A bunch of short little stories from Sonnet's foalhood. Somewhat in chronological order, and only loosely connected with each other (minus them all taking place in Candentia, when matters were simpler and times were happier)

7 - Tiny Umbrellas

The streets of Candentia were known to have curious artifacts and treasures from the various lands, as different Quirlicorns and various merchants would return from their travels, laden with whatever they thought was interesting, valuable, or would attract the attention of other Quirlicorns.

This was especially true, with the recent alliance that had been built with Espeor, and travel from Candentia to the Quirlicorn mainlands becoming easier and far more reliable.

Sonnet and Minuet would often come through the streets, youthful eyes wide open as they searched for whatever new curiosities were being sold. It was an open secret among the merchants, that the two grandfoals of Regent Radiance would often leave a gold coin or two, worth far more than whatever goods they purchased. Some had tried to explain to the foals how the currency worked, but none of the lessons ever seemed to get through. Minuet would offer her gentle smile, and politely decline that she was overpaying for the goods. (Generally though, she didn't overpay by too much.)

Sonnet on the other hand, seemed to ignore any words about not needing to pay so much, simply shrugging, as if the effort needed to count his coins and pay the correct amount was far more than simply tossing a few gold coins and moving on. Either that, or if it was a shop he frequented often, Sonnet would tell the shopkeeper to bill his father, Noxaeterna, and then skip out of the store.

One of such stores was one that offered a various collection of desserts, sweet treats, and cold, refreshing drinks in the summer. Sonnet would often show up, Minuet or Resplendence beside him, and demand the special of the day, rarely ever reading the menu. One thing that stayed constant, was the fact that Sonnet never once glanced at the prices, never mind the fact that the shop had a reputation for being one of the most expensive shops in Candentia, with most Quirlicorns only buying from there for special occasions.

Sometimes, Sonnet would wolf down the treats, with a smile, and then saunter out the door. Other times, he'd take his time, and savor each bite, before leaving.

But no matter what, when Sonnet left the store, he always had a tiny umbrella with him, generally floating in the air, the young foal's telekinesis magic wrapped around the umbrella. The color and pattern varied by the day, with some umbrellas decorated with various fruits and flowers, while others had landscapes painted on. Still others were a simple pattern of spots, or on some occasions, a solid color. The tiny umbrellas came with whatever food or drinks were ordered, and thus Sonnet had soon amassed a fairly large collection. Some of the more regular patrons (they didn't come to the shop frequently, just more often than the average Quirlicorn did) would joke amongst themselves, that Sonnet was trying to get a complete collection of all the different tiny umbrellas.

In some ways, those Quirlicorns had guessed correctly.

Because, in one of Sonnet's rooms, in the Palace where he lived, there was an entire section dedicated to those tiny umbrellas.
