Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 7 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

Lehmurix I notice you have a lot of characters. Where do you get the inspiration for their designs and overall personalities?

I never really had any art classes growing up and the ones that did weren't so great lol. But I did have amazing teachers who helped me get through school growing up. Since art is something I love I decided to try and become an art teacher to help kids out there so they know they have at least one supporter. I want to become an art teacher for elementary students, mostly because I hope to have kids of my own so I wouldn't mind working with kids.

hedgemaze

randadraws I saw that you want to concentrate in Art Education! That's awesome; I was wondering if anything had inspired that for you (like if you had a great art teacher)? Do you know what grades you would want to teach?

I've known how to code for a long time (mostly HTML/CSS/Javascript, but I was staff on a game that used PHP and I've learned the basics of some other languages just to have that base in a lot of things), but I had to figure out Bootstrap for Toyhouse profiles, haha. Doing things an "easier" way doesn't really come easy to me; I'm used to very manual coding in Notepad, but Bootstrap is flexible in a lot of nice ways and is great for making pages that are mobile compatible.

Someday I need to sit down and redo a couple of aspects of my character profiles that don't look great on certain browsers or on mobile, but I'm not quite looking forward to having to do it for over 100 characters. :')

Anyway yeah I really enjoy coding. I'm not an expert or anything but it's a lot of fun seeing something in your head and working out how to make it a reality-- like any art. Javascript toys are my favorite, like I made this interview generator for a baseball sim I ran with my friends, and it had all these different aspects to it that were really fun to think of and puzzle out how to put into action.

VincentVanGoat

hedgemaze I see that you did your profile coding yourself, I wonder if you knew HTML before, or did you learn it to make the profile? If you did learn it for profile coding purposes, do you enjoy it enough to maybe learn more, or just stick to profile coding?

Ah, OCs are my main hobby besides Sentai and Kamen Rider! And a good place I find for Sentai is if you were a kid who watched Power Rangers, is to start with the original Sentai your favorite season started with. So since I liked MMPR the most as a kid, I went with Zyuranger, and then Dairanger and Kakuranger after, as MMPR used footage from all 3, except for the latter two's suits entirely, the White Ranger was actually from Dairanger, based on Kibaranger, that radical suit in my avatar. Not to mention that Zyuranger through GoGo V is on Shout Factory for free streaming. So that's 1992-1999 covered legally and on a good site. Fansubbing is a bit more of a mess, as there's only a few sites, and a lot of them are shady and shouldn't be used without every adblock measure out there. And then the other obtaining method(not sure I can publicly post such) is rarely around, as some fansubs are older and not kept up with. There's also an easier time following along with an active series, where you just get the episode from the fansubbers directly every week, but I find going with older seasons first can give you a good basis and appreciation for most any season! My personal favorite seasons are Dairanger, Gekiranger and Gokaiger. In the end, you can also just look at suit designs, and pick based off of that, though not every season is subbed, I believe every season from Fiveman onwards is, so that's 1990-2018 covered, with some older seasons covered.

So in short, either based on a PR season you enjoyed at some point and going with the sentai they used footage from, or by suit design! My only reccomendation is Gokaiger waits until you seen a few, not because it heavily spoils anything, but it's still pretty good to have a grasp on how a Sentai usually goes down before it, but at the end of the day, Gokaiger was written for everyone, fans and newcomers alike. The cast is really great and gosh I still need to get art of Vangoat as Captain Marvelous. I mean his icon is actually that, but just a small icon so a piece that shows it more. Just remember it also tries to sell toys but even with that it's usually a good time!

Caine

VincentVanGoat Aside from creative hobbies like OC making, do you have any other hobbies/passions? Also, if I recall correctly, I think you were into super sentai stuff?? What would you consider a good point to start if someone wanted to get more into the whole scene?

It really depends, especially because I'm often distracted/do multiple things at the same time, and often end up stalling things I could technically do really fast. For example with the game story script it took me technically two years but in total it only took me a couple of months to write weeks 2-8 basically, it was just a matter of actually sitting down and creating a routine for it. I write roughly 2000 words per hour depending a little on what I'm doing so if I sit even a couple of hours every day I get a lot of written.

For sprites, it takes me longer to mentally psych myself up for drawing them than it actually takes to do that lmao. Like if I really wanted I could get one sprite with all the expressions done in like two days from sketch to final stage with linearts, colors and multiple expressions, but usually I just keep delaying that work altogether because it's somehow intimidating? I want them to be Good so I should take my time and not rush. Nothing worse than staring ugly sprites for +300 editing hours.

Backgrounds are faster since I just use free-to-use photos I simply edit to fit the aesthetic. It's like a couple of minutes for each edit, but actually finding good images can take much, much longer.

I use tyranobuilder so I don't need to code awfully much or at all; it's mostly those parts that I want to be a bit extra, like multiple choices you all have to pick until you proceed. It's mostly pretty simple code though and steam community is full of super helpful threads. And once you know through trial and error how the engine works it gets way faster. Putting assets into game usually takes like 1-3 hours per in-game day, depending on how many characters are involved and how long the days are

Kogami

Caine Not sure if this has been asked before, but how long does it takes to make the assets (sprites, backgrounds, and maybe overall design, script and coding?) for your Sinfonia visual novel so far?

The concept where it started isn't anything fancy because the childhood me wants to make a story based off some of my fav animes, lol....Basically I started it around 2010 (I was literally 11 or 12) but then out of attachment I kept them until today and often rehaul the story to make it less childish + makes more sense? Thats basically the "basic" of how it started lol

I didnt mention anywhere about making any VN...? (I mean I would, but the format of my plot doesnt seem to suit it unless Im that good at coding to add extra stuff) I do know about tiny bits of making it here and there because my younger sister did a small, personal VN once! I'd say, start with Ren'py since its free and the most popular VN creator? (So youd at least have an active resource and community for it) Try to do the basics like uh, adding sprites, background and dialogues. Once youve gotten used to that, youre free to try other things or use other paid VN creators like Tyranobuilder or Visual Novel maker? Theyre not free like Renpy, but at lot more beginner friendly and less coding work compared to it. Again, these are stuff I observe when my sister is making one....I personally have 0 experience in making any so I cant give any better answer but hopefully it explains a bit, hahah

ophanimkei

Kogami How did you come up with the Angel Game concept? How long have you been developing it? Also, you're working on a visual novel right now? What's it like? I'd love to make one at some point to, but I have no idea where to start ;;

Thank you for the additional luck!

I used to be super interested in science which was where my interest in space stemmed from, however my interest in science has decreased quite a bit since then but my curiosity about  space hasn't. I'm really fascinated by the vastness of space, and I enjoy loosely basing my stories on laws of physics! Many of my stories are based around many of the of the unanswerable questions regarding space too ^^ So I like to see space as a giant sandbox to build my stories in. Space is actually kind of boring aesthetic wise though. It's interesting when looked at from infrared I guess.

I have a visual novel I'm working on, but it's been on the back burner for a little while. I have the entire story line planned out; I just need to learn how to use Ren'Py. I haven't had the time to get around to it though... ;; And I'm writing novels, but writing novels is just something I do for fun haha ^^

ichimilk

TheFaeryKing I saw that you like space! Do you like it because of the aesthetic or because you're interested in the science? Also what other projects are you working on other than the webcomics? Good luck on those btw :0c

HmmMMM well I chose animation over my other choice (visual communication design) because I fell in love with video games! Also movies like pixar and Disney did inspire me a lot. What I want to do is to work on video games later, making cutscenes and cinematics for them! Though my goal is to be a character designer and concept artist, what I really want to do is to bring out my designs to life and make something that's visually appealing. Kinda shallow, really... Before my studies, I only ever done simple blinking animations and make sprites in the Homestuck flash game style, tracing over the sprites as a base. As for what area of animation I am interested in, I'd say character motion animator and visual effects!

ChickieDee

ichimilk

I see on your profile that you're an animation student! What made you pursue animation over other forms of art to study? Are you currently working on any animation projects yet? Do you have any animations that you've done on your own before your studies? Is there a particular area in animation that you're the most interested in working in?

Milkman

ChickieDee

Okay I know this makes you think that I wasn't going into ur profile and that i'm a lazy bastard or anything but srsly why or how is your name ChickieDee? Like I know I've heard it before but like
W h y

I love you tho mwah mwah i demand a full page essay 12pt font double sided and double spaced mla format with proper academic citations.

_______________
nah, you ain't cheating man!!! I can answer all of em! LOL

  • Usually i'm not picky on the milk product unless it's soy. Soy is terrible and I loathe it, and refuse to drink such an abomination. A bit iffy on any form of nut milk. Otherwise??? [The most Superior Milk]. Sometimes it don't gotta be organic.
  • I actually was a Milkman for halloween. And if I ever saw a real milkman, I'd def wouldn't be as excited as I am right now - but I'd go through hell and back just to try to make friends with him! It'd be really cool to have him come by and say "good morning!" almost every day when he delivers my milk!!! [':
  • I would be really excited to see [Grandfather] in a dark alleyway, because he's like... I have a crush on my own man holy crap I don't care if he kills me or not. HE'S A HUNK. But chances he won't kill me he's just there to tell me to keep quiet bc I saw him there !! ;//v//;
Least excited though? Damn. I would be excited to see any of my characters in the alleyway. It'd be Foie Gras if I have to. He's cute and all but I'm pretty sure he can tear me apart if he were to attack me, especially with my size? //shivers. I made him, he's supposed to be terrifying.
zinnia
  • which milk-made product is best and why
  • ALSO if you saw an actual real like milkman, what would your initial reaction be.... (on halloween i saw a crate on someone's porch that said 'the milkman' and i was like HOLY SHIT bc of your mans)
  • which one of your characters would you be most and least excited to see in like, a dark alleyway

okay i know im cheating cuz these are three short questions BUT i cant think of like a long detailed one

(im mobile rn whoops)

-she’s a mini schnauzer except very small.. my neighbor also has one but he’s like 18 pounds and pepper is like .. 8. she’s also not shaved like a snazzier we just let her be fluffy

-she eats some special wet food because of medical stuff and it smells AWFUL. she also gets meat from the table because she’s noisy and annoying and spoiled but it makes her so happy

-she just likes to find a warm spot and snooze..... she’s old. she refuses to go outside when it’s raining altogether and i have to carry her outside and neither of us are happy

-she loves you too......

Kogami

-What breed is Pepper

-What does she eat daily

-Is she an indoor or outdoor doggo

-Tell her I would love her

Long story short, it was an alias I used since my first day on the internet! Of course the good ol' "weeb" me in the past would use a Japanese-like name that was namesaked from an anime character (it was from Lucky Star's Kogami Akira) but I also used it because it's quiiiiite close to the meaning of my real name, haha. I ended up sticking with it despite that because I'm that used to this alias for many years and can't click with any other alias I've tried to change to, lol.

Generally, 2000's anime indeed influenced me in my art, but this one anime called "Crash B-Daman" is the one that kicked me to go with this style (at first I tried to be the "fake" official art type of artist for this anime but then I slowly went with my own style despite there's still obvious influence, ahah). Yoshihiro Nagamori's works also influenced my art a lot as well! These titles are quite underappreciated when it comes to retro/classic anime style but they're def my biggest inspirations during childhood days until now :'D

Admittedly, I....wasn't content with it for the longest time because sdghjsfsf I often felt left out or outdated because nobody uses this style anymore lately?? But then I can't seem to find a style that I like better no matter how much I've tried to change it and in the end I've just stuck with it despite my strong complex towards this style, haha. I'm trying to regain my confidence with this style though, and TH in general have been helping me in that lately ;;w;;

I started drawing way before I was even in kindergarten I believe?? Though I think I got serious at it when I was 9 or so. My mom really pushed me to start drawing because all my siblings were super good at them during that time that I had to follow along too hahah

Swissy

Kogami This is a general question i ask tbh lmao. But how did you think of your name?

Ooon another topic- Your artstyle has an old anime feeling into it. Are there any particular franchise, game, or anime that inspired your artstyle? Are you content with it? On another note, when did you start drawing?

Oooo another indonesian!! Halo!

About my favourite element, i think i have to go with water. It's calming and nice to touch personally. There's this feeling of serene when i swim in it or just touch it. Plus, blue is my favourite colour! It's just so aesthetically pleasing lol. My fsvourite planet has to be Earth because i live in it HAHA- No, not really. Then again, i love nature and the colour blue so Earth is my favourite. Sure Earth is corrupted by us filthy humans but it aint stopping me from loving god's creation.

glizzrybear

Swissy

oOO an Indonesian henlo halo!! Aaa aku liat karakter2 mu design-wise majority kayak ada unsur fantasy and rpg-ish(?) gitu. Inspirasimu buat designs karaktermu apa? :D
Dan banyak design yang ada unsur nature(???) gitu kayak air, awan, planet, etc. What's your favorite natural elements? What's your favorite planet?

(LOL jadi banyak, sorry xD)

Heya!

Username: Its basically please + my name. You know like how some people exaggerate please in a way that it sounds like PUHleeeeeazee or something. I just added my name at the end so it's puhlizzy haha. I seem to like to do that a lot;; another username of mine is glizzrybear which is grizzlybear re-scrambled to form my name.......

Character organizing: Hm.. Because I wanna group my OCs who are in the same worlds together! I tried using folders, but I don't like how they don't all show up on the front page, and will only show up when you click the "Show All" button or something. And if you click that, they'll be jumbled up because of the alphabetical order. I did use the emoji in front of their names so at least they'll be "jumbled within their worlds" per se but I still just didn't like how I need to click "Show All". It kinda doesn't make sense why it bothered me so much haha.

At least now its not cluttered and everyone's arranged in their own worlds, and people can see what designs each stories include! ..or something like that.

Alexg47

puhlizzyy ... That's an interesting and unique username, where did it come from? Also why do you categorize your characters the way you do?

"What would you say be your favorite element to personify, or which do you think is your most developed one?" Favorite element to personify is probably Tin, doing research for him was fun, and most developed is Aluminum, she's kinda the main character.

"Do you think you would make a noble gas element oc or possibly a radioactive one someday (if you haven't already done so ;O; )" Well yeah, I actually have already, I guessing those kinds of element are your favs then?
