Deities & Spirits - Overview

Deities & Spirits

There are a plethora of Gods and spirits worshiped in Telluvial, all going by different names in different languages. Protokeros are no exception to this, although each individual has a patron deity; a God or Goddess that is attuned to them, and it is believed this patron shapes their life journey by granting special gifts in the God's domain. (It is extremely rare, but some Protokeros have more than one patron.) Some Gods overlap into the same minor domains, but represent different alignments and goals within those realms.

There are different tiers of power: Major Gods, Minor Gods, Greater Spirits, Lesser Spirits, and Pseudo-Spirits.

Major Gods are the most powerful supernatural entities and have been around since the beginning of days. These few are the most widely revered and respected, reigning over all living things.

Minor Gods, while not as great in stature as their Major brethren, still hold a place of high honor. They essentially manage finer details in the stewardship of the world, reigning over Spirits.

Greater Spirits are incorporeal, and require an affinity for magic to see or interact with them. They are a step below the Minor Gods, managing more menial tasks in regards to their specific regions.

Lesser Spirits are also incorporieal, and are merely servants of the Greater Spirits.

Pseudo-Spirits are entities that have taken a mortal form, residing in various regions as stewards of the land. The Protokeros are such entities, and in ages past, were once worshiped by lesser beings.

God-Slaying

Gods can be killed, by each other and by mortals. When a God is slain, they are immediately replaced when their powers are transferred to another entity. It is possible for mortals to ascend to Godhood in this way.* They assume the primary domain of the God they have usurped, although their morals and personal convictions might alter any additional domains. The only example in living memory is Ventus assuming Tempest's title as God of Storms. While Tempest was originally over the wind and sky, she became Corrupted over time, and Mar's influence altered her domains. Ventus inherited the domains of wind and sky, but his more carefree demeanor has shifted the secondary domains of this position.

When a God kills another God, no power transfer between the two can occur. It is therefore impossible for any Gods to overthrow each other and absorb each other's power.
