A bunch of short little stories from Sonnet's foalhood. Somewhat in chronological order, and only loosely connected with each other (minus them all taking place in Candentia, when matters were simpler and times were happier)

8 - Post It Notes

Sonnet wandered through the palace halls, with Minuet following close behind him. His hooves clicked against the stone floors, the sound of his hoofsteps echoing in the halls. The palace halls were quieter than usual, and for some reason, didn't instantly bring to mind the atmosphere of a jousting arena.

“I don’t get why we need to take history classes,” Sonnet complained to his sister as they walked. He flicked an ear out of annoyance, his gaze slowly moving around, not focusing on anything in particular. “It’s not like we don't have anything else to do."

Minuet gave him a fond smile, her expression carrying a touch of exasperation. "But think of all that we'll learn! Aren't you excited to complete the homework Parav left us?"

At this, Sonnet let out a groan. "Seriously? You want to read a book and fill five post-it notes with summaries of five different pages? Each? In a whole book? We could be jousting right now! Or trying out some of the magic games that Reilyn taught us!”

“Oh come on, Sonnet!” Minuet said, “It’ll be fun! The library is always fun! We can find a book that’s interesting, you know those exist.”

“Fine. Perhaps we could,” Sonnet allowed, “but still not as fun as jousting.”

“For you, maybe,” Minuet countered. “But no matter, we can go to the library now, get the assignment finished, and then if we finish up quickly, we could see if Uncle Lux has any new books on magic?”

Sonnet thought for a moment, before agreeing with an enthusiastic nod. “I do hope he has new books for us!”

Minuet turned tail, and started off towards the library. Sonnet followed suit, and the two foals were soon galloping at full speed through the palace halls.

“I’m so happy the library is connected to the palace,” Minuet said, once they arrived at the Candentia library.

Sonnet nodded in agreement, taking a moment to breath in deeply and to feel the ambient magic in the air around the two of them.

The library always had a certain feel to it, magically speaking. Sonnet guessed it was because of the books held within the library walls, with the books being both vessels for knowledge and for magic. Especially because the third floor of the library, with the thick tomes Uncle Lux never let them touch, had a thick, strangely alluring magic drifting through most of it, accumulating near the shelves with the oldest books.

“So, where do we find a book on the history of the Quirlicorn Realms?” Sonnet asked, “Parav never specified a specific book or topic for us to cover. Just that it needed to be far enough in the past that Grandmother wouldn’t know it?”

“I was thinking we could go for the very beginning,” Minuet suggested, “You know, with the creation of the Quirlicorn Realm by the Greater Deities?”

“But wouldn’t the creation of the lands be more myth than fact?”

“I don’t think Parav specified that,” Minuet grinned, “And what could be more ‘history’ than a book about the first Quirlicorns that ever existed?”

“I want to do that now,” Sonnet said. “We are definitely going to write fill post-it notes on that!”
