Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 6 years, 12 days ago (Edited 6 months, 2 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

URETHRA

Kogami i will not be asking you what is your favorite anime but i will be asking what specifically got you into anime? for me i always loved how abstract the characters were and i like fantasy better than reality

---

cati when i was younger i used to use a lot of different other dollmakers and i would make a lot of original characters but rn picrew is a huge obsession for me since i'm a dress up gamer boy at heart. i like purchasing and making my own characters too! i guess it's just what i prefer at the time. i do want to post my original characters onto toyhouse soon but most of them are mostly written descriptions and i need to make a visual representation.

as for the different stories, i try making all of my characters be in the same world if possible. furries and humanoids are separated into two worlds but other than that, time and location is the only thing separating them from not meeting up. i don't like making too many universes and i'd rather prefer they all live in their own locations in the day but they return to my headspace/dream brain at night and they all talk to each other and interact but barely remember each other (or well, the dreams) when the next day comes. like if i ever start writing again (which i hope is soon) i would leave in little easter eggs of other characters from other series in that specific one to know that they're not alone.

Wow, I love your art~! How long I've you been drawing for and what inspired you to start? How did you improve, and how often do you draw? Sorry for all the questions, feel free to only answer one if you want~

Lilina

Darkanra

I see that your really love Pokémon! When did you start to get into the series? What's your favorite main series game, and what's your favorite Pokémon? Also, what generation of Pokémon do you like the most? All Pokémon-related questions aside, you said that you also like anime/manga, so what's your number 1 favorite anime/manga?

This one's pretty tough to answer, but Apollo the Strange uses a bit more of inspiration from old cartoons for my characters, but I'm completely unsure about where I got the idea for Alt. Britain, though. Anyway, about my artstyle, thank you so much! The general linework for humanoids is an influence to the OPUS series, and while I never played OPUS, the artstyle in these games are fantastic. Also, I've been influenced with the paper-styled works from other users.

FellowPigeon

Historia I saw that a couple of your stories and world's were based on/set in historical periods (specifically Alt. Britain and Apollo the Strange), is there any specific aspects of that history that you find particularly interesting or has been a source of inspiration in your characters? Apart from that, I have to mention your art style, I really love it! I'm sorry if you have already been asked this but I'd be curious to know what you consider your largest influences on it

Thank you! I've always really loved and been interested in pigeons but the idea for the username was that at the time I was making it I had recently gone through a bunch of Wikipedia pages and ended up reading a bunch about pigeons that had won medals during WWII (plus this very good video!) I also really like double word usernames, especially ones that sound slightly cryptic or nonsensical so on a whim, I went with FellowPigeon (pigeon_medal on Instagram) The profile picture was something I drew a little after because I couldn't get the idea for the matching picture out of my head. In the end, I'm very glad I went for the pigeon theming because it's gotten me even more curious in learning more about them, they are much more interesting than most people give them credit for haha.

sar-dine Is there any hidden meaning behind your username?

I actually had a dream about a facility for breeding humans, it was used for testing different things on people to help the "normal people". So, I made an oc with it! Kyle is actually not anything special, I just really like mutations and things that don't belong. I thought it would go well with the dream I had so I made him and a story behind it!

AlleycatIrony

Babygirlexe what was the inspiration behind kyle's design and story? he's p interesting and i'd love to know more tbh :0

i've actually only been keeping fish (myself) for almost two years? not too long tbh! i actually got my first betta (sammy) around march the 23rd 2017! this was actually one of the first pics i ever took of him and it's not the best bc i don't think i had a phone then, only my old ipod - and this is one of my fave photos of him overall :D
the two bettas i currently have are daisy and peaches! two little ladies :3 daisy's a wild-type betta (i'm thinking betta simplex specifically but i'm not certain) while peachie is a splendens female

up until recently i p much centered my fishkeeping around bettas (but i also had tetras and stuff too), but after phe passed away i wasn't ready to get another betta (still not tbh) so i recently got guppies :D their names are spiderfish, silver surfer, baby, thing #1, thing #2, la cruix, banana boy, and i'm not sure 100% what to name our orange guppy but it's either gonna be smthn dumb like V8 or carrot juice
currently i also have corydora catfish, two bristlenose catfish called suck and cuck, kuhli loaches, ember tetra, neon tetra, and black tetra!

i grew up w/ fish bc my mum kept them, but she uh
wasn't v good at fishkeeping :'/ she always let the tanks get half empty and murky and always fairly empty? like not rly any decorations or anything? and she always kept fish like goldfish and guppies together which... u shouldn't do

so ever since i was little i'd always wanted my own tanks so i could take care of them properly lmao

actually, now that i think abt it, sammy wasn't my first betta! my first betta was called rainbow, and i had him when i was maybe like... seven-ish? tho, bringing back my mum's bad fish care thing, she put him in a thin, tall vase so he didn't last long rip

i think i'm getting a little off topic oops
but ye besides bettas and the above fish i've mentioned, the fish i grew up w/ were guppies, fantail goldfish, comet goldfish, silver sharks, and crayfish of all things
i plan on getting another tank for black moor goldfish eventually bc they're my faves! i briefly had them before sammy, but unfortunately i hadn't cycled my tank properly (common first time mistake but a sad one nonetheless) and they got NTS and passed away after abt 6 hours - their names were gus and evan ;~;

anyway i've kept a lot of fish overall and i'd like to try all sorts more in the future now that i'm a lot more experienced in fishkeeping! like electric yellow cichlids, always loved them :0

AlleycatIrony

Because I adore your bettamaids

How long have you been keeping betas? Which one was your first and which ones do you currently have? Have you kept other types of fish before?

Thank you for the questions~

It always makes me happy to hear that someone likes my username. I don't recall you asking about my name origin before, but I'm always up for talking about it. I made it up 7 years ago on a whim. My friend convinced me to make a dA account and so I smashed a bunch of words together until I came up with something I really liked. The words themselves don't hold a lot of meaning since I just panic made it. But, it's starting to hold a lot of sentimental value. I'm TenMomentsTill on everything, my IRL friends call me Ten, and I've had the username for nearly a decade. Without a doubt, I'm going to be using this username for a long time to come.

As for favourite spooky urban legend, I do enjoy hearing about Skinwalker Ranch.  It just sticks out in my mind in comparison to the other urban legends because of the memories I have associated with it. As a kid, my dad and I would drive past it at least once a month and he'd point it out to me every time. It didn't help that the sun was always setting right as we did. In the late winter and early spring, it was extra spooky to young me since the highway in front of it is always littered with dead deer from who perished from the winter or car strikes.

I remember you mentioning that your name is a reference to Pokemon Sun and Moon! What is your favorite Pokemon game and why? Are you excited for Sword and Shield?

First of all, hello, my birthday twin!! c:

Hi there, I saw you like music, what type of music do you listen to?

I like a lot of things, but indie rock most of all! Some of my favorite bands are The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Nada Surf, and the Thermals.

Also, I love that you put your cat on Toyhouse, and I'm sorry for your loss for him, what a beautiful and cute animal. Where and when did you get him, if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you. He was a real sweetheart, and I'm so glad we got to share our lives with him for 19 wonderful years. We got him and his brother Mickey as kittens from a North Shore Animal League adoption van at a county fair when I was a kid! We already had an older cat (Lucky) at home and my mom insisted we would only look, but oops, we fell in love with them at first sight. : p Here's some pictures of the three of them as babies.

And where did you come up with the idea for Catband?

This is always tricky to answer, because it evolved over time from older characters and stories I had! The idea for a comic about a band competition, though, came back in high school when I was doodling a lot of Roadie and Silver and other musicians and idly thinking about what their story would be. I'd previously written about Jill and Amber's band, so it made sense to tell something of an origin story, and originally the concept was something of an American Idol parody. Over time it evolved into something more sincere, about the local live music scene and the changing city, and the relationships between people, as I figured out what the story should really be about.

Thanks for the questions!

Hello! I noticed that you're both a musician and an author. What kind of musician are you, and do you write your own music? Also, it's nice to see another fantasy author around here. How many books have you completed and/or published?

Aarix

Nope, I'm not on Flight Rising! It's always interested me, but with how many other websites and games I'm active on, I can't really justify getting involved in another one.

I started horse riding way back in 2012 (though I'd wanted to since I was a kid), and did it up until late 2016(?) when I had to give it up because neither me nor my parents could afford it anymore. I used to go hacking weekly, which means I went riding with a group of other people over rural terrain like forests and cliffs. It was scarily expensive, but a lot of fun for my fantasy-obsessed self who could imagine they were a knight riding across medieval landscapes on horseback. I've never owned a horse and don't plan to, since I don't have anywhere to keep it, nor could I ever afford one. Plus it seems like too much responsibility - I'd rather just ride regularly again.

Thanks for the questions! I've never been asked about the horse riding thing before, so it was cool!

Aarix

RadiantRaindragon

dragons huh 👀 are you on Flight Rising by any chance?
Also sorry if this is obscure, but I was poking around on your dA and saw you're into horseriding. How long have you been into that? And how often do you get the chance? Have you ever owned horses of your own? If not, would you ever like to? (I'm not a horsey person but my best friend is, so it caught my eye haha)

Hello again! :v And ooh good question!

Honestly I don't have any spectacular dreams of going anywhere with it, I just (re)made the thread for something fun & different to try-- Voice acting (and acting in general) actually isn't something I've really done outside of that thread, (or its since-archived predecessor from last year)-- unless you count getting regularly picked on in highschool english to read out bits of whatever we were reading on account of my peerless capacity for vocal projection ;v there's definitely a secret theater kid lurking somewhere within me though, so this is a good way to indulge them in the comfort of my own closet haha (literally-- my closet has the best acoustics in my house so that's where I do any recording -- my phone mic needs all the help it can get :'v )

As for what ~inspired me~ to give it a shot in the first place... really it was just watching cartoons/video games and being like "haha silly voices :^)" & then I was like wait a second.... I can do silly voices as well... what's stopping me.....? :^o

Maybe if I get around to throwing my RPG together one day, I could voice a few people in it? But that's a long way off at the moment :p I would like to invest in a decent mic setup though (both for this and for music-related stuff)-- it'd be cool to see what more I could accomplish then, & would be good incentive to take it to the next level...... whatever that level even is :'v

So, I've caught you a lot on your voice acting thread; what made you interested in picking that up, and do you have any plans for that talent in the future? Future plans could be big or small scale, just whatever you deem important!

Well, I've been singing for about seven years now, and playing everything from guitar to piano to jaw harp with varying years in between. I'll be honest, when I started doing music, I had no idea it is what I would have wanted to do. I started doing Choir entirely by random choice, and I just fell in love with with it.
