Diet and Dietary Information

The diet of Wishira tribe members consists of assorted flora and fauna found all across the many different areas of shroom island- most of which can only be found on the isle. Tribe members are usually proficient at fishing, gathering, and hunting. Despite the year-round temperate climate and apparent abundance, sustainability of island resources is always top priority, and commonly eaten foods are rotated when needed.

Fishing can accomplished with hand-fashioned rods, spears, or basket traps woven from palm fronds. Fishing parties occupy the coastlines where lots of tropical fish can be found. Basket traps are used in the smaller in-island lakes and streams. Small crabs and shellfish can also be gathered from the many tidepools that are scattered along the coast. These are good sources of food, but there are some dangerous fish that toskals need to be wary of- especially when coastal fishing.

For gathering, tribe members are knowledgeable of which fungi and plants are safe for consumption, and which are to be avoided. However, since Wishira natives are genetically immune to many toxins originating on shroom island, outsiders welcomed into the tribe need to take caution; what may be safe for a native member to eat may not be safe for someone who was not born into the tribe.

Typically, hunting isn't the main source of food, but there are plenty of critters for toskals to capture for a tasty meal. There are a variety of critters for Wishira members to hunt on the island, including different kinds of birds, small mammals, and larger mammals. Some can be caught in crafted traps, while others can be hunted by bow and arrow. Since hunting isn't sustainable for all members of the tribe, only a few choose to do so for themselves. However, it is common for large mammals to be hunted and served at important events. Overall, hunting isn't as utilized as fishing and gathering.
