DRAGONS

Status: Open

Homeland: Veluzoth

Dragons, like the Protokeros, are ancient psuedo-spirits residing all over the world. They were created by the ancient Greater God, Tempest. There are many sentient and non-sentient creatures in Telluvial that posess draconic blood, but there are only four breeds of True Dragons: Hoarfrost, Terraforge, Mire, and Arc. They are innate magic users, and their territories are affected by their innate magic. A dragon's lair is the epicenter of its territory, and the vault to its hoard. A dragon's lair is extremely dangerous, and often kept far from prying eyes (and sticky fingers). The hoards of dragons are always impressive, but each dragon is driven to collect wildly varing things depending upon their tastes. Some have a fondness for collections that speak to world history, while others simply covet gold. In addition to their magical abilities, dragons are also capeable of spraying breath of destructive energy unique to their particular breed. Dragons are also one of the few species with the ability to shapeshift, and many use this ability to immerse themselves in other cultures. Some dragons of lesser moral standing might use their shapeshifting to gain power within certain societies, or perhaps to entertain themselves at the expense of the folks in the communities they walk among.

  • Average lifespan: 3500 years
  • Diet: Damn near anything; including, but not limited to meat, seafood, vegetables, and minerals. Terraforge dragons especially have a love for minerals.
  • Average number of offspring: 1
  • Magic: Powerful inherent magic users. Pseudo-spirits like the Protokeros. They were created by the original God of Storms, Tempest. She was a Greater God, but when she was slain, her usurper was designated Lesser Status.

HOARFROST DRAGONS

Hardy and built for frigid climates, these dragons are known for their furred and feline-like bodies, and are the only breed of dragon not to possess any scales. They have extremely long, tusk-like fangs sometimes protruding from both the top and bottom jaws, curling outward with age. Their massive claws resemble paws more than talons, and are covered in thick fur that trails on the ground behind the foot. They are skilled hunters, and take advantage of their physique to help them hunt silently in the snowy regions most of them call home. They have exceptional eyesight, both in the light and dark. Their breath is a frigid blast of air that can entirely encase creatures in blocks of ice. In some cases, shards of ice are formed and can pierce whatever the dragon breathes at.

  • Colors: Hoarfrost dragons can exhibit any natural and unnatural color fur, manes, wings, and eyes.
  • Horns: Hoarfrost dragon horns can be any shape and size. Colors are typically natural, but in rare cases, some Hoarfrosts have translucent horns that resemble ice. Ice horns are considered a rare trait, and are not to be used without permission.
  • Tusks & Fangs: Hoarfrost dragons always have at least one set of tusks protruding from the lower jaw. Occasionally, some Hoarfrost dragons might sport a pair of fangs from the upper jaw, or a second set of tusks. These teeth must be actively ground down to prevent them growing too long to be usable, and Hoarfrost dragons often gnaw on tree bark or stones. Those individuals with more than four protruding teeth typically have a difficult time surviving.
  • Tails and Manes: Hoarfrost dragon tails are always long, and have long trailing fur. Manes are always present, and always thick. Some trail down the back or the center of the belly, but this is not always necessary. Manes most commonly are swept back from the crown of the head, but some individuals like to style their manes over their foreheads like fringe.
  • Wings: Hoarfrost dragons always have wings, with more fur on the backside than the underside. The tips of the wing digits are always clawed. The wings must be large enough to facilitate the dragon's flight. Hoarfrost dragons have powerful muscles that do not tire in snowsqualls, and they are capable of flying for hours in harsh conditions thanks to their thick fur coats.
  • Eyes: Eyes are almond-shaped and framed with thick lashes that aid with keeping snowflakes from flying into the eye. The sclera is hardly visible, as the iris takes up a majority of the visible eye, and the pupils are slit. Eyes are most commonly shades of blue or gray, but any color is possible.

TERRAFORGE DRAGONS

The most populous of the dragon breeds, Terraforge dragons are what typically come to mind when one imagines a dragon. Their bodies are scaled from snout to tail, and a great many Terraforge dragons exhibit mineral or gem-like growths in various places on their bodies, including their horns. Their scales are as hard as steel, and are resistant to normal weaponry. Each dragon has six muscular limbs; two wings, two arms in the front, and two in the rear. The rear limbs have a raptor-like claw on the innermost toes, used for fighting, hunting, and mining for precious stones and ores. Terraforge dragons are incredibly good at burrowing. Their bodies can withstand extremely hot temperatures, and Terraforge dragons often roost near or inside volcanoes or unforgiving desert climes. They have incredible hearing, and are capable of seeing in the dark. This breed is the smallest of the four, growing to a maximum of 45 ft long from snout to tail tip. Their breath is that of fire, though at times the color may vary depending upon the dragon's age or magical affinity. The temperature of the flame can be controlled, making them excellent at forging metals. It is rumored that the first Terraforge dragons were considered to be close friends of the forge god, Antrim.

  • Colors: Terraforge dragons can be any color, although shades of red and metallics are the most common.
  • Horns: horns are always conical and backswept to make burrowing easier, and Terraforge dragons can grow several horns around the crown of the head and side of the face. Some have been known to have a trail of spines along their back running to the tip of the tail.
  • Tails: Their tails are long and taper to a smaller point at the tip. Some may sport a triangular, bone-like tip that can be used to aid in burrowing and mining.
  • Wings: Terraforge wings are massive, scaled, and webbed with a durable leather-like tissue that is resistant to harsh temperatures and tearing.
  • Eyes: Eyes are more rounded and upturned, and have two sets of eyelids; the outer lid, and the inner, transparent lid that protects the eyes from dirt and debris. They will either have slit pupils or no pupils at all.
  • Mineral Growth: The growths these dragons can sometimes exhibit most commonly resemble minerals and gems, and are either embedded in between scales or at the base of horns like a rocky crust.

MIRE DRAGONS

The enormous ancestors to alligators and crocodiles, Mire dragons can grow to be nearly 60 feet long from snout to tail tip, and have long and wide bodies that sit low to the ground. Their powerful legs not only propel them at great speeds in the water, but also allow them to sprint on land. These dragons make their homes in swamps, hence their name. They are by far the most aggressive of the dragon breeds, and would be considered feral if not for their ability to speak. Their breath weapon is a spray of poison.

  • Colors: Mire dragons exhibit mostly natural scale coloration for camouflage, and the top of the body is always a darker color than the bottom.
  • Horns: A mire dragon's horns are just hardened and overgrown scales protruding from various points along the top of the dragon's body. These horns will always be symmetrical and run the length of the body from the crown of the head to the tip of the tail. Horns are generally short and stubby.
  • Tails: Mire dragon tails are thick at the base and taper towards the end, and are covered in scales.
  • Wings: Mire dragons never have wings.
  • Eyes: Eyes are round and have a translucent inner eyelid beneath the main eyelid to allow the dragon to keep its eyes open underwater. The sclera is hardly visible, as the iris takes up a majority of the visible eye, and the pupils are slit. Eyes are typically green or brown, but can be any color.

ARC DRAGONS

Arc dragons have long, serpentine bodies that are covered in both scales and short, water-resistant fur. They have four limbs situated at far ends of the body, the furred portion stops around the elbow joint, and the rest of the leg is scaled down to the talons. This breed is the largest of the four, and they can grow to a staggering 80 feet long from snout to tail tip.

  • Colors:Arc dragons can exhibit any natural and unnatural color fur, scales, manes, wings, and eyes, although pastel colors are by far the most common.
  • Horns: Arc dragon horns are long, and are either smooth or have protrusions like antlers. These act as lightning rods that capture stray bolts whilst the dragon is airborne, and it is able to convert and store the energy to aid in its flight process. Colors are typically natural, but in rare cases, some Arc dragons have translucent horns that crackle with lightning. Lightning horns are considered a rare trait, and are not to be used without permission.
  • Tails and Manes: Arc dragon tails are always long, and have a small tuft of fur at the tip that connects to a larger crest of fur running down the center of the dragon's back all the way to the crown of the head. Crests are always present, and the hair is always short.
  • Wings: Arc dragons never have wings
  • Eyes: Eye shapes can vary, and the eyes are lined with lashes. The sclera can either be visible or not, and pupils are rounded. Teals and pastel blues are the most common eye colors, but any color is possible.
  • Whiskers: Arc dragons always have at least two long, thick whiskers that extend to at least the base of the neck. It is possible to have more than one set of whiskers, but extremely rare to have more than three sets.

HOARFROST DRAGONS

  • Society: Hoarfrost dragons are the most social of the four breeds, and live in clans of five or six adults and their young offspring. These dragons tend toward monogamy, and mate for life. They share their lairs and hoards with each other, and if they have offspring, raise the offspring kindly until it is time for them to leave the lair and seek out their own. A high importance is placed on appearance, and Hoarfrost dragons spend hours grooming their fur and tusks. They usually never appear before others at social functions without adorning themselves in fine fabrics or jewelry from their hoards, and are always competing to be the best-dressed thing in the room.
  • Lairs: The frigid nature of a Hoarfrost dragon's magic affects the territory surrounding its lair. The weather within a five mile radius becomes chilled, growing colder the closer to the center you travel. If it settled in an already cold area, the climate becomes unbearably frigid. Lairs are vast and winding, with several chambers connected by tunnels. The terrain is usually covered in thick sheets and spikes of ice and jagged rock, and many who choose to roost outside the mountainous caves of Veluzoth will reclaim abandoned structures. Due to their social nature, lairs are shared by the clan, with each individual or mated couple sharing a den.

TERRAFORGE DRAGONS

  • Society: Terraforge dragons tend to live solitary lives, and prefer to keep their dens separate, even from a life mate. Personal property is of the utmost importance to Terraforge dragons. They are meticulous to a fault, knowing the precise location and quantity of each and every item in its massive hoard, and will know immediately if something has been stolen. The culprit is always mercilessly hunted and slain on the spot.
  • Lairs: Lairs can be found in almost any region or climate, though the most coveted dens lie within volcanic areas. Aside from the treacherous terrain, there are also a plethora of traps and mazes in place to deter would-be thieves from entering, as well as magical wards to alert the dragon of the presence of an intruder.

MIRE DRAGONS

  • Society: A mire dragon will only ever leave its territory just long enough to procreate, never forsaking their lives of solitude. The largest specimens boast massive domains, while small and weak mire dragons might cluster in smaller adjacent territories out of necessity. These "alliances" are unofficial and fragile, and the moment one amongst them shows signs of weakness, the others will oust it. Other dragon breeds consider mire dragons to be no better than feral, however take care never to cross one; these dragons never forgive or forget, even the slightest of offenses.
  • Lairs: Mire dragons always make their homes in swampy or tropical jungle regions, and so few have ventured beyond Veluzoth that some folks of the farthest reaching continents believe them to be a myth. A mire dragon's grotto is always damp, and in many cases, flooded.

ARC DRAGONS

  • Society: While it isn't unheard of for arc dragons to live solitary lives, it is more common for them to take up either romantic or platonic companionship with another. Save for young offspring, there are never more than two arc dragons in a lair. This breed is the most fickle and winsome of the species, and shows the greatest interest in other civilizations. They often hide their form by shapeshifting into other animals in order to observe others, but rarely ever directly involve themselves in the lives of non-dragons. Their approach to other species is more like a scholar or a curious child, hovering over a colony of ants.
  • Lairs: The air is never still in the territory of an arc dragon, the wind shifting from the gentlest breezes to the mightiest hurricanes. Arc dragons typically roost in oceanside cliffs and are most active during thunderstorms. They have a deep love of the open ocean and sky, and often make their hoards from looting sunken ships. Lairs are most often decorated in abundance with wind chimes made from sea shells.

Dragon names are harsh, and often unnecessarily long. If any have earned nicknames or titles, they often tack those on to the ends of their names, and take offense if you don't address them by their full title. This, as one can imagine, can take a great deal of time. Introductions during gatherings of Dragons have been known to take hours.

Veluzoth is a vast continent filled with strange geographical features and ever-changing weather patterns with the migration of dragons. The weather in this place is almost always affected by dragon magic, and very few folks ever venture here.

The only place technology seemingly has in dragon society is another trinket to throw into the hoard.

Dragon Maturity Chart

Maturity Age
Wyrmling 5 yrs or less
Juvenile 8ft-16ft
Adult 100-800 yrs
Ancient 800 yrs or more

Dragons in their true form are rarely seen in other parts of the world by other races, for if the dragons so choose to interact, it is almost always taking the form of one of these races.

The Hitori have a special kinship with dragons, as both the neighboring country and being an avian race. Arc dragons in particular often welcome many Hitori into their territories as supplemental sentries for their lairs, in exchange for protecting the Hitori within their borders.
