Ask about the above OC's VISUAL DESIGN

Posted 5 years, 7 months ago (Edited 1 year, 6 months ago) by RadiantRaindragon

Hello and welcome!

This is a question game specifically for talking about characters' physical appearances. Their outfit? Their hairstyle? Their scars? An accessory they always wear or a sword they always carry? You get the idea.

15/02/2019:

To help clarify what kinds of questions are allowed in this game, I've made a list of correct and incorrect examples! Hopefully this should help out anyone who's stuck thinking of a question!

Format example:

Person 1's post: Why does Spike have a necklace of house keys? Edit: Adder got the scar during a criminal job that went a little wrong.

Person 2's post: Where did Adder get that scar from?

You can post IC if you want the next person to question a specific character, or you can post OOC and let them pick for themselves. If you post IC, try to stick to characters that have something noteworthy in their designs - while there's nothing wrong with more plain characters, it can be hard to think of an interesting question about them.

-Rules-

1. Stick to the theme of the game. Your post must include at least one question related to the character's design. You are allowed to ask non-design questions as extras.
2. Don't be rude or passive-aggressive towards other people or their characters in any way.
3. Wait for at least 3 people to post before you go again (unless over 12 hours have passed since the last post, then it's fair game for anyone).
4. All characters must have at least one, SFW art piece. This means characters with no art, or only 18+/filtered art, cannot be posted. You are allowed to skip people if they have no art or only 18+/filtered art.
5. Please do not post the same character repeatedly. This is to lessen repetition of the game.
6. Do not skip people (unless they're breaking Rule 4). Even if the above user has blocked you, that is not valid reason for skipping them.

I actively monitor the thread for rule-breaking, but if you think I missed something, please PM me and let me know.

If you break rules: Depending on the severity of the situation, I may either PM you with a warning or immediately ban you from the game. Regardless of severity, you can be banned if you repeatedly break rules.

Cation has a pretty unusual colour scheme/patterning for a 'normal' cat. Is there anything in particular that made you design her that way/inspired her design?

Mostly, I just like putting little markings on certain characters. There's a difference between the marks on Adder and Ethereal though. Adder's is a tattoo, which he got after joining a criminal underworld organisation. It was the only way he could prove he was a part of the organisation and to not have other criminals attack him on sight. Ethereal's is just a natural marking that's often found on her species of dragon (though markings of her complexity are quite rare).

Hacibee

I noticed some of your shapeshifter characters have some kind of symbol on their shoulders; Specifically Addar and Ethereal. Is there any reason behind the symbols?

Aahh~! Yeah that beast~! Glad you like him uwu. He is actually partly shark; but thats the short answer.

In my little universe I keep the majority of my babs in, Kemonomimi's are pretty common, but didnt start appearing until XX years passed. Its kinda like how quirks appeared in the BNHA universe; they just appeared, and no one knows why what when or how [However, there is a reason behind it in my 'verse, but its too lengthy to post here.] Even so, full anthros and sea-dwelling creatures are rather rare, due to how frail they are outside of the water [Anthros are rare simply because the odds of being entirely covered in fur is rare]. For sea-dwelling subhumans, their skin will, more times than not, become the skin varient of their original species. Ala'i's skin texture became almost entirely made of very thin placoid scales; and thus, takes on the coloration as well. Along with this, more times than not, sea-dwelling human's skin will dry out at a much faster rate; and can't stay in direct sunlight for long without getting dry skin peeling off. This is due to most sea-creature's needs of being wet, or their tissues will dry out and, soon enough, die.
Sad fun-ish fact, not all sea-dwelling sub-humans are born with gills. This causes multiple issues for them. If they are lucky, they would not get the tissues of their breed, and they would rather be more human; but more cases result in them dying young, as they need water to keep skin hydrated, but can't stay under for extended periods of time. Lucky for Ala'i, he has those much-needed gills.
Theres a lot more I put into the species, along with the other sub-species, but I think the sea-creatures one is the most extensive and interesting~! [feel free to pm me if you're curious on knowing more uwu]

fizzelston

You you cannot upload such a great looking dude and don't explain his kickass looking looks! Can you tell me something about his skin colour or those gills in his neck!?

Any in my unsorted folder will do!

In all honesty, I based him off of those 'classic cartoon villains' !
Twirly moustache: Check
Sharp beaklike nose: Check
Your girlfriend tied to the train tracks: ... Check?

Mal LNU (Last-Name-Unknown) Lonestarcelt

fizzelston In regards to Roswell were there any major influences in regards to his design. Be it from pop culture or simply something that inspired a particular aspect such as an old photo or a place being the spark for a part of his design?

I can answer both the questions about Mal being incredibly skinny alongside the heterochromia (and the pointed ears and spider fingers) Mal from the outset was intended to have a design that was slightly unsettling in terms of how they looked. They were just too tall, too gaunt, their ears were too pointed, their eyes don't match, even the fact they are always smiling. Basically visual short-hand to put Mal in something of an uncanny valley territory. Everything about them was meant to feel off when it came to how they looked. The skinniness was meant to exaggerate these features a bit more. Long spider-like fingers are much easier to notice on hands attached to bony arms. An incredibly tall frame is slightly more unsettling if they look too thin to support themselves. It has nothing to do with their backstory (at least not to my knowledge because truth be told I don't even fully know Mal's backstory and I created them. I leave it vague enough for people to bring stuff to that table but there are a few details I know for sure). But nah they're just naturally really skinny.

As for the scrubs? Most people never really see Mal outside the workplace and at work they are almost always in scrubs since they like to be professional and ready to work so I just wanted their default outfit to be one that people saw almost day-in and day-out.

Orca

Raddishes Nice name. Why does Edge wear an outfit that exposes his stomach? Wouldn't that be extremely dangerous considering he's a monster hunter? Besides the coat, does this outfit have any other significance?

Just go with anyone besides Barb. (Everything about her design came from a Let's Make an OC meme.)

Dr. Fire came waaaaaayyyyyyyyyy before any of the others. I felt that if I made Dr. Air a velociraptor, it would still work for an swift air-themed dino. And yeah, the extra doodads were because of the air theme.

Vengeance, "Justice" Dohmalore

Your other dinos seem to be mostly adherent to Actual Dinosaur Anatomy, What made you decide to give Dr. Air wings & sails?  I mean obviously for the connection to air, but why not just make her a pterosaur instead of Dr. Fire?

(takes 3 weeks to answer this cuz the hurricane fucked my shit)

What inspired its design (which I think is a pretty interesting one)? What made you decide to base it on a mixture of a cockroach and an orca? Also, does Vengeance have eyes? Is there a specific purpose to the long horns/antennae-like things on its head?

When I was designing it the big feature piece was just.  MOUTH.  Mouth & dark & big scary arms.  When I actually went to try to draw it tho it came out looking like an orca-bug, so I just went with it lmao.  After I decided on no eyes I just wanted something up there, and the antennae felt right.

If not, can they still see in some way or do they rely on other senses to navigate?

Demons can sense auras/aura trails, and it mainly uses those to navigate with!  As long as it's in a place where people frequent it can figure out where walls & other obstacles are based on where the trails aren't.  And it mostly only ever is on the move to track down people, so being unable to see is rarely an issue.

Whenever it wants to investigate an area/object that's not people, it relies more on smell/touch(which is wear the antennae come in).

Anastasia RadiantRaindragon

For Vengeance:

What inspired its design (which I think is a pretty interesting one)? What made you decide to base it on a mixture of a cockroach and an orca?

Also, does Vengeance have eyes? If not, can they still see in some way or do they rely on other senses to navigate? Is there a specific purpose to the long horns/antennae-like things on its head?

(Sorry for the bucket of questions. XD)

Thank you! :D

It was more Bellatrix's personality that inspired Ana, since I think Ana's design is more out of my own head. The colours... I think I chose them because of what I associate them with. Purples, blacks, reds and dark blues could possibly be seen as 'evil' or 'chaotic' colours, which suits her personality. Plus, green eyes which are supposed to be common in witches.

(Some of her spells are also based off Harry Potter spells, you might be able to tell which ones if you've read the books. :))

The fluff on her chest and tail is a pretty common thing in my dragons - it was originally supposed to be for just one of my species, but has now expanded to a lot of them. I just like drawing fur, so I guess it's more for fun that any other reason. And I like the visual contrast of smooth scales and fluff. :)

Wait, you have a ColorsLive account? I gotta find you. XD You're the first person I've seen on this site who knows about it.

AlleycatIrony

i loveeee anastasia's design, and i know she has 'HP inspired' as a tag and that u drew inspiration from bellatrix, but what elements of the character was it that inspired her? is there a reason u chose the colour palette that u did and patches of fur instead of scales?
(also i realised some of her art is from colorslive i gotta start using that app again lol)

anyone is cool to pick!

EDIT: sorry this probably is a terrible answer but i literally have no recollection/memory of why i made zach or where i got his design/colour insp so i really can't say i'm afraid ;w;
i do recall wanting a bunny OC bc literally everyone else seemed to have one and i thought they were cute, but i also didn't want it to 'just be a bun' so... bunbug >:3c ngl not much thought went into his design really he was very much an impulse creation which is probably why i remember nothing 😅

Lilina

So, about Zachary, how did you come up with his color palette?  What brought you into the idea of making a moth/bunny/centaur hybrid? Also, why did you come up with his design?

Anyone is fine!

Ehhh this one is pretty difficult to answer, but the first thought that came out shortly after creating Catherine was about her relation to candy, so this is what resulted in Devil Lollipop's creation.

I don't know how I came up with Sweetonio, since I hardly care about him that much, but I felt like making a unicorn would suit the overall theme of the Devil Lollipop universe, and also make him look like some cutesy-looking pony that is actually more of a badboi than you'd expect.

I THINK THE OVERARCHING QUESTION I HAVE IS WHAT INSPIRED DEVIL LOLLIPOP?

It’s so cartoony and it reminds me of something but I can’t put my finger on it.

about Sweetonio (my favourite), how did this character come about? what is the inspiration for his design and personality?

I chose him to become a youkai because he... doesn't really look human, haha. I could see that they had a deer thing going on, so I just looked up deer youkai and ended up stumbling on the old belief that deer were messengers of the gods, (that's why you see so many near some temples), and originally he WAS going to be a messenger, but I ended up changing it so that he just became a standard cultivator who delivered messages from his sect. Also their hair reminded me of Shokugeki no Souma's Isshiki, so he was also a source of inspiration for Kasuga personality wise.

My Eastern continent is the most developed so it's easy to slot characters in, but its not the same for my other locations.

Jaystripes

uhh i saw that i can do any of yours because you do not care, so i chose Kasuga. I know you did not design them, but i do not see anything on the designer's deviantart about them, so how come you chose them to be a youkai and with the personality they have? Did their plant looking design just inspire it in a way because you like eastern lore?

ok so originally i posted this as Glass but you can choose him or any one of the characters that I designed :> don't choose uhhh sonas, or characters i didn't design thanks

oh! Full! She's a nice one. In response to your questions:

-My first thoughts were, "well, how the heck am i gonna draw this guy multiple times?" turns out it's actually really easy to draw. I was also thinking about where she'd fit in with the story- she fits in with the lore, but has no main part right now.

-The colors kind of change, but they were meant to represent a sort of stained-glass feel. The wing appendages are always purple/pink, to differentiate them, and the eye and rhombus are always a light yellow, to represent the light she brings.

-The ancient-ish aesthetic is representative of how she's a legend at this point. The only remaining documents about her existence aren't even documents- they are stained glass paintings. Along with this, ancient-ish lookin characters give off the more... not holy, but... uhh i cant find the word. Kind of big, legendary creatures i guess.

Lilina

Since 12 hours have passed, I'll post again.

You have really solid character designs, but I'll ask about Full.

- What were your first thoughts when making Full?

- Why did you choose the colors for Full?

- Why did you choose the ancient-ish aesthetic for this design?

-

Anyone is fine, just be careful on who you choose, since some of them aren't designed by me.

What inspired me to create Dellingr was about the mecha animals you see in most media and mediums, such as a mecha dragon. They're actually made of moonstone and platinum, both which are unusual materials for a mecha like them. The tuft of hair on their head was just there because I have no legit idea. About their movement however, it's a mix of both.
