A bunch of short little stories from Sonnet's foalhood. Somewhat in chronological order, and only loosely connected with each other (minus them all taking place in Candentia, when matters were simpler and times were happier)

2 - BBQ

Sometimes, when the sun had set, and the stars lit up the sky, Sonnet would curl up against Minuet, and listen to their grandmother narrate the stories written in the constellations for them. Occasionally, their older cousin, Resplendence would join them, often chiming in with her own interpretations of the stories.

Tonight though, Sonnet and Minuet were alone. They weren't curled up on the ground, tails entwined together, but rather standing as they watched Resplendence and the older Quirlicorns chat. A smoky scent filled the air, along with the smell of warm, delicious, barbequed foods being cooked.

Sonnet put his head closer to Minuet, focusing on her magic, and her magic alone.

Then he let his telepathy activate, redirecting the tendrils of magic to pick up the thoughts of Minuet alone. He had quickly learned that letting his magic move freely was a bad idea sometimes, especially when using telepathy in a room full of Quirlicorns. It meant loud and headaches. And he didn't quite understand why yet, but he knew Quirlicorns didn't particularly like telepathy. So he never mentioned he had six magics, not five, when Noxaeterna introduced him to Psychomyth. Nor did he let Minuet correct Noxaeterna. Their telepathy would be a secret —their secret.

He pulled up thoughts of a third foal nestled between them, a foal smaller in size, and a coat that didn't quite match theirs. But a foal that was born with a similar magical prowess —weaker, but strong nonetheless.

Minuet answered via telepathy. "Sidra."

Sonnet wondered how Sidra was.

Minuet sent back the telepathic equivalent of a shrug. "I hope she's doing well," she added. Intermixed with her words were thoughts and feelings about loneliness, family, and a general question regarding what Espeor was like.

"I as well," Sonnet thought.

"There you two are!" their father approached the two of them, interrupting their silent conversation. "Come with me." He gestured towards the gathered Quirlicorns.

Minuet ducked her head, uncertain about the number of Quirlicorns out there, next to the bonfires and grills.

"Minuet, I know there's a lot of Quirlicorns you don't know," Noxaeterna said gently, "And I know it seems scary. But you'll have Sonnet by your side, and I can introduce you to the some of the nice Quirlicorns, okay?"

Sonnet nodded, "We'll be fine, Minuet!"

"Okay then," Minuet nodded back.

"Lovely," Noxaeterna said, sweeping his tail around his two foals. "Let's go find Barricades first. She has a daughter, Percuka. Percy's a bit older than Resplendence, but I think you'll like her."

They found Barricades and Percuka rather quickly. After Noxaeterna dipped his head in greeting, Sonnet and Minuet both followed his cue, bowing in a practiced, but still clumsy manner.

"Sonnet," the purple colt chirped. "Happy to meet you!"

Minuet echoed him, "Minuet. Happy to meet you as well."

"Pleasure to meet you two as well." After replying to the two foal's greeting, Barricades turned back towards Noxaeterna. "I presume our foals with Queen Khaalida?" Barricades asked, looking over the two long-legged foals.

"Yep," Noxaeterna replied, "Sonnet, Minuet, meet Barricades and Percuka."

"I am Percuka, but please call me Percy," the filly said, "Nice to meet you Sonnet, Minuet!"
