Northern Heavens (Draugr/Ghost)

Profile

Draugar are the soulless corpses of the dead who occasionally become reanimated in the crypts and tombs of the Northern Heavens. Also known as drogs or draugs, draugar live in their graves, often guarding treasure buried with them in their burial mound. They are reanimated corpses with a corporeal body, unlike ghosts, with similar physical abilities as in life. A draugr possesses superhuman strength, can increase their size at will, and carry the unmistakable stench of decay. Alfen draugar often haunt the crypts and tombs of Alfheim. While they may retain some memories, very little what they were when they were living remains, instead taken over by the primal urges of survival and disdain for those that are still alive.

Ghosts are rare on Alfheim, as most souls are taken by Hel immediately after death. But being demigods, the alfar are capable of splitting their souls and leaving pieces of themselves behind. Like the draugar, ghosts are commonly found in crypts and tombs. They are most frequently left behind to protect these territories. The circumstances of their deaths and purpose for being left behind result in a few variations of ghosts, such as the Útburður.

When a human infant is abandoned by its mother and dies of exposure, its spirit becomes a ghost known as an utburður. These ghosts take on the form of a raven, but in place of the bird's head is the infant's skull. The color of their feathers depend on the cloth the newborn was wrapped in before it died. They often torment the mothers that abandoned them, though sometimes they help them instead.
