This was a conversation my friends and I were having earlier about our characters: everyone has certain character archetypes they're a sucker for-- or maybe ones that they can't help but keep making. What's your poison?
You can interpret this generally: maybe archetypes like "jerks with a heart of gold", personality traits like "smug", storylines like "friends who fall in love", whatever types of characters you love to see or create!
My characters:
a) idiots but they try
b) feelings are hard let's never talk about them
c) conflict resolution is hard let's never talk about it
i asked my bf what all my characters had in common and w/o hesitation he said they're all bottoms so i guess there's that
tho besides that i think a lot of my characters have these in common as well
- mostly all male
- thieves
- snarky/annoying/sleazy yet charismatic men
- strong/formal/serious women
- at least half are autistic (not intentionally, through projecting)
- all around 18-28 years of age on average...ish
a) Literally like...90% of my characters are male; mostly young adults or the equivalent of that in their race's lifespan
b) Pretty guys (I think I can count on one hand the number of manly male characters I have)
c) Guys who were scarred in horrifying (or actually totally stupid) accidents, normally when they were children. Just...scars in general I guess haha.
d) Dumb elves (I am the poster child for taking an 'elegant' race and butchering it with clumsy idiots, apparently)
e) Asexual characters (I think it's probably just because I'm also ace but like...so many of my 'main' characters have been asexual in the past.)
f) Characters who avoid conflict (surprise surprise, another of my own personality traits shining through)
g) Love-hate ships
h) 'Unexpected' ships (so like characters who just somehow ended up together over the course of the story for no logical reason. A lot of my antagonists end up turning into love interests oops)
1) tricksters
2) anything with dragons
3) sarcasm and quips EVERYWHERE
4) the really hyper and naive person who is likely the hero
5) unrequited love on both sides
1. Suffering with their fate, but trying to manage
2. "I may look happy & cute on the outside but I'm dead inside"
3. "I may be an asshole but there's a magic reason for it"
4. People get second chances (or way more than that, depends on the OC lmfAo)
5. Secondary Protag gets all the love drama (rip main, you get no love drama)
6. 2 busy with trying to save the world to love (but if they find love, only d e a t h comes after)
7. WITCHES AND KEMONOMIMIS (save me from the kemonomimis)
8. Meme characters that actually do work in the story (1 VERY CLOSE TO BEING SELF AWARE AT THIS POINT)
9. "Whoops got stabbed, I'll walk it off"
10. Being possessed by something or someone (spooky)
11. DARK COLORS WHAT IS BRIGHT CLOTHES
12. Feelings? I'll tell you for $5. Whoops sorry got not feelings but thanks for the $5
13. Half of my OCs are emotional and the other half are emotionless I don't think there's a between (save them)
1. characters that look younger than they actually are
2. semi-chubby characters
3. charas who look cute and happy but are edgy on the inside actually
4. LESBIANS
5. Pear type body
6. smol charas
7. multiple squads
8. spirits that fuck the minds of humans with problems
9. gHOST AND SPIRITS
10. humanoid OCs
just wanted to say that this is a really darn good thread. now i don't feel so bad about giving my characters such unoriginal personal storylines / personalities! here are a few of my favorite archetypes:
