What are your trademark character archetypes?

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago (Edited 5 years, 6 months ago) by hedgemaze

This was a conversation my friends and I were having earlier about our characters: everyone has certain character archetypes they're a sucker for-- or maybe ones that they can't help but keep making. What's your poison?

You can interpret this generally: maybe archetypes like "jerks with a heart of gold", personality traits like "smug", storylines like "friends who fall in love", whatever types of characters you love to see or create!

My characters:
a) idiots but they try
b) feelings are hard let's never talk about them
c) conflict resolution is hard let's never talk about it

I have types, I make characters outside of them but my favorites always seem to follow one of them XD

  • Intelligent, snobby and grumpy but actually a cutie/awkward. Or some mix therein.
  • Bookish, well read.
  • Strong women. Strong men too but mostly women.
  • Red haired women and blue or black haired men.
  • Some sort of animal form, theme or otherwise.
  • Some sort of elemental theme.
  • Well dressed/formal. Usually snobs too.
  • Sad, emotionally scarred, angry, bitter or otherwise so their paRTNER CAN FIX THEM/MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER.

As a contrast I struggle to enjoy cute, happy and upbeat characters if they don't have something else going for them. Not saying I like all my characters miserable, but I love making them happy with their stories so often they start out unhappy or grumpy. There's just less fun in it for me if they're already happy. Though I do have some couples that are paired that both halves are happy, they just have a lot of drama around them instead XD

AlwaysGradient
  • Cinnanrolls that have been through a whole lot of traumatised stuff
  • people who don't know how to emotion
  • people who spend way to much time on the internet

I probably have like four default personalities:

- Cheerful, upbeat and optimistic

- Smug, mean and a bit manipulative

- Quiet loners, either stoic or shy

- Capable and seemingly perfect, bitter inside

Mixed in with some insecurities and tragic backstories yayyy (also the 'Bi The Way' trope probably applies to most of my OCs, I'm biased XD)

I tend to make...

  • girls who have their shit together mostly, but under the surface, have a few issues
  • boys who are so mad. they're so mad.
  • sad backstories. aaaaaaaall the sad backstories.

Oh uhhh my tropes are probably just characters who are sweet, and so kind hearted but also dumb as hell in an endearing way. I am a total sucker with it.

That and people who pose as egotists who only care about themselves, but really only because they care too much, and can't handle that.

Tremor CallmeKomodo

Big scary monsters who are actually really sweet and friendly!

  • dictators/rulers/rich assholes/etc with a power imbalance relationship... like every second couple i make is like this
  • geniuses in their fields/prodigies
  • power couples that ended up loving each other
  • my female characters tend to be badass lesbians
  • REALLY TALL CHARACTERS... the average height in numbers is like seven foot something last time i averaged
  • poly couples/groups, with a ton of people (10+)
  • "nobody else knows why we're together but we're together bc it works for us"
  • very few of my characters have had exes/past relationships
  • and of course.... gods/reality warpers, that's like, a good 70% of my ocs

  • resistance fighters who become disillusioned with their own cause
  • scientists with an almost child-like fascination for the world
  • evil individuals with an underlying inferiority complex

Twins.. definitely twins.

Not the identical hive mind type though. I'm more into the opposite twins type. It's satisfying reflecting them off of eachother. :J
