Protokeros Overview

Protokeros

The Protokeros are half mortal, half spirit entities residing in the mortal plane, tasked with bridging the mortal and spiritual worlds. In the earliest days of the world, Verum and Thyra created the Protokeros as the world's stewards, charging them with the protection and balance of the world and all life forms on it. This largely entailed keeping harmony between the sentient life and the flora and fauna, but also keeping check on Corrupted spirits (known more commonly as monsters) and helping greater spirits put them in their place. This was also, unfortunately, a risk for the Protokeros, due to their pseudo-spirit nature, and each are capable of succumbing to the very Corruption they were charged to guard against. Their souls are made of light, and so when they pass on from the mortal world they are reborn as a star.

Protokeros are inherent magic users, not requiring the use of ley lines or spellbooks to allow them access to their power. A Protokeros’ specific magic skill set is determined by their patron god, while the stars are an amplification of this magic; their power is greatly diminished when unable to commune with the stars, which are the manifested spirits of their ancestors.

Disclaimer

Protokeros are a semi-open species by Starkindler Studio. This means that members of the community are permitted a limited number of free MYO slots, but any additional Protokeros after that must be earned, won, or purchased. Please visit the Traits pages to learn more about the species. MYO slots for purchase can be obtained directly through Starkindler. In order to own a Protokeros, you must either join the Discord or the DeviantART group. This information is also available on the Protokeros website, but this page is more mobile-friendly.

Aging & Lifespan

The lifespan for a full-blooded Protokeros is typically up to 2500 years, though a few have been known to reach their 3000th birthdays, in rare cases. They reach young adulthood at the age of 30, and they seem to stop physically aging until around 2400 or older. When a Protokeros nears the end of its life, its body undergoes a plethora of changes and the individual loses all pigmentation on their bodies over a period of time. It starts as just a dulling and eventually graying of the body, however the luminescence of their eyes grows brighter and brighter until the eyes are completely white, and the pupils are gone. This process blinds the individual. Once a Protokeros has reached the last stage, it is a matter of days before they pass on to the afterlife. Their entire body radiates light, and the physical body fades, and their spirit is sent to its eternal place among the stars. This is known as The Fading. If a Protokeros is slain or consumed by illness, they do not experience the Fading. Their mortal body remains, the eyes turn gray, and the soul is removed from the body.

Consumption is the opposite of the Fading. If a Protokeros succumbs to corruption, their eyes turn completely black, as their Light has gone out. They are unable to go to their resting place among the stars. Once they reach the end of their natural mortal life, their body begins to show inky black patterns, starting from their eyes. Once the body turns solid black, they turn to dust, and what is left is consumed by the Void.

Hybrids & Cross-Breeds

It is possible for Protokeros to cross-breed with several species, though Protokeran traits like the longer horn and tail will only present themselves if the bloodline has not been too mixed, or in the case of divine blessing. Hybrids may not necessarily have the same life expectancy, though there is little record of them in history. It is unknown at this time if hybrids experience The Fading, as a natural death has not yet been observed or recorded in living memory. The most commonly known hybrid is the Hevonandar/Protokeros cross, most notably that with Wildling Unicorns. In the case of hybrid offspring, it is usually the result of migrant Protokeros settling into other communities outside their homeland. (For the purposes of character creation, hybrids will only be considered if they are an offspring of existing characters. In the case of Wildling Unicorns, permission MUST be given by Rannarbananar.)

Patron Deities & the Rite of Attunement

When a Protokeros reaches adulthood, their affinity for a particular god manifests. The Rite of Attunement is a ceremony held at this time, during which the individual's soul is offered up in prayer and then becomes linked to their patron deity. All magic and power that Protokeros manifests is influenced by their patron, and many devote themselves entirely to their deity's power and influence beyond Vesperia. When a deity is physically near, their patrons can sense that energy. When a Protokeros dies, the patron immediately knows. Most Protokeros only have one patron, but there are a select few who have been favored by multiple gods at once. (This option is not available for MYOs)

Protokeran History

Creation

At the beginning of time, there was Light and there was Void. The Gods, created from Light, desired themselves to create and share their existence. Gods forged the world, drawing from the Light in the universe to do so. Marcaeus, who began to form his own thoughts and desires in secret, sought solitude in the Void, and became Corrupted by it. He then became hostile towards the others, defying Verum and Thyra's lordship. He was cast out, and for an age as the Gods shaped and wrought, they were forced to constantly war with Marcaeus as he destroyed their works. There was one great battle at the end of the world's forming, sending Marcaeus into hiding. It was in the aftermath, that Thyra and Verum created the Protokeros.

Initially the species was prosperous. The creation of the First Eight saw the flourishing of the land, and a healthy balance between all the sentient life forms therein.

The First Eight

The first generation of Protokeros established the kingdom of Vesperia so that they and their descendants would have a home.

  • Prometheus Starkindler - First Born, favored of Thyra and Verum
  • Andromeda Shadoweave, favored of Somnis, spouse to Prometheus.
  • Chromius Hammerfel, favored of Antrum, spouse to Eris.
  • Eris Farstrider, Favored of Theia, spouse to Chromius.
  • Demetrios Silvercloak, favored of Epione, spouse to Airlea.
  • Airlea Featherfall, favored of Tempest(d), spouse to Demetrios.
  • Erxandros Swiftfoot, favored of Theia, spouse to Kallisto.
  • Kallisto Snowhide, favored of Trist, spouse to Erxandros.

Rise and Fall of the Vesperian Empire

It did not take long for Marcaeus to discover the Protokeros. He both was jealous and afraid of them, and sought to bend them to his will, as he ever sought dominion over others. He believed he could overcome the power of the other Gods by spreading his Corruption first among these pseudo-spirits; with the intent that he would have enough of a stronghold in the world to subjugate the Gods by means of corrupting them as well.

Mar began to sow the seeds among the lower castes in the population, posing as their patrons to gain their attention and loyalty. It took ages to work his way up to the royal family, but Mar was eventually able to assume indirect control over nearly half the population by the beginning of Rigela Starkindler's rule. By then, the majority believed that their inherent power entitled them to rule over magically inferior races. This combination of power and their advanced technology led to an overwhelming success in the conquering and subjugation of many of the free peoples on Atuannar and beyond.

The Vesperian Empire eventually spanned the entirety of Atuannar and a good portion of the Polar Wilds, and the Protokeros remained in power for thousands of years. Typical of conquest, Protokeros warriors siredquite a bit of illegitimate children. As years drew on and the Protokeros Half-Bloods mixed further and further into Hevonandar society, the lineage morphed into what is now known as the Unicorn. They were vastly inferior magic users compared to their ancestors, and their only common trait was the possession of a horn on the forehead. There are varying species, and those that are more closely related to the Protokeros retained their deer-like features and curved horns, although a majority of Hevonandar Unicorn horns are no longer curved due to dilution of Protokeran heritage.

Near the end of Imperatori Rigela's unnaturally long life, when she was supposed to enter into The Fading, it became clear to others that something was amiss. Instead of exhibiting the usual loss of pigmentation, she instead began taking on darker coloration. It was at this point that it became clear to mortals, spirits, and Gods alike that Marcaeus had spread his Corruption of the Void. The civilization became unstable, until finally a civil war broke out. The Corrupted against the remaining forces united against them. The war lasted only a few years, as the Gods quarreled, so too did mortals and spirits. Mar was again forced to flee into the Void, and most of the Corrupted on Telluvial had been pushed into hiding. This marked the end of the Terrible War, and the end of the Vesperian Empire.

The house of Rigela Starkindler had been divided in the war, and it was believed that they had all been slain in battle. There was tension among the remaining Protokeros as to whom would lead them, but it was agreed that only an Heir of Prometheus was worthy of command. The Protokeros were eventually divided; half remained in the capital to begin the long process of rebuilding, while the others chose the life of nomads in the Polar Wilds. The throne, once restored, sat empty for thousands of years.

The Heirs of Prometheus survived, however. There were a few who were able to keep themselves and their young hidden during and after the Terrible War, and they were part of the nomads who set out for the Wilds. It was believed that it was best to keep the true Heirs hidden in secrecy until a more opportune time.

With the populations of all the major species greatly diminished, they all withdrew from each other. In the thousands of years after the downfall of the Empire, Spirits have assumed control over some older cities, while strange monsters have begun to run rampant in recent history. Atuannar is now nearly overrun, and the affliction is spreading into the Polar Wilds.

Present Day

Amalthea Starkindler, believing she could reunite her divided people, revealed herself and her daughter as Heirs of Prometheus. She managed to gather a host of Protokeros scattered across the Wilds and made the treacherous journey to Atuannar. There, she was met with resounding rejection, as none there believed her to be the true Heir. There were whispers about her young daughter, bearing nebulous hair; a trait not seen since the fall of the Empire. Something in Amalthea broke, and taking her host, she returned to the Polar Wilds, refusing to set foot back in Atuannar. Her mental health declined over the decades, and she grew cold and distant from Aurora and the rest of her people.

Amalthea eventually Faded, and Aurora led her people back to Vesperia, vowing to all there that she would prove to them she was worthy of her birthright. Her knowledge of monsters, and Protokeran ruins in the Polar Wilds gave pause to the homelanders long enough for them to concede that if she could prove her worth, she would be accepted as Imperatori. She left all the Protokeros behind, returning once more to the Polar Wilds in hopes of helping restore their civilization to its former state of advanced living. A great many have taken a liking to her and are drawn to her, but are wary that a Half-Blood could truly be their Imperatori. Nevertheless, it is undeniable the help she and her nomads have provided to the advancement of current Protokeran society and the eradication of monsters, and her friends anxiously await her return.
