A collection of very short, generally rough pieces of writing that aren't really long or interesting enough to be considered stories, featuring a variety of different characters.

Some stories may have swearing, non-graphic violence, and things like excessive drinking.

Soul (Armin and Janet)

I leaned over the paper, staring at the softly curving lines of graphite as if I could make the picture come together through force of will alone. It was a drawing of Juliet, or at least, it was meant to be – I still hadn’t grasped the structures of human anatomy or hair. It looked almost like Juliet herself might have drawn it. It was frustrating me almost to tears.

I was aware of Armin coming over to stand behind me, but ignored him until a gentle yet demanding pressure on my scalp forced me to pay attention.

‘That looks good,’ he said, taking a few strands of my hair and beginning to twine them together. It was only then that I realised I hadn’t put my braid in today.

‘You’re just saying that,’ I retorted.

‘Admittedly, I wouldn’t know any better,’ he said. ‘I’m not an artist.’

‘But you still know what a human being looks like, don’t you?’

‘Yes, but isn’t art supposed to be an... expression of creativity? If you wanted it to look exactly like something, then you could just take a photograph.’

I paused to make sense of that. ‘...It should still be recognisable as her.’

‘And it is. I wouldn’t have thought it was anyone else.’

‘But how can you tell who it’s supposed to be?’

The gentle tugging on my hair stopped for a moment, and I felt Armin lean forwards to press a kiss to the back of my head.

‘It has her soul,’ he replied. Then he returned to his self-assigned task, leaving me to muse over what he’d said.
