Is there anything more fun than creating new characters? Probably not...but there are certainly things that we enjoy outside of that creative process. From movies we love to watch, songs we listen to on repeat, books we can go back to over and over, and games we could play for hours if not days on end, and as a result. Sometimes, intentionally or not. We inject a bit of our other loves into the creative process. This thread is for that very purpose. Was your character's name a reference to someone from your favorite book? Was their fashion sense lifted from a show you watched? Did you get their hairstyle from an anime you saw ages ago or did some aspect of their past come about from listening to that song that you just love? Why not post the connections here? All references from big to small. From details that may seem super obvious to you to the minor minutia that someone only as in-depth in whatever lore as you would even start to recognize? It doesn't matter. If you have something that helped influence your character why not share it here and let everyone know, not only something that went into your creative process, but also maybe introduce people to something new.
Examples:
Your character's pet is named after something from a video game
Your character wears a bit of jewelry taken from some part of a short story
Your character has a phone charm of some video game faction
Please note: This is just a thread for references. Sure these references could inform large parts of a character's design or world but there's a difference between that and say a fan character for whatever bit of media they were made for. Nothing against fan characters it is just not the goal of this thread. However, if you have a fan character who has a reference to some other bit of media? Say a wizard for the Harry Potter universe who loves a particular band from the 90s enough to have some merch on them to a Homestuck fantroll with some obscure video game reference? They are more than welcome here. In essence.
X: A fan character on their own
✔: A fan character with a reference in their design to some outside media.
Alex and her best friend Tara were inspired by Mulder and Scully respectively. More specifically that contrast between the true believer and the skeptic.
Well, Yuki's outfit design is definitely a watermelon !
His shirt says だじゃれ which means "joke, pun" in japanese: Yuki loves puns.
i really liked the design of the travelers in journey ( boop) and i think it rubbed off on my shapeshifters a tiny bit hoo
like half of Felony's character design is totally ripped off off the main character of d-gray man who's name I don't even remember now jfcc. Actually her whole design used to be based on some random stage magician guy who was on Australian Idol years and years ago who's hair I thought was cool lmao. She doesn't resemble him at all now tho.
Xaanik's design has had a lot of Dragon Age references peppered through it throughout the years. I think I actually got inspired to give him his markings from seeing a pic of Fenris for the first time. His gauntlets are a lot like some of the ones your Inquisitor can equip. Also, his weird biker aesthetic is a lil shout-out to one of my fav digimon, Beelzemon.
Crispin is pretty much one big Good Omens reference
While I'm at it, let's not forget dear, sweet Lucifer who is pretty much a fusion of Alucard, Reaper, Beelzebmon Blast Mode, and some kind of obnoxious gaming hardware.
Tomoko was kind of a joke character based on your typical tsundere onee-chan.. so yeah that's in my opinion a dorky reference
Machine's colors were all based off Nocturne City album cover since she's a sona and I'm fan of Perturbator's music ... does that count? ;v;
He wears a lot of shirts and sweaters with Twenty One Pilots lyrics, his theme is from them, and he listens to them a lot. I might be a tiny bit obsessed.
Bozard's horns were derived from those of Bowser from Mario. Also, I unintentionally made him have similarities to Charizard, and his name partially reflects that.
Machina's coloring originally was 100% obtained by using the eyedrop thing to get colors off an image of Peace Walker. That later changed when I refined the blue-grey and gave her a blue eye as well, but it's more or less the same basic idea I originally had.
Violette got her coloration from the Gengar line. I think I had images of all them up when making her. Though with black hair and pink eyes instead.
