Reign of the Rat Kings

To everyone’s relief, the horde of rats that plagued Ivras in the last few weeks seems to have disappeared, seemingly overnight. Some people say they saw rats chewing on the corks of leftover washed-up potion bottles, trying to get into their contents, but such talk has mostly been ignored. Why would rats chew on potion bottles?
Maybe those rumors should have been taken more seriously… News has spread quickly: in many places, where the rats were especially numerous, strange creatures have been reported—groups of rats moving as one, entangled together by their tails, a murderous red gleam in their eyes as they whip each other into a frenzy.
Mage protectors have been sent out to deal with them, but those without magic have taken up arms against the creatures as well—after all, they’re only rats!

There are many ways to participate. Follow the Story Prompts below for double gold, or simply jump into the fight by creating art, writing, or RP of your mage(s) battling the rat kings.
The Rat Kings are made up of a handful of individual rats, much bigger and more strange-looking than normal rats: some have extra legs or eyes, others have strange hues and colors no healthy rat should have. Some are able to talk, but speak nothing more than illegible babblings without thought behind them. They are aggressive and will try to attack anyone who comes near them with claws and teeth, but they are neither fast nor agile, as the entangled rats don't always seem to be able to agree on where to go.
Rat kings may vary in size and shape, and can appear in groups or alone. They can be destroyed by both mages and nonmages.
Each rat king has 5 HP, so any attack submission worth 5 Gold can destroy a rat king. A submission worth 10 Gold can destroy two, and so on.

story prompt: start
Your character finds themselves on the outskirts of a small town somewhere in Ivras. Evening is quickly coming on, and from somewhere behind them, they hear a skittering sound, like hundreds of tiny claws against the cobblestones.
What do they do?

Your character turns around, and sees a group of rats disappear behind a building. Intrigued, your character follows them… Surprise! A huge ratking suddenly appears, frenzied. The entangled rats seem to have been exposed to some kind of magic—an iridescent substance shimmers around their mouths, and some of the rats have extra eyes and legs.
What do they do?

Your character fights it. For each rat that goes down, the rat king’s movements turn more and more sluggish and slow, fighting both your character and the dead weight of the other rats.
Finally, the rat king falls, and the smaller, normal rats around it scatter in all directions, disappearing into whatever holes they can find.

Your character flees when they get the chance. The rat king rages on, seemingly oblivious, and eventually it waddles off, but its steps are unsteady.
Your character didn’t see where the rat king disappeared to, but if they meet someone, at least they can warn them what’s out there.

Your character ignores the sound and goes on with their business. But the skittering grows louder, and closer… Worried, your character swiftly sneaks to hide behind a wall. A moment later, a large horde of rats rush past, a huge ratking in their midst. The entangled rats look kind of sick and weird, and are definitely too big to be normal rats. Their eyes glimmer with an otherworldly shine.

The rat king walks off towards the edge of town, where a river runs past. Your character watches as it digs up a buried stash of potions, and eagerly drinks a few. For a moment, it seems like the rat king gains new energy, but then it shudders and falls to the ground.
Your character steps closer as the smaller, normal rats scatter in all directions. The rat king seems to be dead, probably from drinking all kinds of potions that should not be mixed together.

Your character attacks the rat king from behind, gaining the upper hand. It flees, and the smaller rats with it. Your character follows, and sees the rat king disappear into a hole dug into the nearby riverbank. Old potion bottles litter the ground before the den.
Well, at least your character can escape the scene without getting pursued. The rat king will be someone else’s problem. All these potions, though… maybe they could be useful for something.
