Devin Old Backstory
Here is a documentation of Devin's backstory going from May 2021 to June 2022.
Serpentine Deception
Devin didn't take being dumped well. It was his first girlfriend and she'd already left him. Despondent thoughts swirled through his head.
"I thought she loved me..."
"Why would she do this to me?"
"I should never have shown her that..."
Cameron was, of course, there to comfort Devin. But in the midst of his lament, Emmett approached him.
"Hey. I heard about you and Emily." The entire school had heard about the two breaking up, but neither Emily nor Devin gave any details.
Emmett noticed Devin's potential to be in his crew. He had strength, heartbreak, and appeared to be gullible.
He proceeded to introduce Devin to different ways of "feeling good." First with marijuana, then with cigarettes, it quickly evolved to doing drugs. Emmett encouraged it and praised him for trying new things, all the while pushing Cameron away and spending less and less time with his good friend. Devin began to value bad things rather than good, and it had its consequences on him.
Strong emotions were never a good mix for him. And now that he was putting drugs into his system, it led to catastrophe. His actions were unpredictable and irrational when under any influence, and Emmett approved of it. He'd successfully molded Devin into the terrible person he saw in him.
He got into fights with other students, and although he knew that all humans were weaker than him, he didn't let it stop him. He was driven by frustration and anger, and used drugs and smoking as his fuel.
Devin never told Cam about his newfound pleasure, but Cameron knew just from observing- and smelling him. His appearance went from wearing casual clothes to wearing black and leather, just like Emmett and his group of guys. Even his attitude changed- he pushed down on and threatened everyone around him. This sudden change caught the attention of every senior in the school. Some disliked it, and thought that he should be ashamed for doing such things. But most students had no problem with it- especially not the girls.
Now that he had this dark, hardcore aura, it attracted a lot of girls to him. He took girlfriends of his choice, and many at once. He was satisfied reaping the benefits of his transformation, and had Emmett to thank for it. Cameron remained loyal and unchanging, but did not approve of Devin's new character in any way. It saddened him that he would let someone with such a bad influence affect him, yet fail to be changed by the good influence that Cam had always been providing.
Author's Notes
1.When I thought of this story back in 2021, I never had a reason for Emmett approaching Devin, so I made one in the current moment of re-writing this chapter.
2. In my older notes, Devin has a crush, who, after his dramatic change, is one of the first to approach him and ask him out on a date. Devin asked her out many times before and tried everything to win her heart. She continued to kindly decline him at every step. Devin gave up on trying to impress her and went through his change.
Excerpt from my notes:
"Once he made his transition from the "average kid" to the "bad boy," it attracted his old crush to him. So much so, that she even asked him out one day. His friends scoffed and advised him to ignore her, but Devin had an even better idea, and went on the date with her.
They dated for two weeks. The girl was happy and bragged about him to her friends. Devin treated her nicely with a slick smile on his face, buying her gifts and even kissing her. His friends and all the male students at the school knew how their relationship would end."
To cut it short, Devin took the girl's virginity and then abruptly grew apart from her. He had his eyes on other girls and totally avoided spending time with her as if he'd gotten all that he wanted. Then one day, while at recreation, Devin was sitting at a bench with several popular girls as his girlfriend watched. Then, when he noticed her watching, he instructed the girls to kiss him just as he had planned. When she saw this, she ran into the bathroom crying and Devin followed her to fill her in on the news. He dumped her, and with satisfaction, went back to being single.
