Wayne Gates

ℹ️ Basic Info

• Wayne died at the age of 25 and became a ghost. His soul did not finish it’s ascent to Heaven, and he’s stuck on Earth for the foreseeable future. 
• Wayne is an incredibly smart and incredibly opinionated nerd. He jumps at any chance to share his thoughts and to lecture others.
• He is a very lazy homebody, and prefers to spend his time surfing the internet, playing video games and watching anime. 
• He yearns for any attention from beautiful, feminine women… but is also terrified of them and turns into a stammering, quivering mess.
• Wayne is still a new ghost, and does not have many ghostly powers yet outside of floating and turning invisible/intangible. Wayne stays solid most of the time so he can interact with the world. He can still feel physical pain despite being dead. 
• He grew up as a regular human in the cursed city of Ashgrave. He was raised by a mummy mother (Cleo) and a zombie father (Ed). 
• Wayne previously flunked out of Ashgrave’s University of Mad Science due to an MMORPG addiction. He became a Junior Officer of the Jaycee Pawman Squad as a last resort.  
• Wayne works alongside Jaycee Pawman and Cat Canada. He tutors Jaycee with a homeschool curriculum.

🎭 Personality

Wayne is extremely intelligent with an IQ of 178, and he takes any opportunity to show it off. He is motivated to teach others knowledge through his ego rather than his altruism.

Wayne’s morals can be dubious. While he is aware of rules, he is willing to break them if he think he knows better. He enjoys finding out any exploit or loophole. However, he would never betray anyone he cares about. 

He is very proud and obsessive over his collection of toys, photos and games - especially if they are in their original packaging. He’s a bit of a slob in other areas, but always keeps his stuff organized. 

Wayne is lazy, and can fall asleep anywhere. He is often too lazy to cook, and snacks on junk food instead. Sometimes, he combines food in strange, dubiously-tasting ways when he’s feeling hungry and creative. 

Wayne loves beautiful, feminine women… but they’re not too crazy about him! He wants a relationship, but is extremely awkward and terrified around women he finds attractive. He would never hit a pretty lady - something like a sexy villainess could put his safety (and his job) in jeopardy! 

Wayne has Thalassophobia - a fear of very deep bodies of water. While he cannot “drown” as a ghost, he refuses to float over the open ocean because he could lose altitude and be trapped under the sea. He can swim, but at greater difficulty now that he has no legs. 

Wayne prefers to settle conflicts through words, or through challenges of wit. If the conflict turns physical, he turns invisible and hides. 

Wayne was always very lonely and too socially awkward to make friends. Wayne has a “imaginary brother” named Criss that he talks to sometimes at night. Criss is a secret, and only Cleo, Ed, Jaycee and Cat Canada know about him.

🧬 Biology

As a Tooniverse denizen, Wayne has the typical biology and abilities of a fictional human character. He can pull items from behind his back… but only when it’s funny! Wayne is logical when solving problems and doesn’t rely on this often. 

Wayne is blessed with a photographic memory and excellent recall. This made him a high achiever in school. 

Wayne is overweight and physically unfit. 

Wayne has “oven mitt”-shaped hands with “implied fingers”. His fingers only exist when he needs to gesture with them, or in certain activities like typing on a computer. 

Despite having no visible ears, Wayne can hear just fine! 

Despite being dead, Wayne still has behaviours such as breathing and eating. He does not need to do these anymore, but they are an automatic and psychological behaviour. These behaviours are likely to fade the longer he remains a ghost.

Wayne is a new ghost, having only recently died before the webcomic’s events. Because of this, he is limited in his ghostly powers. More information about his ghostly biology below!

🫥 Ghostly Invisibility: 

• Wayne can turn invisible/intangible and phase through solid objects. 
• He can only stay invisible for a short time. He compares it to holding in a breath or clenching a muscle. 
• He loses control of his invisibility around pretty women!

👻 Ghostly Floating: 

• Wayne floats several inches off the ground unless sitting or sleeping. 
• Floating is not totally effortless, he is acting against gravity. Wayne gets tired floating at high speeds, or floating up in an incline.

💡 Ghostly Glow: 

• Wayne’s body gives off a soft glow in the dark. 
• He can turn this glow on and off. He doesn’t glow when in a bad mood or when tired.

😵‍💫 Ghostly Possession: 

• Wayne’s soul can possess the body of others for a limited time. Wayne can control the body, but his control depends on the will of the host body. 
• He can only possess very dumb, suggestible minds and has enormous difficulty separating from his host.

👿 Ghostly Weaknesses: 

• Salt weakens ghosts, and Wayne is no exception! He temporarily loses all his ghostly powers (except floating) if his body has salt on it. He is also weakened by swimming in salty ocean water and eating salty foods.
• Being a ghost, Wayne is weak to any “holy” or “light” magic. This is especially true for any “soul banishing” magic. Conversely, Wayne is resistant to “demon” or “dark” magic. However, he can still be controlled by a powerful necromancer. 
• Wayne can be easily blown away by wind when invisible. He can also be trapped in vacuum cleaner bags. 
• Wayne can be defeated by any modern pop-culture ways of defeating a ghost. For example, something like the proton beams from Ghostbusters, or the Power Pellets from Pac-Man

Being undead does NOT make Wayne immortal! He can still get hurt, and can slip into a coma at the worst. If any body part gets severed, he has to wait to regenerate it.

🔍 History 

Wayne grew up as an only child in the cursed city of Ashgrave. He was one of the only normal humans in a city of spooky monsters! 

His parents are Cleo and Ed Gates. Cleo was very warm and smothering to him, while Ed was very cold and employed “tough love”. Wayne had to endure his parent’s arguments on how to raise him. 

Wayne was very bright at a young age, and excelled in school. He was accepted into Ashgrave’s University of Mad Science. 

On Wayne’s 25th birthday, his mom bought him a copy of “SwordRealms” - a very addictive medieval fantasy MMORPG. Wayne plays the game constantly, leading him to flunk out of university. 

After a final, very long play session of SwordRealms, Wayne’s body finally gives out. He dies and his soul floats up to heaven. Unfortunately, Wayne never completes the ascent flight as he exceeded the weight limit. 

Wayne is relatively unaffected by his own death. He didn’t have much of a life in the first place! However, he does wonder about his future and seeing everyone else age and die. 

Wayne’s father threatened to kick him out of the house unless he was either employed or in post-secondary education. Wayne joined the Jaycee Pawman Squad as a last resort. He is currently Jaycee’s homeschool tutor and works with fellow junior officer Cat Canada. The three of them go on problem-solving adventures all over the world!

Wayne had a belly button while living, but it vanished upon his death. 

Wayne knows basic conversational Japanese from watching anime. 

The name “Wayne Gates” comes from the corruption of the phrase “gains weight”.
