Overview

Mimi and Meme, pronounced as "My My" and "May May", are a pair of twins from the Inspector Query comic books. They're lesser-known characters, having only appeared in a single comic in which they were attempting to steal from the local museum of magical artifacts. The Inspector had been hired as extra security after the museum received a new magical item, a Magic Wand once owned by a renowned stage Magician who had mysteriously vanished. It was a well-liked enough story, but I don't think it was anyone's favorite by a long shot. It played with the usual trope well enough, wherein the "villains" we're first introduced to are actually the ones who had been wronged and were there trying to put things back the way they’re supposed to be, whereas the supposed "victim" actually ended up being the real criminal. In their case, the twist was that the person in charge of the museum they were stealing from had, in turn, stolen this new and rare Magic Wand. It had actually belonged to Mimi and Meme's now deceased father, and the girls were trying to retrieve the items they lost since the authorities hadn't done anything about it. (As they often don't, unless the Corporal is on the case!) The magic wand was the last thing they had of their fathers. It was a rather touching story!

By the end of their story, they were supposedly adopted by the Corporal, and I believe they were shipped off to some kind of magic based boarding school to better hone their skills so they could one day join the Corporal fight crime. The characters haven't been seen in any comic or show since, outside of the incredibly rare (and sometimes downright vague) reference, like a brochure for the boarding school on the Corporal's desk, or a hard to see photo of what looks like the Corporal with two young girls hanging in his office. Honestly, I'd love to see them make a comeback! Old, rare characters like these are always a blast to see at conventions. Helps you pin point the mega fans who really know their Inspector Query stuff!!

Mimi and Meme...

In a strange twist of events, these two young girls materialized into our world in a blink of an eye... coming from an old, forgotten Inspector Query comic book, just like Query herself and Corporal Jonathan Dough. How they, and others, managed to quite literally walk off the page and into reality I still haven't been able to figure out, but since arriving the two became very lost and confused as to what their role was anymore.

The girls were so lost in this bright, colorful new world, and they ultimately found themselves standing outside of the Puppet Day-Care, run by Mr. Puppet and Mrs. Puppet respectively - the whacky, eccentric husband and wife duo who also produce a rather popular children's tv show, also using puppets, all about learning and being friendly neighbors to each other. The girls had been drawn in by the warmth and care the Puppets have for every child that watches their shows. The girls snuck in and joined a daycare session, ultimately deciding to come back after they learned about the "Magical Friendship Rod" that the Puppet's use in their show. Thinking it to be powered by real magic, the girls eventually stole it, probably hoping it could help them open a doorway back to their own world.

It just so happened that the day the rod went missing, I was chaperoning as Blossom was visiting the daycare, and that day we were supposed to go on a field trip for the first half of the day. By the time we returned we found that the Friendship Rod had been taken. The kids were devastated, including Blossom, as were the Puppets. The show was put on hold, opting to air re-runs in the meantime, as the Puppets ended up hiring myself to find who took their rod. They suspected it might have been the parents of a child, maybe looking to sell it, as they couldn't believe their children would ever do such a thing, but as long as the rod was returned they didn't want to press charges or anything of the like.

Being a mega fan of the show, Blossom ended up tagging along... even though I told her not to repeatedly and kept trying to take her home, and we eventually ran into Renee Sage who was working on some scoop she was very vague about. This was because, as she later told me, she was searching for what she believed to be more characters from her world, the Inspector Query comics, to be in Neo Oldesville again. She joined us in tracking down the girls. Turns out the Puppets had some security cameras installed inside the day care - not because they didn't trust the kids, but because they were CONVINCED their toys/puppets got up and moved in the night and they were determined to catch them on camera. I... didn't say much to that. The video showed two new girls, Mai and May, sneaking in and taking the Rod with incredible speed - in fact, if it weren't for the sheer number of cameras in the room hidden inside toys and other objects, I might not have even caught that anyone WAS in the room!

When I finally tracked them down, they were by an older, abandoned part of town that was doing to be demolished soon for remodeling, standing by a broken down kiosk filled with weathered comic books, frantically trying to get the magic rod to work. Here is when the unthinkable happened and the two transformed into their Mimi and Meme counterparts, using all the same tricks and magic they did in their one-time comic appearance to keep me and Renee from getting to the Rod. It was ultimately Blossom who was able to get through to the girls, they eventually gave up and handed over the Rod, but to Blossom and not me. Renee wanted to take them home with her, seeing as in the comic world it was her friend Corporal Jon who adopted them the first time they appeared, and with the state the Corporal is currently in, she knew they were going to remain lost for a long time without any help. (See file Memory Snatcher) Before anything, however, the girls insisted they returned the Rod themselves. Or at least I think they did, they never spoke once, not even in sign language.

Of course the Puppet's forgave them, and upon hearing they were lost children and thus there was a chance they would be sent over to the Wicke Charity Lost Children Department (something I didn't even know we had), they were very sad to hear the girls were so alone. They realized that that was why the two took the rod, because they wanted to try and find their home again, to which I realized how extra sad it was, seeing as they were clearly trying to go back home to their comic book world, which according to Query, wasn't really possible. The couple decided that they would allow the two to live with them going forward, until a new home could be found. I thought Renee was going to object to this, but surprisingly she did not. In fact, she seemed very relieved by this fact. I guess that would make sense - she's never had to raise kids before, let alone two magically inclined ones. I can barely handle taking care of Blossom for the few hours I have her at a time, I can only imagine what it's like to actually raise a child.

The girls have actually started showing up on the tv show now as reoccurring guests, and have gotten quite popular with the kids. They usually show up as helpers the Magic Friendship Rod summons to help the puppet characters befriend the "bad guy". It's very silly, but still quite cute. I occasionally find myself turning the TV on when the show is airing even if Blossom isn't around, just to see if one of them will be in the episode...

Physical Notes
The pink one is Mimi, and the yellow one is Meme. Apparently Mimi is older by only a few minutes.
The two dress identical, save for the colors and the way their masks look. They get their name from the fact that they perfectly mime each other.
It's hinted at that their hair are actually just wigs.
The masks never come off. Ever.
The faces on the masks don't move/blink/or react, they're just masks. They're perfectly split down the middle so if they were combined they'd make one smiling face.
Personality/Character Notes
  • The two mimic each other constantly and use a special kindo of magic that allows them to temporarily create whatever the mime. This is actually where their names come from; Mimi and Meme, Mime & Mime.
  • They never spoke in the comics, and thus, never speak in real life. They don't even seem to use sign language...perhaps they have their own special language for each other? Maybe they'll never be able to "speak" seeing as they never did in the comics...
  • They probably don't have real faces under those masks seeing as they didn't in the comics, but regardless they refuse to take them off.
  • They've been adopted by the Puppets since being discovered. Occasionally they still get back to their roots and I have to "escort" them home after catching them during a heist.
  • They absolutely adore magicians and magic shows. It'll distract them from anything.
