A bunch of short little stories from Sonnet's foalhood. Somewhat in chronological order, and only loosely connected with each other (minus them all taking place in Candentia, when matters were simpler and times were happier)

9 - Rain Shower

A large, fat droplet of water landed on Sonnet's nose, causing him to stop in his steps, blinking in surprise.

He looked up at the sky, noting that the blue sky still seemed rather, well, blue. If he was forced to describe the sky in more detail, he might say it looked slightly grayer than before, with the fluffy white clouds replaced by slightly darker fluffy white clouds. There weren't too many clouds, and rain clouds could be seen. In particular, Sonnet didn't see any clouds directly above him.

No more mysterious droplets of water fell from the sky, so Sonnet wondered if the water on his nose was just the result of a stray droplet of water from somewhere nearby. Although, turning his head to look at his surroundings, he couldn't figure out exactly where a stray droplet of water could come from. Nothing seemed likely to be the source of water.

Perhaps the water was indeed rain?

The presumed droplet of rain couldn't have come from anywhere though.

Sonnet let his thoughts drift off to the conversation he had just had with his grandmother Radiance, Psychomyth, and Martine. (And Minuet, of course),

In which his grandmother had explained exactly why he and Minuet were to begin taking even more lessons; there were the ones they were already taking with Reilyn and Parav, but now lessons with a mare named Arisane were added in. (Leaving him with even less time to practice his magic.)

He felt rather vindicated, that the lessons weren't an attempt to stop him from playing around with his magic and testing various theories out, but rather simply to prepare him and his sister for their role in Candentia. It seemed right, that there he would eventually be the one to rule over Candentia, however far off that was in the future.

While Sonnet had puffed his chest out, ready to prove to the three older Quirlicorns that he would be the perfect Heir (a term he had heard floating around the Palace and around the streets of Candentia) and exceed their expectations, Minuet had almost seemed slightly unsure if being an Heiress was a good thing, until Sonnet had turned towards her, promising that the two of them, together, would make Candentia into the best island ever to exist.

At which, Minuet gave Sonnet a warm smile, any traces of wariness washing away, replaced with pure eagerness for their lessons and a burning curiosity to learn.

Yet now, after the conversation had ended, Sonnet now had some questions about why he and his sister had been chosen, to rule Candentia whenever their grandmother retired.

A few more droplets of water fell from the sky.

Sonnet, yet again, glanced upwards. This time, there was indeed a gray cloud above him.

"Huh, it is raining," he murmured, to no one in particular. Suddenly, hundreds of thousands of raindrops seemed to fall from the sky at the same time, covering him with water. (His poor mane.)

Thankfully he was close to one of the library entrances. His plans to go get a quick snack from the shop with the tiny umbrellas would need to be postponted to later, evidently.

Inside the library, he stumbled straight into a white stallion.

"Greetings Uncle Lux," Sonnet said.

Luxaeterna invited him to a small, private corner of the library. "Hello to you to, Sonnet. Here to avoid the rain?"

"Basically," Sonnet answered, settling on one of the large beanbags. "Could I ask you something?"

He looked at Sonnet, "Depends on the question, but go ahead."

Sonnet stared at Luxaeterna for a brief moment, chewing his lip as he tried to figure out how best to ask the questions that had been burning in his mind. "Um, Uncle Lux, so you know how Grandmother rules Candentia?"

"Ah, yes. Did your grandmother have a conversation with you? About what she does as Regent? And how much did she tell you about Candentia?"

"I think..." Sonnet paused. "I think she explained a decent amount. But there still feels like something hasn't been explained. I guess- I suppose it feels like some things don't make sense?" He scrunched his nose up, tilting his head as he thought back to the places that didn't quite make sense.

"Anything in particular?"

"Yeah. My biggest question is why are Minuet and I both 'heirs'? And why not you and Father?"

"The hardest question to answer," Luxaeterna said, slowly. "I don't know too many details... If your grandmother hasn't told you yet, I think she'll explain more when you're older."

"But the basic reason, has to do with a prophecy."
