Candlelight

The sun had set and abandoned the rather warm colored land long ago, replaced with the night that was set in but ever so young still. There were no signs of the sun taking it’s spot high in the sky any time soon, the moon comfortable with its location in the moment. It was one of these rather quiet nights, where only the chirping crickets and other quieter wild animals provided the white noise you came to expect. Only occasionally would the wind chime in to sing along to the melody of night, rustling small bushes and trees to shake the leaves before falling silent once more until it felt the need to contribute it’s voice again.

In the pitch black skies many would stare out to with questions of wonder, it was rather still. Small swirls of just as dark colors were mixed in with the stars, twinkling and sparkling in their high above homes they stuck out of. Of course, there was the pale moon as well, slowly like it usually would do in such dark nights and late times, but it didn’t cast much in the form of light to the land below it.

Out in the open fields of fallen leaves, it was just an endless void of darkness even if the bright colors tried to stick out. Nocturnal creatures dashed around in the dark color, alive with the night and ready to live out their lives. So silent but active, so peaceful but dangerous. But, the fields of darkness was not the area the trio of small ones had taken to gathering. Completely coincidental, but a gathering all the same between strangers.

Past the fields of darkness, the bright lights of the city shined on and almost erased what darkness tried to sink in. Street lamps stood high and tall and glowered warm illuminating light, car headlights pieces what was left of the darkness and lit up the path they were on, window lights that were dimming or lighting up as people went to bed to retire or awakening to enjoy the nightlife. It was after all a busy and bustling city, and the saying ‘the city never sleeps’ wasn’t as untrue as some thought it to be.

In one of the more unlighten areas, a small mostly green frog like dragon scurried away from passing cars that were much bigger than he was. Red and beautiful flowers adored him, and his crown atop his head fit his name so well. Prince Charming, a curious jungle hybrid who had came into the city to see what was everyone celebrating. He had heard of this holiday time, but hadn’t seen one held in the city before. After a few strays tried to gobble him up, he was keeping more to the alleyways he could peer out from.

Not far from the wandering dragon, another more blue in color dragon was lying to look over the pile of books he had found. Sure, Calvero couldn’t see them but he knew they were there. His neck fluff hid his from legs that were resting on the pages as he still tried though. He sat on one of the crates that was near the pile of books, murmuring to himself how he wished these dark paths also had lights like the streets they connected.

And finally, the hen sized cat dragon was hopping around. Kiwi was always the curious sort and now having her own collar she was let out often to see what was out in the world. Many were kind to her so she had little fears but a lot of common sense. A bag was strapped to her side as she hopped along, chasing rats that came from garbage cans and bugs, along with the occasional smaller cats.

Peeping as she hopped alone, she stopped as her big eyes settled on the blue colors, head turning as she went over to meet the blue dragon who was absorbed in the books he couldn’t see. Even her soft cooing didn’t earn her any attention at first. It wasn’t until Prince charming joined that both jumped, surprised by the third person. Calvero jumped again as he realized he wasn’t alone before even that. All were curious of the books though, but the issue of no light was a huge problem.

Thinking it over for a moment, Kiwi made soft mrowing noises and pigeon noises as she though, eventually nessling down so her feet were hidden under her round body as she thought. The other two males had no bag go search through, so she figured it was mostly up to her. Her ears perked as she thought of something, pulling out a partially used candle and it's holder. SHe was pleased by her memory and thoughtfulness to bring it along, but then came the issue of how to light it. Another issue solved as Prince Charming stared at it for a moment, tried to eat it and realized it was not as tasty as it smelled, and then let out a small puff of fire from his mouth that set the candle ablaze.

Excited by the new light source, Calvero made space for the other two as he turned back to the front page. It was just picture books, but the pictures were always nice to look at in the late nights. Curling up together, he used his small hands to turn the pages, the three of them enjoying their late night gathering even if no names were ever shared. It was just a peaceful and nice night as far as they cared.
