Tea Break (Preston and Elison)

Preston resisted the urge to look over Elison’s shoulder as the latter scribbled music notes on a sheet of paper that rested haphazardly across his keyboard. He knew that he couldn’t decipher any of it, but he kind of wished he could; maybe it was time to ask Elison to teach him how to read music.

The room was a mess with instruments and papers strewn everywhere the eye could see. Though they were currently enjoying a tea break, it was obvious that they had been busy up until this point. Anyone who looked in here would probably assume that they were frantically rehearsing for a performance that had been scheduled far too late for adequate preparation.

‘Shouldn’t Madeline and Errol be here by now?’ he asked. ‘Feels like we’ve been here for hours already.’

Elison consciously made himself sit up straight, rolling his shoulders to dispel long-ignored tension. ‘You might be forgetting that we started early,’ he replied. ‘It’s only… two PM, and they’re not due to come until at least three.’

‘Oh, right.’ Preston had lost track of time. At work, he tended to watch the clock ooze through hour after hour without incident, every minute feeling like five. When he was doing music, an entire afternoon could slip by with only his more punctual bandmate being aware of it. ‘Well, since we have some extra time to kill, let’s go outside. Stretch our legs. It’s making my back hurt just looking at you.’

Elison chuckled at that before pulling himself into a standing position. The music he’d been composing remained on top of his keyboard, waiting patiently for whenever he decided to resume it. ‘Alright, let’s get some fresh air before the others show up.’
