What are your trademark character archetypes?

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago (Edited 5 years, 6 months ago) by hedgemaze

This was a conversation my friends and I were having earlier about our characters: everyone has certain character archetypes they're a sucker for-- or maybe ones that they can't help but keep making. What's your poison?

You can interpret this generally: maybe archetypes like "jerks with a heart of gold", personality traits like "smug", storylines like "friends who fall in love", whatever types of characters you love to see or create!

My characters:
a) idiots but they try
b) feelings are hard let's never talk about them
c) conflict resolution is hard let's never talk about it

I tend towards developing characters that are basically nothing too special in the worlds they're a part of--just regular people dealing with their own issues as opposed to legendary heroes and villains. As for archetypes (which kind of ties into this), my most potent would probably be...

  • Perky, free-spirited thrill-seekers
  • Cool-headed, calculative strategists
  • Sarcastic, self-centered assholes
I try to give my characters as much nuance and variety as possible, but even with that in mind, you'd probably be able to fit most of them into one or more of these three categories (to varying degrees depending on the character).
xavier

Monsters

aaawhyme

- typically buff creeps/horrible and perverted asshats, that are power hungry

- typically buff creeps/horrible and perverted asshats, that are power hungry but come across a bigger perverted asshat who shows them whose boss

- baddies turned good/doing good deeds (maybe they dont wanna do the good deed but "HMPH FINEE") // alternatively, baddies being good for only one specific person(s) but no one else

- powerful beings being confined in someway, by a lesser powerful being >_>

- baddies getting whats coming to them/ what they deserve

- lots of fear and angst. so much angst

- cute innocent beings being TOTALLY MONSTROUS HORRIFIC MONSTERS in a sweet innocent way :)

Oh, one thing I noticed but I'm not sure I do anymore: my angrier characters generally have short hair while my calmer characters generally have long hair (if they're human).

I'm also a sucker for characters who are overly protective of their loved ones--- I have a ton of them, and even if it isn't an explicit character trait I always somehow sneak it in there. I'm terrible.

also i cant draw muscles so i just. die

SonieTheDog

Oof. Mine is usually "social outcast but they go on a cool magic adventure so it doesn't matter" or "I wanted to die but something cool happened and now I don't want to anymore".

Sometimes it's a mix of both. I think it's partly how I feel about myself XD I'd love to go on a magical adventure!

Edit: there's also "my parents are dead but that doesn't matter because they wouldn't be important anyways"

Kenmai

*anxious, shy boys
*who also happen to be really short/cute looking

Taebasco

I tend to stick to negative personality traits OTL

- Narcissistic/Vanity

-Jerk/Asshole/Sassy/Diva

-Uncomfortably creepy/unsettling

-Tends to judge others often/ talks to people like they are trash.

-Uhhhh alot of monsters/demons/ fantasy species.

A lot of mine are accidental but:

  • Someone who's dedicated their entire life to their profession, and probably collect something related to it
  • Friends to lovers, but refusing to acknowledge each other as lovers. One person probably dragged the other into their fucked up life
  • Really aggressive rabbits
  • playing an instrument in high school
  • non-human celebrities
  • Asexual and/or Aromantic characters (then again I'm aro/ace so)
  • acts overconfident and/or self-absorbed, but actually a nervous wreck
  • glasses. tuxedos/suits. tuxedos/suits and glasses
  • Smarter than they look/act
  • non-humans interacting with humans
