What are your trademark character archetypes?

Posted 6 years, 3 months ago (Edited 5 years, 6 months ago) by hedgemaze

This was a conversation my friends and I were having earlier about our characters: everyone has certain character archetypes they're a sucker for-- or maybe ones that they can't help but keep making. What's your poison?

You can interpret this generally: maybe archetypes like "jerks with a heart of gold", personality traits like "smug", storylines like "friends who fall in love", whatever types of characters you love to see or create!

My characters:
a) idiots but they try
b) feelings are hard let's never talk about them
c) conflict resolution is hard let's never talk about it

All my forum games and threads

- AW little guy !!! → OH hes a little bit fucked up actually
- almost everybody could do with some therapy. certainly this says nothing about me not at all
- either on the younger side or several hundreds of years old, no in between
- soft and muted colours. I think?
- any romance is less romance and more strong bonds that might (or might not) include traditionally romantic aspects
- questionable morality/grey morals
- attachment issues of some sort
- near everyone has some sort of experience with being othered/alienation/feeling alienated
- no concept of gender (whether that means "my gender is no, do not involve me in that" or "well I'm comfortable being treated as [agab] so shrug")
- "imperfect" trauma victims (imperfect is absolutely a stupid way to describe this, but like. characters who don't fit into the expected victim narrative and behaviour)
- emphasis on culture of origin, even if it's not necessarily super important to the character
- self projection onto everybody and anybody

cicada-days

- characters who are mostly gender neutral

- lovable goof who has Trauma (tm) but is trying their damn best

- stupid bitch representation <3 not exclusively or even mainly himbos/bimbos, but those are included

- ball of adhd energy

- people who are annoying as fuck

- guy (who is probably purple) who try to act sauve/charming but is blatently full of utter shit, just an awful person all around and he is probably also loud and annoying. Very full of himself and cocky

- “shut the fuck up” mom friend

- an actual ball of sunshine and would never hurt a fly

I need more variety in my character writing

usually my ocs end up being big gruff bisexual men with daddy issues and/or are dads with issues- all super stupid, all stupidly sweet
that or they're super curvy ladies with fluffy hair and the magical ability to steal everyone's girlfriend, also with shitty parents

basically all my characters are me but hot (unless they're an animal ofc, then they're just me but cute)

Juicybars

Oh this is easy

1. Scary Women
2. Nerds
3. Aloof, stoic characters

5. Too pathetic to live, too smart to die

honkytonkhell

1. Neurotic repressed gays

2. "Evil" hillbillies that are just kinda stupid

3. Cranky old men

and at least 2 of my characters are all of the above

TheGreatStatic
