Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 13 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

I see you on TH a lot; how long have you been on this site? And when did you first start doing art?

Oh, good questions! I'd love to see a cosplay of my main lady, Achi. That'd be badass and aesthetic af. Dani would also be a fun cosplay to see.

I'd probably invite Horen over for dinner because she has that spunky and fun personality that I tend to vibe with. She's kind of my ideal friend in a sense. Maybe Bellazhanna because she's a classy lady; but she's also very hard to please lol.

Out of your OCs who would you like most to see an IRL cosplay of and why? If you had to pick one of your characters to invite over for dinner, who would it be?

Your fave songs?
Right now I've been listening to the following pretty much on repeat:
teen suicide - the same things happen to me all the time, even in my dreams
dan deacon - when I was done dying
AJJ - Kokopelli Face Tattoo
Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses

What type of exotic fruit do you think ur main ocs would be?
Oof, I'd have to super think about that before being able to answer. I do have some OCs that I already have fruit assigned too since I like giving my characters "symbols". Not all of it is exotic though.
Red Apples - Jeb and Sandra
Green Apples - Adam
Yellow Apples - Marry Anne
Apples in general - Lottie
Purple Plums - Meriwether
Pomegranates - Cornelius
Pomelo - N'deel
Raspberries - Benji

Is that an... Otter? Or a porcupine? As your profile pic? lol

-i honestly don't remember , i found it in my saved images

My question is, what do you think the most important thing to have for an OC/Profile is to make it... Look nice for people viewing it?

-i have no idea? good colours? not having too much text?

A good story/backstory? Fancy page layout? Do you think it's good as is if the character/formatting is nice looking? Something else?

It's fine! I'm an author too, I love talking about my stories :D

I have WAY too many stories, I started in like... 3rd grade when I got into Skydancers (The horses with butterfly wings) and started making my own fanfic picture books about them XD IDK it developed from there, I think my first real story though was like... 5th grade maybe? I can't even remember, I first started writing things out on binder paper so I have a shit ton of stuff from that era. I would generally write fanfics, I don't think my first original story was till sometime in middle school maybe? I can't remember, but the two earliest that stand out to me (But for sure weren't my first likely) were Sutekina Kupurru (I probably butchered the spelling) and the Ninja Angels (I think Moon Eyes falls in as one of my first too but not sure). I never got far with either, but none of my stories have ever been completed XD

WAIT scratch that, I just remembered my first story OML this is going to be a long reply XD I'm so sorry, you asked a big question XD My first original story was my creation story, when I was little my imagination was huge and I was a bit more mature for my age at the time, and with my abusive father and lonely nights of having trouble to sleep (I still do this) I'm insert myself into a story and start playing it out in my head, and I'd eventually doze off doing it. My first one doing this, and most recurring, was a story about how a tribe of wolves needed their leader to go out and find a mate, and the tribe of wolves were no ordinary wolves, but shapeshifters, so the mate would be human that they'd turn into- you get the idea. XD They chose me and would kidnap me, and integrate me into their pack, and I'd have puppies and live a happy life. I think this was my way of escape at the time... Either way I got obsessed with him, with the story, and even through the fifth and sixth grade, I was obsessed with this story, so I decided to write it. I think I only ever got halfway though XD I think Moon Eyes is the only story that's not a fanfic I've completed, and that needs HELLA reworking ^^;

My favorite story? Geez, that's a doozy. I have so many stories that I like, most are completed in my head but not on paper XD Of my fanfics though, def gonna be Sleepless Shadows, that's my most recent and I love it, it's just... I need to get back into writing ^^; Red Fate Shinshou could easily compete as my favorite, but like... It's a story my friend is turning into a comic based on an RP we did, so I don't think it's the story that's my favorite as much as the character's stories. Of my original stories, too many, though I guess.... HMMM Lemme double check. Oh geez I have hardly any of my stories there XD I guess of those Legend of Krea? I had a webcomic going of it but stopped due to my closed species.

I guess for your third question I already answered it with the first, but that's only part of the answer. I guess another big factor is the RPs I do with other people helping to build the character's story and personality. My... Character creation is weird... I will generally make an NPC, and give them a form, then randomly make a name for them, then start building on them in the story. Most of my characters have themes, I think up something as their core, and build their personality or abilities off of that. Sometimes their core isn't made apparent until later. Sometimes they are left as an NPC and never get a core or anything, other times I use them for a fanfic character for a quick thing, then insert them somewhere else. Sometimes the opposite happens, and it makes me want to establish the character more, give them more of a personality, delve into their abilities more... Sometimes I even go to a dollmaker, and start throwing things together, and that helps build the character. IDK if that answers your question, my character creation process is weird compared to others I've been told XD

Oh wait, you also asked about plot and worlds XD Worlds is a pretty easy one, since a lot of my stories are fanfics XD For my original stories however, most are set either in current era, or a fantasy realm, and I generally don't build on the world too much, leaving it to be build as I expand the story. The only world I've ever built on was Legend of Krea, where I have built the entire world and even beyond out of scratch, making NPCs, creature and monster species, the lands, names of cities and towns, capitals, governments, it was a doozy to think up everything tbh, but as for the process I started with the basis for the world, then made a world map, then made creatures, then the governing factions and leaders, how the world works, and slowly started to work from the big picture into the tiny details, the towns and villages, throwing random names in the air for everything XD For my plot, for ALL my stories, I generally first think of a starting point. Who am I introducing, what are they going to be doing, what importance do they hold to the story, etc, then I think of an end goal, and what their motivation and influence is to reach that end goal. Everything in between? Psh, I just leave that up to intuition and fate. I generally never plan out the filler, and just write towards the end, adding in trials and things as I see fit. I like this method, because then even I don't know what's going to happen next, It makes me excited for the next chapter myself XD

I hope all this answered your question, sorry it's long! I tried my hardest to keep from rambling, or this would have turned out probs double or more than this XD I talk a LOT when it's a subject I enjoy, and this talk has gotten me into wanting to write more again XD PM me if you have any more questions or comments, I'd LOVE to talk more about this ^^

Lemon-Cricket - Hey there, just letting you know that you're supposed to edit your original comment to ask a question, not make a new comment, as that can cause the thread to get confusing and messy.

Wolvenhyde

Looking through your character folders, you seem to have a lot of stories. Do you have a favourite one? What was the first story you started working on? And how do you come up with ideas for your stories/worlds/characters?

(Sorry for so many questions haha, I'm a story writer so I get curious about these things.)

Edit reply: Oooh, that was fun to read! I wasn't expecting such a long response. XD Your way of creating story plots (thinking up the beginning and end, and then not really planning anything in between) sounds pretty much identical to the way I write plots. I never plan anything. XD Things are much more interesting that way since I don't know what's going to happen next!

My favourite story that I've written changes all the time, but I think the one I'm currently proudest of/happiest with is Vincent. Not only did I somehow manage to write the entire story in a weekend, but it's also the kind of story I wouldn't normally write (modern Earth instead of fantasy world, cat characters instead of humans or dragons, etc.). I'm also very proud of the writing style and 'mood' I think I managed to capture in it.

My main inspiration was a book I read shortly before I started writing it; The Last Black Cat by Eugene Trivizas. It's very, very dark (a warning if you ever decide to read it), but it's a really interesting story and made me want to write something myself with cat characters.

My favourite character from Vincent would probably be the protagonist himself! It's a short story with only a few characters, so it was hard to develop the side characters as much as I did Vincent. Plus, he's the protagonist so I kinda needed to like him.

So, I saw on your profile that you’ve done a few projects and novels. Which of them are you most proud of and what inspired you to make that story? Who is your favorite character from said story and why?

Answer: As a self-proclaimed magical girl, an ideal world to save people from is one with scarier monsters! But a more serious answer is: I like the concept of mahou shoujo and horror mixed together. On the contrary, I LOVE monsters and would want to save everyone by befriending them.

Leit

daiyuna I hope this isn't too weird a question but I'm genuinely curious what you mean on your profile by "wants to save the world from body horror like monsters". Just not a fan of scary monster types, or...?
Edit: Hell YEAH I can get behind that

Answer:
Anything by Johnny Hollow.

SapphireBatWings

What is your favorite song that most people you've talked to have never heard of.

Leviticus I've actually listened to Johnny Hollow! Firefly is my favorite.

That's actually a hard one because I've seen most of the ones I was excited for. The Conjuring 3 comes to mind as it is a favorite franchise of mine. A Quite Place II is another.  Gretel & Hansel would be another. Basically I'm a horror and fantasy fan.

PawzTheDrFoxFan

Ok ok, this question is gonna sound lame, but what upcoming movies are you excited for?

CupidCola

This may sound strange. Why did you choose that profile picture? It's honestly so cute!

Leit

What's the last book you read? What was it about, and how would you rate it out of ten?

Uhhh I don't really have any one particular playlist that I listen to "most often" cus I'm constantly bouncing between them depending on my mood/activity BUT lately my sort of go-to for general chilling out has been my playlist for my friend's webcomic "The End of Main"

pixiipaws

Oh god.... I know this is bad but I don't really read books... I have a developmental disability that makes reading very hard for me..... I read a book called "Going Bovine" maybe 6 years ago and that was the last book I remember enjoying.

What is the name of the playlist you most often listen to?

hedgemaze

pixiipaws (I think you got the game mixed up, but that's ok! you're supposed to answer the question the person after you asks you)

What are some traits you really love to see or use in characters?

what is your favourite part when doing a drawing? Like, the sketch, the lineart, the shading, etc. As well as what is your favourite body part to draw?

My favorite aspect is lighting/colors/environment! I like sketching and inking, but the colors are when a piece comes to life for me. My favorite body part to draw is probably eyes or ears-- I stylize those a lot, and they're just fun. Weirdly, I feel like ears give the character more "character" than their eyes!

Thanks for the questions!

3. Lucky for you me and some friends were reading shitty probably untrue nz facts yesterday for fun! So how about, only about 5% of the population is people, the rest are animals
