Birthday

"Kai, I'm not sure about this..."

She peeked over the top of the bags of flour and sugar at Dezzy, who was carrying as much frosting as she could. "Whaddya mean?"

"Isn't this a little..." She stared at the pile of bags the small goblin was somehow managing to balance in her arms. "...much?"

"Big cake for big half-orc!" She slammed her shoulder into Star's front door, swinging it open and startling the little leshy who was standing nearby. "It's Alistair's birthday, we have to make it special!"

Star watched as several bags of flour spilled out of her arms, toppling to the ground in a white puff. "Oh dear."

"Alright, alright," Alistair announced, stomping down the stairs and through the kitchen door. "What – "

He stopped short, the words fizzling out. The kitchen was a disaster, globs of flour and sugar and other goop coating every surface. Dezzy was covered in bits of frosting, and Star was scrubbing herself off in the sink.

And there was her greatest creation, the cake, standing taller than Dezzy with at least a dozen layers. The top frosting layer Kai was working on was surprisingly detailed, the bottom layer Dezzy was currently finishing off... less so. It gave the impression of a real cake rising up out of a goopy pile of frosting. Although all of it looked like it had come out of a five-year-old's fever dream.

Kai noticed him standing in the doorway then and hopped off the table, beaming. "Happy birthday!"

He stood there a moment silently regarding her, the cake, and the two leshies collapsed on the table or in the sink. The cake sagged down slightly, but managed to hold itself up.

When he'd sufficiently taken all this in, his eyes fell on her again. "Kai..."

Innocently she smiled. "Do you like it?"

He spent another moment staring before walking over and picking up a knife. Looking at the comparatively tiny tool, then at the cake, he dropped it and drew his glaive. "Let's try it."
