Ask the person above OOC about their character!

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago (Edited 6 months, 8 days ago) by Luke (CHIEF) hedgemaze

There's a thread for asking IC questions to the character above, but I am a sucker for all dem sweet, sweet character development tidbits, so if you're like me and you've ever wondered what inspired someone to make their characters, here is the thread for you.

Post IC (but don't actually write IC) as the character you want the person below you to ask you a question about, or you can let them ask about any of your characters (or a certain group of characters)! Ask any question OOC to the above character's owner, like perhaps what inspired a certain design choice, what gave them the idea for the character in the first place, what aspect of their character they struggled most in writing, or if the character has changed significantly over time. Anything you want, really (it doesn't have to be a character development question: it can be any OOC question about the character, or a group of them). Claim first if you need time to look through their characters or read their profile(s). And after you've been asked a question, edit your post with your answer.

Rules:

  • Please try to ask an interesting question!
  • Nothing too sensitive here, please. If you must post something sensitive, use a spoiler cut or make the text and highlight color the same. There is another thread for NSFW questions.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • BE NICE!

I'll start us off with this guy. Have fun!

Edit: my answer

So Luke and the other two terrorists were inspired by an incident when my friend and I were in high school, and running around the neighborhood like the teenage idiots we were, wearing all the Halloween costume items from my basement that we could manage: among them, a Christmas reindeer antler headband and a child's toy fireman helmet. A guy yelled out of the window of his pickup truck that terrorists like us are what America stands against... which was an insane thing to yell at teenagers in stupid costumes, but it made me think, what if I played that guy straight and he was right?

Lewis O'Connor HowlingCat

I must ask what was your inspiration for Cassandra and how did you go about developing her from the character she is. :0 When I initially saw her design, I didn't think her backstory would actually catch me off (in a good way) seeing how I assume her life would probably be relatively innocent. I am sorry if this question seems generic qwq It's just something I can't help but think about.

What made me decide to change Lewis Gliscor ancestry was the concept behind mega evolution itself. Mega evolution is treated as a transformation whether than a evolution itself. I always found that to be quite strange in my opinion and made me wonder how that will work in a world where humans did not exist. After all,  Mega evolution, according to the games, was first discovered by the first meeting of humanity and Rayquaza.  I did ended up having mega stones exist but this did lead me to a interesting idea. This idea being what would happened had Pokemon mega evolved were to breed with normal Pokemon. This eventually lead me to the idea of Bestias and making them a subspecies. Lewis ended up becoming one and I took the concept behind him needing blood into account when working on how Bestias typically tend to be. I did also pulled some werewolf inspirations in terms of their Feral Form as well (And the whole being affected by the moon cough).

Ah yes, Hati. I think it's best if I explain Hati as a character. Hati (or Manny) was the son of a Zoroark and Samurott. He took after his mother more so than his father, (His mother is the Zoroark) As such, his personality was something like this: Manny will flirt with anything that moves and seems to rarely takes things seriously. He tend to give nicknames anyone he meets, though he will settle on calling someone ‘honey’ if he can’t think of one. If you want to be perfectly honest, the male’s personality seems to revolve him being a flirty gentleman. However, this personality is meant to be a mask. With his wits, the male is able to wrap others around his little finger. It’s rather scary thing when you consider the fact the male ‘true side’ is rather manipulative and twisted to the point it goes against a traditional Samurott ways.

If you look at Lewis personality, you will notice it's the same Manny. Perhaps with a bit more detail if anything. However, I took a bit more advantage of Hati's personality with Lewis' species. job and a few aspects I added to Lewis' personality. If you are aware of how Lopunny is normally depicted on the lovely realm on the internet, I decided to take that concept but play with it more while moving to a more darker angle. Well as dark as you assume it will get based on his personality and species alone. I always liked playing with a Pokemon species and what people associate with them while giving it a sharp 180. It's always interesting.

(When you post this and toyhouse decided not to post it)

Runa ChickieDee

What made you decide to change Lewis from having Gliscor ancestry to being a Bestia? How did he evolve haha jokes I got em from the original character Hati? Like what was the thought process that made those changes?

Ahhhh thank you!

I kinda had a basic idea of what I wanted her to look like from the start? I knew that I wanted her to have a somewhat simpler outfit since her wings and extra limbs would already set her up as a supernatural being. I also knew that I wanted a lot of focus on the eyes (hence the lack of pupils/irises and the very dramatized eyelashes).

A lot of her design is based off of the Primrose Moth (pictured in the spoiler below for anyone who doesn't like bugs lmao;;;) such as the thin rather than fluffy antenna and the fluff around her neck and color scheme.  Her design was actually pretty clear to me from the start, although the wings changes a little from being more angular like a normal moth's to the more round design she has now (mostly because I thought that the round design fit her a little better!)

What kind of creating process did you have with Runa's design (it's lovely I'm so much in love!!!) ? Did you have any direct inspirations, and did something change during the designing progress? Or was her design perfectly clear from the start?

What made you set the specific rules to your werewolves?

Honestly just like 80% of my seemingly well thought out things, I just did it on a whim! I'm a big fan of using really common concepts and themes and trying to make them more "mine" and do something I could call my own, so I just went on with whatever I had in mind for werewolves and soon it just kind of started making sense to me haha. I actually have werewolves in other universes too and they all have different lores, but I have used the other lores in a way I could avoid using the same elements in this one!

Do you have more werewolves in your cast, or at least have you thought of other werewolf cases in Henri's family or society?

Definitely, both in Henri's worldsetting and in others as well! Henri is currently the only one of his kind whose bio I have up, but I hope I'll actually be able to submit another werewolf in the next two weeks! He should also expand the lore with the whole breeding and fur colours and the myths of legendary werewolves who can turn humans into full fledged werewolves rather than just beasts. Also he is going to give more light into the werewolf society where Henri is involved in!

What is the general relationship of werewolves vs other fantasy creatures in this setting, and what is Henri's relationship with that (does he share the same opinions as most werewolves, etc)?

Werewolves are considered demons, as they originate from the demon realm. However, they have a particularly strong tie to humans, and so domesticated werewolves live in the human realm among humans (whereas archaic werewolves live in the wilderness in tribes and have minimal human contact, but still live in the human world). Werewolves are generally really chill folk and don't really have much beef with other species aside from foxes, but it's more like rivarly than anything? Or like a running joke similar to how Finns and Swedes are constantly in a friendly rivalry with each other - that sort of deal.

A point of interest is probably the fact that werewolves and vampires of this universe are actually pretty good friends! Vampires rule the night and werewolves are more day creature, and so they can have each others' backs when the others re resting! Vampires can sometimes also look after werewolves during full moon nights when they're not quite themselves, which is a really good thing honestly. In Henri's case he is also very chill about other demon realm (= fantasy) creatures, and his family also has some ties to local vampires so that they can work together. Henri's household has actually struct a blood deal with vampires so that in exchange of their blood every once in a while the vampires will make sure to keep an eye out for the household members during full moons. Also sometimes they bake sweets for them because while vampires only need blood, many enjoy human food as a luxury.

I find myself wanting to ask where did you get the inspiration for Henri's werewolf lore but more specifically, what made you set the specific rules to your werewolves? Do you have more werewolves in your cast, or at least have you thought of other werewolf cases in Henri's family or society? What is the general relationship of werewolves vs other fantasy creatures in this setting, and what is Henri's relationship with that (does he share the same opinions as most werewolves, etc)?

Thank you! :D I actually... Dreamed her. In my dream she was in the ongoing RP story at the time, and she was so small and adorable but she confessed that she liked necromancy, but not like the usual necromancer! It was much more scientific than that. The fact that she was a skeleton was striking too, but not that unusual as the RP story allowed all sorts of creatures. I kept her very similar to my dream all along, and since I did need a character in this RP story I made her Real and started to use her >:3

I'm not sure what made the visuals of my dream make her up, it's probably a big mix of memories and media. I would say it was undertale but my dream was remarkably 3D and I don't imagine the undertale characters in 3D when I think about them.

how does daniel feel about his mother's death? i know he blames himself, but what kind of lasting effect did it have on him? also, how does he feel about his father now? does he want to meet him at all?

--

To be perfectly honest I haven't had this baby that long!! I originally made her (the very first) design here- https://ghostkomochi.deviantart.com/art/sketchy-sketch-508865664

in 2015!! She wasn't meant to be me at all, more of just a random chara doodle. I joined a singing group in like later 2015-early 2016 and they required us to have an 'idolsona' basically us as an idol. So that's where Haruka came in! Honestly her design has remained quite unchanged since her creation she basically just got her lil wings and crown and that's it! At first her hair was meant to be like blonde-ish though (in the doodle I linked to)

By the time I had decided on her as an idolsona, her hair was black and she had wings and purple eyes!! :) Story wise at first she was just a student, but when she became my idolsona, she was already a princess of dogs!! The idea for her world came later tho. :)

fuelli

Since Haruka is your sona, has a developed backstory as well as lots of art, I guess you've had her for a very long time, isn't? How long? (because yeah sometimes OCs are older than what TH shows) Moreover, did she evolved a lot since her creation, both story-wise and design-wise? Do you have any "old versions" of her to show or talk about, or did she basically stayed the same since her creation? :0

Anyone from The Paradoxal Collection or Flying Popcorn please!

Hehe hello again! owo Thank you so much for the questions and the nice words ♥

Was there any particular reason or desire that made you decide to make the set of OCs based off of biblical characters?

Well, I've already answered a similar question, but long story short, despite not being religious at all, I've a really huge interest in biblical/religious stuff since many years, and I love characters and stories who are based on already existing stuff so it was pretty natural for me to do it! I also enjoy seeing MY interpretations coming to life instead of just looking at other people's ones, and I like to deal with "risky" topics such as religion lmao ~

How did you go about deciding the abilities and stories for Raphaël?

Most of Raphaël's abilities, personality, as well as his brotherly attitude towards Tobie comes from the Book of Tobit, which is one (if not THE) most well-known biblical text where this character appear! I think that this story is really cute and is often forgotten in modern, pop culture interpretations of this angel, so I wanted to emphasize on it haha ~ The rest is just me imagining possible interactions between him and the rest of the cast!

Do you design your characters first or do you have a story in mind then design them afterwards?

Well, it can change from time to time, but basically, my process when making characters for TPC goes like this: First, I pick a biblical figure (or sometimes another source) to make an OC from, and I do research about said figure on the Internet. Both their "canon" appearance and the way they're perceived in popular culture is important to me, since I like to play with that. Then, I start to get ideas about their place in the setting, the story, their relationship with already existing characters from I've learned (or already know) about said figure. I also come up a rough design and personality, which I develop step by step the more I get idea; TH is really helpful to me since I can record any idea I get here before putting the character's page on public. To sum up, it's story first, design later most of the time!

Smiley PicklePantry

What were the hardest aspects of Roxie to write about when you were designing her? Hard as in, what did you have difficulty figuring out? Her voice? Her relationships? How'd you figure them out? Or are there still some difficulties you have?

Nah, nah, it's not boring at all! I LOVE masked characters, and I remember thinking about how unusual it'd be for a character to have a paper bag for a mask. Originally Smiley wasn't meant to be how he was today. I think he was just meant to be a jolly, happy guy that wanted to "smile" all the time, hence the smiley face. But when I rebooted him, serial killer was the instant thought I got for Smiley, and I discussed with another friend to help bulk out his story. It took a while for me to hear more from him, and around the time he was uploaded to Toyhouse I just one day thought, "Why doesn't he paint smiley faces with the blood?" And that became his trademark!

His relation to Resident Evil is kind of his general aspect. He's not meant to be a heavy, psychological guy, he's just meant to be a scary antagonist, just like Jack Baker. He also relentlessly chases you like he does, and will get back up even after being "killed". That was also because I've had scenarios where I've had villain OCs that had been killed off by the protagonist of the RP way too early, and I wouldn't be able to do much about it. So Smiley borrowed Jack Baker's style of regeneration so that he couldn't easily be dismissed in stories.

Barwyn Cleo Mochagatari

(Once again, sorry if this is a boring question) Where did you get the idea for Smiley, and for his motif of getting people to "smile"? I noticed there was a Resident Evil tag on him, but I gotta ask, how did that play into it? :>

---

A few years ago there was a mildly obscure webcomic I checked out called Chameleon Charm, which I had heard about from a fanart post. I really liked the color palettes of the mains, and the chameleon motif was how I got the idea for Barwyn's design and his chameleon curse (as I had falsely assumed that's what the comic would be about--in other words, Barwyn himself has nothing to do with the comic). The reason why his curse runs on his feelings of fear, though, is because fear is the emotion most associated with Barwyn's personality, and also because that was what he was feeling when he acquired the curse in the first place (he was afraid of what the cursed emeralds would do to Callie and swatted her away, leading into him touching them and becoming affected).

And Barwyn's transformations are more-or-less involuntary--if he turns into a chameleon, he can't quite control when he'll turn back, although luckily for him if the object of his terror doesn't go away, he doesn't stay in the form for more than a few hours at worst. If anything the curse severely inconveniences him at this point instead of being something actually horrible when he was new to it. :>

hedgemaze

How did you come up with the idea for Barwyn's chameleon curse, and how did you decide that feelings of fear would trigger him to transform? Does he have to stay afraid to stay as a chameleon (if he wants to spy, etc.), or can he control when he changes back?

Ask me about anyone from Catband

Sorry for the late reply! I don't mind at all, haha! I love any questions, and you ask some good ones. c: This one is killing me, because it's another GREAT question that is kind of spoilery to answer! I'll try my best to say what I can.

So, if you've noticed similarities between the two rival bands: you're right! It's absolutely intentional, and a big theme of the comic in general is that people are more alike than they are different. Jill and Izzy, as leaders of their respective bands, hate each other utterly, but although they do have their differences (certainly their backgrounds and lives are quite different), their personalities are very similar. Do they hate each other because two similar poles of a magnet can't stand each other, or because they think they're more different than they are? Or is it just because they both want to win, and the other is their primary obstacle? On their profiles, Jill calls Izzy as asshole with a band of mall punks, and Izzy calls her a twee hipster. They definitely see each other as opposites on some kind of musical sincerity spectrum-- both think they are the real deal and the other is a poser. And, without getting into it too much, both are interpreting what they think is the other's motivation for entering this contest in a certain way, but they don't know what the other was really thinking. And we all know what happens when you assume...

Of course, then there's the other members of the bands. It's not 1:1 with the rest of them nor intended to be, but Haggis and Amber are, for example, both introverted, creative guitarists who were dragged into this by their boisterous best friends. But they have somewhat different personalities and handle situations differently. Haggis will explode in a regrettable way if he's pushed; Amber will disappear. Both probably shouldn't be overlooked. Overall, yes, you can see the two bands as the girls (and Bane) vs. the boys, indie vs. punk, or whatever else, but they're certainly intended to be in parallel.

As for some of the other groups, Les Revanchistes, the freaks, and the staff of the music venue are from different storylines and probably don't know each other, and they are, of course, quite different, but they're all passionate people who care about their "homes", and that's also a theme.

Kei de Lima reinapepiada

I keep asking you stuff haha I hope you don't mind-

Sometimes when making a story, we decide that the protagonists and the antagonists are opposites and/or similar in some ways, is that the case for your story? If so, I'd love to hear some of them! Moreso, in general, just talk about opposites and similarities between rival groups (can be the two main rival bands or the rest of the groups), if you planned on them!

_____

The inspiration behind Kei's appearance is that... He's originally a key lime pie gijinka, specifically a key lime pie I baked and was obsessed over how good it tasted and how good it came out every time. After playing a dessert dating sim I wanted to design my own dessert gijinka and he was born. His albinism is just how I translated the meringue topping, so that's why he's not reeeally albino? Like he has white hair but I never planned on it having any other impact other than it being meringue lol. Now that he's human he's just weird pff

As for the concept of god... I'll have to say it's none of these! Even though he's undeniably someone capable of 'magic' he doesn't like the concept of it, and even if he's witnessed the existence of a god and even he himself is a demigod, he identifies as an atheist. But all in all, the major reason why he's uncomfortable with it is that in his original universe, god was a Very bad guy, and also his caretaker. He didn't know until the very end so he has a very bitter impression of gods in general :( the subject always reminds him of how he was living with the enemy without realizing it.

Mercury spacecadet

What was the inspiration behind Kei's appearance/albinism? :oo Was it just something you were like 'oh this looks good' or is there some sort of significance? Also, why does the subject of God make him uncomfortable? Is it because he can basically bend reality and in a sense probably enter a reality where there the concept of a god doesn't exist, or does he think he is a god?

--

;w; actually no! surprisingly mercury was not inspired by any cartoon!! in terms of quality of their cartoon show, think of like the og carebears and stuff like that. originally, Mercury was a design i drew for artist tryouts for a closed species back on chickensmoothie in 2013 (throwback omg) but i didn't get accepted. i got lowkeyyyy attached to their design however and translated it over into a regular wolf/fox kinda thing

https://ghostkomochi.deviantart.com/art/New-Fursona-409379169

They were called Galaga for a while but I couldn't get attached to their name or design like mainly bc it was too hard for me to draw consistently.

however i still did love them!! in around like,, late 2016 or so i wanted to get a fursuit, but i didn't want to get one of my reg fursona zipper! so i got a suit of mercury after heavily simplifying their design (removing the galaxy on back and in their tail, removing the eye galaxy things, etc) - i thought they'd be a very cute chara that people would love and become attached to! i came up with their story on a whim- basically this:

I'm very into the 80's!! mostly architectural styles from the 80's. i looove dead malls and abandoned places and doing things like urbexing... back then i wasn't super into it, but i noticed mercury's colours were very similar to the 80's motifs i loved! as i said i love dead malls and would love to live in one- so mercury gets to do it for me. ive also had a fascination with abandoned things, hence why the mall is abandoned. honestly unsure how i came up w their story, but i wanted something slightly sad and just thought about it and typed it out really quick and ran it by my bestie who usually helps me character plan and she loved it. then... yup, their story! :D

Orca

Well, I can't escape from Mercury. Seize the moment.

Was Mercury inspired by any particular cartoon? Did you have the "cartoon character gets warped to the real world" concept in mind from the start, or did Mercury exist before you came up with it, and you just decided it would suit them? How did you come up with that concept, anyway?

Feel free to ask me about anyone.

...Wow, I completely forgot to answer. Playing too much Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I was inspired by one of my friends who was making a similar series called Chris the Stick Adventures. Sir Hottie McHottie was made first, almost a year prior to James the Dragon.
