Mercy

Magic builds within her, sharpening to a point. Fire, forbidden witchcraft, a spear of flames to pierce his wretched heart. The words of power lash against her tongue and she prepares to do what the others can't.

"Varah forgive me." She only has a moment to register the whisper behind her.

And then starlight explodes before her eyes.

The bony old dragon can't stand against this. He gives a shudder before collapsing on the floor, a hoarse whisper of thanks escaping his smoldering body before he falls silent. A mercy he didn't deserve.

Vela too stands there unsteadily before falling back onto the floor. It's not the most shaken she's been; whatever went on in the witch's house affected her worse. She wouldn't have done this if she hadn't felt she needed to. But she still looks rattled.

The magic building in Cas dissipates, the unspoken words dying in her throat. He didn't deserve it. A quick way out after everything he's done to this world, forcing someone else to take up the burden of spilling his blood on their paws.

Vela was the one who had wanted to kill him. If it had been up to Cas, he could have thrown himself off the tower for all she cared. But she should have known the cleric would choose mercy, even for such a being as him, and done it herself. She wouldn't have lost any sleep over it.

But she hesitated. And now it's done.

Kadoren walks up behind her, placing a gentle paw on Vela's shoulder as she tears her eyes away from the mangled body of her doing.

She can't offer such comfort. If anything, her cold words as she strides past them are the opposite.

But she makes a silent promise. Next time, it won't be Vela. And it won't be Kadoren either. The one to carry such burdens should be her.
