Will is the keeper of the Holy Scythe, and the sole guardian of Purgatory. As the Gatekeeper, he manages the lost souls, helping them find their way to Heaven, and being a shoulder for grieving souls to cry on. Despite his very serious job and his reputation as the Grim Reaper himself, Will is a very upbeat individual who’s always seen smiling. He has a very positive outlook on death, which can rub off on the otherwise miserable spirits that travel with him. While he is only one person, his comforting presence can be felt all throughout the realm of Purgatory. This is because his Grace is dispersed through violet flames that gently drift throughout Purgatory and accompany the lost souls.
Born only a few years after the birth of Christ, Will spent most of his mortal life as a mischievous and mean-spirited farm boy. His daily activities involved thieving from and mocking Christ’s followers, as well as spreading nasty rumors about Jesus himself. Will was hated amongst the community, but Christ was always one to forgive.
Then, on the day that Jesus was set to be crucified, the despicable Will was also scheduled to be executed. Nailed to a cross beside the "King of the Jews," the man repented his actions through his tears, begging for forgiveness from The Lord. Will’s confessions and regrets had touched Christ, who then assured that Will would not be spending his afterlife in Hell. However, those words also reached the Archangel of Reward & Punishment, St. Jegudiel. Jegudiel, not one to go against the word of Christ, placed Will’s soul in Purgatory, giving him a scythe and a pair of golden wings. Will was blessed with the status of Purgatory’s Gatekeeper, spending the rest of his eternal life as the one to guide lost souls to the sacred realm that he himself may never enter. However, while Will saw his new purpose as a reward from Jegudiel, the very wings he was given slowly deteriorated, losing flesh and feathers and being reduced to skeletal appendages.
While Peter treats Will as more of a coworker than anything, Will considers himself and Peter to be the best of friends. He will sometimes try to get Peter to come to Earth for fun activities, unaware how high-maintenance Peter’s job is.
Will and Cerberus’s relationship is bizarre. One moment Will has his scythe at Cerberus’s throats to protect a lost soul from the demon’s clutches, the next moment the two Gatekeepers are bonding together during outings on Earth.
Phil often gets sent to Purgatory after many of his deaths. Will enjoys Phil’s visits, and the two of them sometimes have meals together when Will sends Phil back to Earth.
Will is a tall, lean man that looks to be in his 20-somethings, with fair skin and messy blonde hair. His eyes are a bright, glowing purple that glow with a white cross-shaped light. This unique eye color matches that of his Wisps, which appear to be ghostly, violet flames. Will’s angelic uniform is long and loose, noticeably torn and tattered at the bottom, showing he has bare feet and bare legs. His outfit is colored black, with gold accents on the bottom of the robe and the ends of his sleeves. The same gold color is seen on his beaded necklace with a cross pendant. Most notable about Will’s appearance are his large wings, which are nothing but bone. The skeletal structure of the wings shares its boney material with the Holy Scythe, a massive sickle made entirely out of sharpened bone. He can hide his wings at will in order to blend in with humans better.
