A bunch of short little stories from Sonnet's foalhood. Somewhat in chronological order, and only loosely connected with each other (minus them all taking place in Candentia, when matters were simpler and times were happier)

15 - Beach Ball

Sonnet let his magic swirl around him, the aura around his antlers glowing brighter as he reached out with the tendrils of his magic. The magic coursing through his veins was powerful, and he relished the feeling of wielding it as his own, commanding that wildness.

Most of the time, he used his magic inside the palace, enclosed within four walls. If he wasn't testing his magic inside the palace, then he was inside the jousting arenas, working on improving his jousting ability. No matter what, when he unleashed his magic, it often was often in a confined situation.

Now though, he realized as he danced across soft sands, waves crashing against the shoreline, his magic was never meant to be constrained. It was truly freeing to let his magic go, without perceivable limits. He could feel the never ending ocean, and the immeasurable expanse of water next to him, with his hydrokinesis magic. Nothing could ever compare to the feeling of realizing how far his magic could stretch. Not far enough to control the oceans, but enough

He reached out with his telekinesis next, picking up pieces of sand and some small rocks, and letting it all swirl around him. It was exhilarating. He let it drop, chest heaving as he took a deep breath in and then exhaled. Magic was exhausting, but exhilarating all the same.

Sonnet then picked up a beach ball in the distance, fairly new, but evidently forgotten by some beach-going Quirlicorn. He tossed the light-weight object into the air with his telekinesis. The multi-colored ball grew smaller, shrinking, before growing larger as it fell back to the ground. He grinned, before placing it back on the gray rocks he had grabbed it from.

He paused for a moment, eyes still on the beach ball, as if he was trying to decide what he wanted to do.

Sonnet looked around him, eyes scanning the sands around him, confirming that there weren't any Quirlicorns around him. He didn't know if what he wanted to try would work, and he certainly didn't need an audience to witness his failure, if by some chance it didn't work. (Nor did he want to bother with controlling his magic, and reigning it back in.)

After he confirmed that he was truly alone on the sandy beach, he picked up the beach ball again. He took a deep breath, before charging in towards the waves, holding the beach ball out in front of him, as he tried to use his hydrokinesis in combination with telekinesis, to push the water out of the way.

It both worked, and didn't, Sonnet realized, twisting around as the waves crashed around him. He couldn't quite keep all of the water away from him, and small splashes of water would escape the grasp of his magic, spraying him with salty ocean water.

But, Sonnet thought, grinning in delight, it had worked. And he was now standing in the middle of the ocean, playing with a beach ball, all while controlling the water around him. He laughed loudly and joyously, half grinning like a maniac, because he had used two different magics at the same time, to do two separate things.

He was truly amazing, wasn't he?

He loved magic.
