A Pleasant Surprise

Devin was now 27 years old. He is starting to question the meaning of his life, destroying his psyche in the process. A year ago, he'd gotten back in contact with Cam and they were talking over the phone. When Devin shared his thoughts with him, Cameron's instinct to help came through again.

He suggested that he try therapy. Devin disliked this idea since he wasn't the type to talk to strangers, especially not about his feelings. After hearing Cam insist on him going, he took some time to think about it. Then made the decision to try it, with the intentions of having a reason never to go again.

He set up his appointment and Lydia chose to be his doctor. The first day, she asked him some general questions about what's been going on in his life, and how he felt. Devin shared a limited amount of info, just to see how she'd respond to any of it. In the future, he would only set up two more appointments before calling them off. This was enough time for Lydia to get curious and want to help him more. She just had too many unanswered questions, and genuinely felt that she could try to understand him.

A few days after his last appointment with her, Lydia arrived at his address to bring him a gift. Devin was confused, and upset more than anything. He had never even shared his address with her, or anyone. Lydia apologized for being intruding, but disclaimed that she only wanted to help. He ignored this and told her to leave and never come back. She accepted, setting his gift on the doorstep and getting back into her car.

He went back into his house and deleted all of her contacts from his phone.

It was obvious that she wasn't expecting him to be so offended by her visiting. She felt bad, but Devin felt worse. About half an hour after she left, he opened his front door to see the gift still sitting boxed on the doorstep. He thought about whether he should accept it or not, but he would feel better just to take her gift. Not knowing what to expect, he took it inside and opened it.

It was a pot of beautiful flowers, with a tag tied to it. The tag read, "I went to the garden the other day and got these petunias. I thought I should put a few into a pot and give them to you as a present. Make sure to keep them in a well lit area and water them every day. I hope it can remind you to stay strong and keep going, no matter what you face in life! -Lydia♡"

He didn't want to admit it, but he liked the gift, and soon placed the flower in his windowsill. It didn't remind him to stay strong, though. It reminded him of her. Over time, he started to like the plant more and more. He'd water it every day and care for it more than he ever cared for anything. It was now his most prized possession. His diligence to care for the plant reflected on his hope to someday see Lydia again. She was no longer Doctor Powers in his mind. But it was a solemn thought.

No one as pure as Lydia could ever love something like him, whose life was just as messed up as it could get. For Devin, there was no salvation or saving. The flower was like a light in his world of infinite darkness. It really was a gift.
