be more comfortable and practical to her, too.  Although I dont use her for her original purpose when I made her back when I was like 15 or so, shes become way more complex and intresting than just "ohhhh edgy character uwu" and her personal character development that I made for her over those few years as I began (and still am!) out the missing bits and pieces of this heck of a plot line, I began falling more and more for Victoria, and not, despite her not being the Protag or Antag, shes still my more beloved oc.

I can't help but notice that these two are some of the younger (but developed) characters I've seen on TH! Is it easy for you to write baby/child characters or do you have to do research before hand? Do you work with children in real life or plan to, or do you just like them? :0

I also read that you were inspired by Ponyo when writing them (and you're right, that's a very great and adorable film ;v; ♥); did other Studio Ghibli films inspire you when creating these characters, and your child OCs in general? If yes, which ones and how?

Haha, I didn't think you would be curious about THAT xD Tbh the main reason why I put it here is because I thought it was a rather "strong" (?) statement which could embody the whole "wtf is this it makes no sense" part of the comic? Because yeah in this universe "angels exist physically and there's no way no one could see them" and everyone is chill with it, but atheists remain atheists because if they didn't I couldn't make jokes about it they just see them as delusional cosplayers haha

But yeah basically my answer is just "it sounded cool" lmao

Alice Somnificus reinapepiada

I can understand many of the jokes and references you put in your characters, but one thing I'm rather curious about is where did the idea that atheists specifically could see angels? I see that everyone else can as well, but I'm assuming you mention atheists first for a reason? Is it because of the fact that angels exist physically and there's no way no one could see them, or that their presence is so strong even people who don't believe in any religion can see them, or some other reason?

___

OH it's a good question actually! At first, Alice was supposed to be based on me when I was a kid, but in the group we had, I started a trend of naming them with drug names, and Alice originally was LSD, thus named Acid. However we quickly dropped the drug theme since it was a little tasteless, and I hurried to give him a name that wasn't friggin Acid

Soooo I figured, if he was based on me when I was a kid, he could have a named based on my second name (or surname. but you know being latin american we have two names etc) which is Alí. I'm already named Alicia by my family as a joke or when I'm in trouble so it seemed natural, and it didn't sound that different from Acid? So that's why he ended up as Alice! I know it seems like it was from Alice in Wonderland, but it was not the case haha

His last name was just google translating drug in latin. It's literally drug in latin, man.

Mochagatari

I'm sorry if this is a boring question but I'm truly curious: how did you come up with Alice's name? Does it mean anything?

---

Not really! She doesn’t really handle it in any particular "adult" or "childish" way as she does just handle it HER way. If you mean in regards to be able to investigate in itself, she does have trouble getting into certain places (the only one she has no trouble with being a local speakeasy) and even then her arms dealer pals have given her enough information for her to circumvent certain restrictions. And the Celadonian police don't really care too much about her (or anything, for that matter) so it's not like she'll get in trouble for taking on a cop's job. :V

FellowPigeon

Does November York's young age affect the way she investigates and if so how does she deal with that?

This answer might be a bit rambly but it was really a mixture of reasons, the first simply being that it fit with the already established history of the country being formed by those who didn't fit in with what was accepted in where they were originally from for whatever reason as well as the street gangs and those parts being inspired by similar events that happened in England during its industrial revolution (because of the large about of immigration into the cities in a short time causing large slums to form) The other reason being that it did thematically fit in with the characters stories. One of the key themes for the main characters is the idea of trying to maintain a sense of morality through times when they are forced to make hard decisions which made it seem fitting for that purpose.

hedgemaze

Not really a question for a particular character, but the Vielstinn setting sounds interesting; what made you decide to set a story in a place known as the "land without morals"? It feels thematic and like something your characters struggle with. Is there anything specific that inspired Lorna?

Ask me about anyone from Catband!

Aw, that's a fun question, haha. I'm always happy to talk about those idiots.

Roadie and Haggis met after Izzy decided the band needed an actual bassist if they were going to enter this band competition and persuaded Roadie after hearing about him and seeing him sit in as a bass player for some bands. He had him come to practices to see if they'd fit together, and-- initially Roadie and Haggis really didn't like each other (not to the extent that they couldn't work together, just... Not Friends), because Hag is an abrasive sonofabitch when he wants to be, and Roadie comes across as above such things. But he joins the band, and probably the first time they're alone together is when Haggis starts teaching Roadie the bass parts to the band's songs- until that moment, Hag had been acting as the band's bassist, with his guitar tuned with some of the strings low like Ricky Wilson, because they didn't have a bass. But they kind of have fun talking guitars and challenging each other to 1970s bass riffs, and that's the first time they're sort of friendly.

They keep their relationship a secret for two reasons: the obvious is that they'd have to acknowledge that it IS a relationship (and they're not quite ready to admit that, even to each other), but perhaps the bigger reason is because Haggis is afraid he's betraying his best friend Izzy's trust, and that if the others knew, it would screw up the band-- so he's convinced that everything will be fine as long as they never find out.

Their favorite thing to do together is just play music. Haggis feels more confident and creative when it's just the two of them, so they're often working on songs or just messing around with old covers. c:
