Kai's Memories
Once a small goblin, now something else.
Calling
There’s darkness on the horizon. But it isn’t a storm.
She’s standing high up, looking out over the ocean. Not tall enough to see over the metal slats, too big to fit between them. And something is spreading over the water, gooey and black, rising up out of it. Consuming the ship, consuming everything. Reaching out for her.
And a presence running up behind her, grabbing at her shoulder. A shout leaps to her throat, a memory stored in the echoes. Dad!
She whirls around, but it’s only Alistair. And suddenly she’s herself again.
He shouts something about getting ready before booking it towards the bow that already has black crawling up over it. Dezzy’s running too, her pot abandoned on the deck.
For a moment she stands there still, staring into the writhing void in the ocean. Something is stirring inside her, awakening.
And then she shakes it off and runs to help, letting the half-memory slip. Her friends are in trouble. They need her.
