Personality
"There's a lot to learn in this world. Who to trust, who to put your faith in. Ah, yeah, all my faith is on you lot, of course."

Kougami is tired, exhausted, yet honest and deeply caring middle aged man who seems to meld in with humans more than the Voids. He acts like the typical human would, as he has the experience of living in the human realm for a bit over a decade under his belt. His phobias, likes, dislikes, and anxieties illustrate how in tune he has become with humanity. He has a somewhat cynical view on humanity however, and believes that some people, namely people with fully developed minds like him or Tsujino, are not as truthful as they try to front otherwise, and dislikes liars. Most of this stems from the atrocities of the Lab Committee, and can tend to assume that others can easily commit just as brutal acts, though he himself admits this is a defense mechanism that he still needs to break out of. Despite it all, Tsujino's dedication for helping Voids and Kougami himself gain a safe haven has given him hope in the world, and knows that the world will always have its ups and downs, and will always try to give the benefit of the doubt. He ultimately believes that participating in the human realm's activities has made him a better person, and is thankful to leave the survivalist dimension of the Hollow Night and the abuse of the Lab Committee behind. It was this that led him on to becoming a teacher (and also they both could use the money...) and tries to teach all his students good morals within his lessons, believing that they are the hope and defining factor of whether another crime against humanity should occur. Though his introverted nature is very noticable with every interaction he has, even with his students, he always pushes hope and introspective advice to them, and only wants others to be their most honest self; even Tsujino gets a taste of this side of him.

While he is fine with his solitary life, it suits his more quiet and stoic nature well, he does desire to maybe, just maybe, be outside for longer than a train ride to his school and back home. He knows that Tsujino fears being caught and interrogated, and respects this (and the last thing he would do is force the one who saved him to do anything, especially for protection,) but a part of him knows she doesn't like living this way and wants to spend time with her...ACTUALLY experiencing the outside world. Since the Lab Committee has gone bankrupt and out of commission in Japan, maybe they can finally breathe and actually do something more inticing, rather than just being sheltered middle aged geeks with a monotonous life. Heaven knows they are in deep need of social interaction. He waits patiently though, for Tsujino to be honest with herself, and helps her to finally admit to what she wants...

  • His pasttime activities are: blogging (and sucking at it,) collecting holiday cards, pottery, finishing jigsaw puzzles, roasting coffee, embroidery, doing pen tricks, and leaving reviews for restaurants he has, in fact, never been to.
  • His favorite holiday is Christmas, especially when Tsujino stops living as a recluse. They get to actually decorate the house!
  • His EXS ability allows him to form a hanbō. He tends to use this as a pointing staff in his classes.
  • Kougami has a lot of human-oriented fears. Those fears are roaches, dark rooms, loved ones falling ill, and needles.
  • Kougami had to learn driving impromptu for a field trip. He is decent at it, but preferably would like to not drive. He keeps finding himself in such positions though.
  • His guilty pleasure is to search up people he knows for the hell of it.
  • He likes when Tsujino asks to kiss him, since he has to bend down a little to her so she can...For some reason, doing that in specific makes him happy.
  • Very weak to Tsujino's teasing and flirty advances. She might be neurotic, but she always likes to be the one in the lead. ♡

Scissors

Whenever she manifests her human form through Nao's hair, she always seems to form a pair of scissors in her hand along with it, despite it having no actual use. Surely that must mean something...?

Backstory

Wakabayashi was a man born and raised in Aomori, living a life of simplicity before his death. He worked at the Samidare Daycare and was an activity leader. He was adored by the children and many of them tried to seek a teacher's pet kind of approval. Single mothers, fathers, and co workers were charmed by his ability to connect with kids, and would constantly try to seek him out for a date, or suggest a friend of theirs as a candidate; all of these were followed by rejection, never finding anyone to be appealing enough for a long term relationship. Regardless, he had a mundane but fulfilling life that he enjoyed, having many friends to be around, despite his more tired nature. Wakabayashi was an everyday good guy.

Unfortunately, he would meet his demise after staying for overtime at work. He and a few co-workers were caught up planning an end of the year festival for the children, and all of them went home relatively late, clocking out around 8:00 PM. Wakabayashi gets caught in a Hollow Night while getting supplies, and was cornered and bitten numerous times by several Voids of different types. He tried desperately to claw through the insanity, but he was quickly overpowered once he felt control. The last thing he did before corrupting was throwing up profusely. There he laid on the sidewalk, wide-eyed as he slowly felt his existence being ripped away from him as hard as he tried to keep it together. A combination of blood and vomit surrounded him, until his body was no more. After his corruption, his mother and father would file a missing person report after several missed calls, marking it unusual for Wakabayashi. All the co-workers, the children, and management of Samidare Daycare would live in false hopes, assuming that he would eventually be found by law enforcement. Little do they know, Wakabayashi no longer exists in their realm, now a Void roaming around searching for purpose. The Wakabayashi they knew is gone.

With only his first name tied to his non existent memories, Kougami roamed to find the reasoning for this realm's purpose, and the purpose as to why he can think so eloquently, why he can feel the emotions that he feels, and the meaning for the form he takes. He would get caught by the Aomori Lab Committee, all whom were obsessed and interested in this new type of Void; a Void with humanity would surely advance the genetic research of their kind. He was used and essentially forced into submission into being subject to experiments to discover ways to weaken Voids cost-efficently for the Mass Eradication Project. Kougami has some scarring on his legs from these events.

Kougami is eventually put into the hands of Nagi Tsujino, a neurotic but studious geneticist with around 2 years of experience. She was instructed to calm him down with the serums available, as he was allegedly acting too hostile. Nagi naturally agreed to the order, but upon close inspection, she saw bits of scarring peeking from his messed up clothing. She questioned it, and Kougami spoke, "This is what you all have done to me. You all try again and again to tear my vessel, bit by bit." Nagi was appalled, angered and upset that she had been so left in the dark about the Experiment Phase Branch. She responded, "You need to get out of here. I-I need to get you out. Look at how hurt you are. All these scars..." Kougami, surprised that Nagi could hear him first and foremost, was skeptical if this was a trick for Tsujino's ulterior motives. After Nagi poured out her heart, he gave her the benefit of the doubt after seeing her breakdown over how foolish she felt. She slit the top of her head and let herself bleed all over her scalp to lure Kougami to attach to it with its raw EXS, and then sealed him with the "EXS Taming Wax." They proceeded to defect and escape the Aomori lab, security and researchers hot on her tail.

Once she lost them on the train station, she went home and hastily packed everything. "Everything is going to change now, so p-please don't be alarmed. We-we have to get out of here and move." Kougami responded with a gentle "I understand." Thus, they moved all around Japan for ten years, eventually settling in Kanzakai, a relatively small city that was perfect for hiding. Kougami eventually became a teacher for Iroha Academy, seeing no harm in it. It is a dual middle school-high school building, and he now teaches Japanese and English. The more he works there, the more he does yearn for the idea of getting out of hiding...

Relationships
"(These lot are all pretty nice, huh...Never really realized that.)"

friends

"I feel like he just wants someone to really understand what he's saying. I can feel that, personally, used to be the same way."

Ouka seems to confide in Kougami the most since he's the most "average" of the Voids, which Kougami admittedly appreciates. Kougami lets his more cynical guard down, as he likes to make sure Ouka isn't nervous to talk to him like a close friend. Their conversations are average, if not occasionally vulnerable, and the both care about each other deeply. Kougami is interested in hanging out with Ouka much more in the forseeable future; if only he can properly manage his schedule to do so...

acquainted

"(The hell is his deal...Guess Hotaru wasn't kidding when he said the other Voids are "different"...Haha. That was putting it lightly, huh.)

Kougami is constantly perplexed by Hitoki's behavior, and how he can easily go from being unbearably stubborn to emotional and actually kind of smart. It intrigues him enough, but Hitoki's disagreeable nature whenever he can't calm himself can only be tolerated but so much by a man already working bare minimum wage. It's a good thing Kougami didn't see him when he was first manifested, he's more normal the way he is now, believe it or not. They speak every now and again, and Kougami often brings up Hotaru in those conversations, as he seems to talk about Hitoki and Nodoka in high spirits.

Nao

???

"No! No more dancing! No more singing! Help me!"

They cooperate enough to live. Furumaki's cautious mindset contrasts hard with Nao's obnoxious and impulsive attitude. However, both do have tunnel vision. That's one thing in common, I suppose.

acquainted

"You too, you also roam aimlessly..."

They are not on friendly terms, nor are they really that acquainted, but they act so similar enough and have similar feelings that their interactions are usually in a pleasant, formal manner.
