Ask the person above OOC about their character!

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago (Edited 5 months, 17 days ago) by Luke (CHIEF) hedgemaze

There's a thread for asking IC questions to the character above, but I am a sucker for all dem sweet, sweet character development tidbits, so if you're like me and you've ever wondered what inspired someone to make their characters, here is the thread for you.

Post IC (but don't actually write IC) as the character you want the person below you to ask you a question about, or you can let them ask about any of your characters (or a certain group of characters)! Ask any question OOC to the above character's owner, like perhaps what inspired a certain design choice, what gave them the idea for the character in the first place, what aspect of their character they struggled most in writing, or if the character has changed significantly over time. Anything you want, really (it doesn't have to be a character development question: it can be any OOC question about the character, or a group of them). Claim first if you need time to look through their characters or read their profile(s). And after you've been asked a question, edit your post with your answer.

Rules:

  • Please try to ask an interesting question!
  • Nothing too sensitive here, please. If you must post something sensitive, use a spoiler cut or make the text and highlight color the same. There is another thread for NSFW questions.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • BE NICE!

I'll start us off with this guy. Have fun!

Edit: my answer

So Luke and the other two terrorists were inspired by an incident when my friend and I were in high school, and running around the neighborhood like the teenage idiots we were, wearing all the Halloween costume items from my basement that we could manage: among them, a Christmas reindeer antler headband and a child's toy fireman helmet. A guy yelled out of the window of his pickup truck that terrorists like us are what America stands against... which was an insane thing to yell at teenagers in stupid costumes, but it made me think, what if I played that guy straight and he was right?

Heto hedgemaze

Did Lark have a favorite player he tried to emulate when he was young? (Or, did you base him on any particular player?) How did he get into baseball as a kid; did anyone else in his family play?

I remember all of my characters' origins, even when they're much older than him, haha! but heh, Heto-- he was originally my first dog in a browser dog game called Furry Paws, and I used him for years as my avatar in pet games. (There's a TH page for his dog form here.) Later I made human versions of a bunch of my animal characters, and Heto was in my 2007 comic, as basically the same character he is now.

He went from a rowdy but friendly sled dog to a wild and independent teen; I made him an artist to hang out in the artists' squat along with Luke (wolf-- so naturally he became Heto's big brother figure) and Bane, who were also created in 2003, and Kaji and Lance, other old characters. Among design bits, I gave him my own childhood camping backpack, and the collar he found in the road is because I did the same thing in middle school, lol.

I'm very fond of this kid. A good boy.

hedgemaze Do you remember where you got the inspiration for Heto? What was your process creating him? Seeing as you made him so long ago :o

-softer metals are easier to manipulate, but beyond that no.

-he discovered it around the same time as his peers, but it took him a few years to realize what fine control he could have

-i don’t know enough about armor to say but he probably does have a lot of opinions about armor and what his favorite styles are!

animalchorus pinging since it's been a while!

i'm curious, are there any kinds of metal that are easier/hardier to manipulate? how/when did he discover he had that ability? also, does he have any particular favorite style(s) of armor?

Corentine Serotina

What makes him so distrustful of others? Is it just how he is, or did something happen that made him that way?

"Wears gloves to avoid questions about his hands" Well now I have to ask. What's the story there?

This is a bit of a weird question, based on the wiki for the "Speckled Band." Which snake, in your mind, is the canon one your Sherlock faced up against?

I understand why his animal motif would be bloodhounds, but why shoebills?

Two of the NPCs referenced on her profile are involved in that first story. Director Pine - Corentine's former professor and now boss at the Dwellas Academy library - and Kaszu - fellow graduate researcher. Kaszu had a theory that the "Elder Race" mentioned in many of the world creation myths were real. That despite no bones, no homes or bodies, and despite them having no consistent physical description, they were real and walked the world. And that in fact, they were the likely basis for 'demon' mythology. But Kaszu couldn't read Hadozee. So he asked for Director Pine's help. And Professor Pine called in Corentine! She'd studied dead languages as her minor, and had kept up her skills with the occasional read-through of things.

She found two books, translated as: “The Legacy of the Elder Race” and “Meditations on the End of Days.” Here's a direct quote from the notes I keep on the campaign:

"According to this book the Hadozee did not originate on this world directly, but were - the translation is a little shaky - brought here or created here by some type of more powerful, older race of beings. These entities are variously described as being beautiful and terrifying. But they disappeared at some point. The legend - which obviously encompasses 100s if not 1000s of years - says these beings worked with the Hadozee to create great cities, masterful art and incredible magic. But at some point they left. The text is not clear on whether they disappeared or abandoned us, but the author of the book seems rather upset about it. But supposedly this elder race is fated to return at some point. The word most closely translates to “unshackled” or “released.” They will restore their glory to the world."

And the second book: "From the visual characteristics of it the book appears to have been made around the same time. Though it is not the same author, and it refers to points in the future after the elder race has returned. // This tells a story of great destruction. A terrible evil will rise out from the waters between the many islands of the world. And with it will come tsunamis and other storms that will consume the land. The ocean will rise up, and at the moment that all seems lost the Elder Race will return and take us back to their homeworld, where we will be safe."

Corrie gave that info to Kaszu and Professor Pine, which was a literal transcription of the book that took several hours to make. Kaszu then showed up at her house a few days later, insisting they were on the brink of greatness. He was right, he just knows it, but he's missing something. Maybe something to do with the phrase" unshackled," he keeps coming back to that word. They talked for a bit and he left, but he'd convinced Corentine to go back. Corentine was looking for any way to summon a demon. Even if she didn't believe it was possible, she was going to try. She found an old Naush story(another dead language) about "a horned fellow with red skin and short of stature. He liked to tell tall tales and play pranks, but he knew more about ship building than anyone else on the crew. The myth goes that one night the crew was caught up in a terrible storm. Visibility went to zero. And the little imp jumped into the ocean, picked up the boat, and carried it safely to shore." She did try to make a storm (Tempest Cleric) but nothing happened, she just got rained on. So she looked for specifically summoning magic

She decided to go through the deepest section of the library - the Hall of the Damned. Where the oldest, most powerful books reside....as well as a bunch of cursed books. She finds an old unfinished spellbook and starts going through that. "She flips through it idly, looking for something to catch her attention. And eventually her gaze rests on a page she can best translate as saying “recall.” It’s a word she can scarcely pronounce that transports the caster as well as their companions to a sanctuary outside of time and space, and can also return them to said location. This book appears to have been written in by its former owner. It’s very difficult to see, but when the candlelight catches the pages in the right way she can see notes on the pages. “A place where no harm can come to us, or to our wards? Seems promising. Will test tomorrow.”"

Because there were no notes after this she wondered if she should try to 'recall' this person from that place. It was her day off, but she couldn't get it out of her head so she went back to the woods to make another storm - because she'd definitely made the connection between demons and storms. But this time she performed the spell. "She heads back to the clearing she performed the storm at, and conjures up another storm, but this time she performs the recall spell in the midst of the storm. She speaks the word in an unfamiliar language, and then out of the swirling storm there emerges lightning, which is not something she can cast. It slowly snakes its way to the ground, moving in a liquid viscous manner unlike any way she’s seen lightning magic move before. And when it makes contact with the ground it shatters into tiny glittery sparks that take the form of a man. But not a man like any of which she’s seen before."

And boom! Kel'grokon! She's freaking out because she was expecting to just get rained on and go home, and he's just staring at the sky in confusion. Because he's been gone 10k years, and none of the stars are in the right place. He had to use a translation spell to even understand her, as he remembers Hadozee which is a dead language. She has to sneak him to the library - which used to be his research lab, apparently, and get him a disguise spell. Then she has to tell Kaszu, and Professor Pine. Because she has a demon now, what does she do with him? They decide to keep his discovery secret and she gives Kel a handmade book for him to write down the details he needs to remember about modern society. Because while he's alone now, she wants to think his people will come back, and they'll need that info to reintegrate into the world.

So that's that!

~

Something unforgivable to her is harming people she cares about. The cult was formerly seen as 'misguided individuals,' and she was hoping they could all turn around and come back to normal. Hedgehog did! And while he'd only been a member of them for a couple of weeks, she still had hope for the other members too. After they attack the library and terrorize the researchers and royals gathered for the conference, they crossed the line for her.

Kidnapping her didn't hurt others, and they didn't try to hurt her either. Just wanted to get Kel's attention. But then coming and 1. Interrupting her work and research, and 2. Kidnapping people just there to hear about magical discoveries really upset her. They're no longer at a point where she thinks they can be fixed, and instead she just wants them gone. If that means they're killed by the royals, so be it. She only stopped Kel from killing the leader of the library attack so he could be interrogated.

Lenore FellowPigeon

I'm super curious to know more about how Corentine met/rediscovered Kel. What kind of research was she doing, and did she mean to summon a demon? She also seems like a very sweet character who likes to help others but he flaws mention being unwavering in her hatred towards her enemies. What in her mind qualifies as unforgivable?

Coming up with the ideas for what books she'd write was one of my favourite parts of creating Lenore so it's cool to hear that other people like them! By far Lenore's favourite, or at least the one she's poured the most of herself into is the Adventures of Joanna Epitaph. It gets published as a serial in a fiction magazine, chapter by chapter and has been running for years at this point. It was one of the first big projects she took on as a solo writer and it's become the series she's most well-known for too. Its success is probably one of the reasons Rosecrow hasn't fired her already. Lenore was also a PC in a game I played and during the last session, she finally finished the story. After years of building up to the finale and nearly destroying the whole city in her research, Lenore wrote the perfect ending and her magnum opus. She folded the papers into an envelope and sent the only copy to Rosamund, along with a match and a note saying to burn it.

As for what her biggest fear is it's a bit complicated. She's not immune to fear or anything, it can still absolutely affect her, she just largely finds it exciting. Even when in very real danger she often sees situations as almost detached and herself as less of a person and more as part of a complex narrative. To her it's fascinating and a source of inspiration. That said I think the thing that she could be considered afraid of, even if she won't admit it, is meaninglessness and wasting the time she has. She often feels as though her own doom is around the corner and so every moment needs to be completely invested in achieving something. She's also pretty wary nowadays about letting people get too close to her, especially non-ministry folk.

Reading thru her notable books, i must say they sound fuckin sick. Sounds like stuff i'd personally read dskjfh. Out of those which one is her personal favorite and why? And since she's so into the concept of fear. Whats her biggest fear?

damian l3ftpale_

i’m curious as to what inspired him? like which characters or people inspired him aesthetic wise or personality wise?

v

yeah they did, even though he was an infant when his mother ran away and left him, he still always had a weird sense of emptiness, even though he loves his dad and he managed to take on both roles, damian was still somewhat empty. damian also  noticed his dad having a melancholy energy ever since he was a child. victor (his father) had severe depression and anxiety and he suffered from alcoholism all in the first few years of his life. sometimes he did catch victor crying as a small child (4-7) and ask what’s wrong and he would just say “it’s nothing to worry about.” so this also affected damian and broke his heart, he hates to see his dad upset and always tries to make his dad smile. when he was a kid he went with undiagnosed adhd for a bit so he was kind of bullied in elementary school and called annoying all of the time by other kids since he was kind of loud and awkward. he kept repeating things and asking the same question for no reason, and would fidget in his seat a lot and would forget things taught in class.

as for the internet part. sometimes he was harassed for his emo outfits as a young teen and i imagine he was also talking to like people 18+ when he was 13. sometimes strangers would text him about his dad and asking really personal questions because his dad was a famous musician.

Neroli IronyMobile

In a more charged series of questions:

Did any of the events in Damian's life impact him long-term? Did he run into any complications while online (Tumblr not being the most uncombative site)?

I think her relationship with her parents was not impersonal, but was more detached than it might be considered in other situations — the ocean vast and dangerous typically. As she got older and developed more, this shifted to more consideration, which was recognised by her, but not thought much about overall.

She traveled often before resulting at Verona, going from Indonesia to China, and other places with coastal lines.

Her favourite location would have to be a number of minute islands and otherwise reefs; although inland, the vibrancy of markets (Spanish/related markets are notable) draws her attention.

 Delores bloodstained

What's her relationship with her parents like (if she still is in contact with them)? How frequently did she travel before staying in Verona, and what's her favorite location that she's been to?

1. I was inspired by analog horror, lost media (mostly shitty lost media creepypastas i read as a middle schooler but a teeny bit from actual lost media searches), game shows (obv), and a whole lot of other shit but outside of her concept her character is inspired by SCP 024, SCP 2030, anddd various game show hosts, horror movie characters etc.

2. For the most part it was because it was her first experience showing herself to people, he cannot shapeshift but his mask is a special case. Prior to the 60s she had no false face and in order to freak viewers out less he decided to just not show his face. Outside of any extremely rare moments where she blew her lid her face remained blank. It wasn't until the invention of the smiley face where she was like 'wow that's literally me!' and also gained more confidence. There's probably canonically a moment where she fucked up and accidentally showed her face though. lol

3. Nope! Her birthplace / Studio 74 is very sensitive to specifically old communication technology (im going to shorten this so its not 70 billion paragraphs long but tl;dr most supernatural beings can communicate or at least mess with communication technology, analog being the most manipulable. delores is really really powerful with this and will sometimes interrupt other supernatural beings trying to communicate) S74 in itself puts out signals all the time creating interruptions randomly in random places (these create unintelligible messages though completely stopped once she began utilizing the signals for her silly show). The one time Delores decides to look outside during one of these she discovers the telegraph and it snowballs from there. i hope that made sense lol.

4. Both actually. She fucking hates when they do not participate, and are rude. Warren is a triple threat (he's always been an ass) but he is a verryyyy special case and his little beef with Delores actually begins with his father. He never learned to keep his nose out of where it doesn't belong so unfortunately it's a lifetime subscription to petty (in Delores' terms) harassment. In general Delores has a bad temper and literally looking at him can spike it sometimes. Other than him, in normal instances you'd at least get like a couple chances to play along or fix your attitude before she just ends you and sends you home to watch yourself die.

5. That silly little New Mexico resident implied they knew who one of Delores' friends really was and had intent to harm them (and was generally uncooperative and rude and annoying). She has like 2 friends max and cares very very deeply about them so they got a 2 for 1 special of 'death' on air and death in real life. Delores gives off gamma radiation passively when outside of S74, when chilled out and normal it's not enough to kill someone but when fuming mad its such a large amount it will kill someone in at most 3-4 days.
For the most part, interviews with her are super pleasant and rarely ever annoying to her. When they are, it's never really enough to get her 'im going to FUCKING get you' mad and she'll just disconnect

dw about asking a bunch of questions i love talking about her lol. gawd dayum this was long

The Continuum. AKA Connie. Edge_Goldie

Sorry there’s quite a few questions, Delores is so intriguing!

First off, what inspired you to make such a character?
Why wouldn’t he show himself when Your Call first start on TV/first incarnation? Was she born alongside technology? Does refusing to play along (like what Warren did) piss her off real bad, or is Warren just a special case of hatred beyond belief? What was up with the seemingly unrelated New Mexico contestant with the radiation poisoning- her blowing off steam from an interview?

——————

!!!!! Thank you!! :)

Her shapeshifting is.. finicky. In regards to her height that’s always changing- but not exactly noticeable. She will be changing her height in front of you- and when you’re not looking. When it’s not noticeable it’s because she’s consciously doing it- to either appear more friendly, intimidating, cute, etc. Basically changing to what she feels or needs in the moment.
When it’s noticeable (drastic changes in height basically) she’s either pissed off, grieving, or her body is spiraling out of control in the moment.

Though in general, most of the time she chooses one form to stay in while talking to someone. Though for those she’s closer to she will flow into different forms. Especially if she needs an added limb or to be paper smooth to do something. Though it can also change on her emotional reactions. Yet she never lets anyone see her changing into or back from her ‘human’ form. Often forcing it to be instant, blink of an eye change even though she’s changing into it like clothes, instead of more fluid-like (which she prefers). So all of the above, I suppose?

Forgot to add- she changes her face differently. She sets it to a certain set of features and it stays that way. No amount of emotion or her body being difficult will change it until she wants to change it.

Tonantzintla zinnia

Edge_Goldie (as its been a while!)

unrelated to any questions but connie's character concept is so cool!!

with her height constantly changing, how does it work? i guess this applies to her general form changing as well - but is it something like it changes in front of you, every time you look away and back, or something else entirely?

Apepi PSYCHOGRAM

the design is so cool, it reminds me of a certain pokemon? Is it inspired by it

Answers for my questions :3!!

> His most prized treasure is a golden crown he had taken after the royal family had died, he was so interested in it that he payed a fortune for it from someone who had actually stolen it.

> Design wise, he has a few bits and pieces, the circular pattern on his coat was inspired by rayquaza from pokemon, and the "jabberwocky" form is inspired by.. well the Jabberwocky from The Alice in Wonderland film, hence the wyvern shape.

> The form is around 40 feet long (including tail) and 19 ft tall
