Most of, if not all of the cats living in the Enchanted Woods are descendants of those brought by the human witches. See, the humans believed that having a familiar, often a cat, would help them strengthen their magic abilities. There were four separate groups of witches, and so they created four different environments to better their connection with the forest magic. The Northern Witches practiced water magic. The cats who are direct descendants of the first familiars of the Northern Witches have denser, thicker fur, and furry paws with papillae (small bumps) to help them grip onto the ice like polar bears. The Eastern Witches practiced nature magic. The cats who are direct descendants of the first familiars of the Eastern Witches have lighter fur, a deeper connection with the plants, and tend to have either green eyes or some sort of plant on their body. However, green eyes and carrying plants are not distinct tells. The Southern Witches practiced death magic. The cats who are direct descendants of the first familiars of the Southern Witches have thinner, patchier fur, more skeletal features, and an odd fascination with death. The Western Witches practiced light and air magic. The cats who are direct descendants of the first familiars of the Western Witches have lighter, airier fur, seem energized when either in the sun, or when it's windy, and their eyes can seem like they glow in the dark.
