"Lost Within" - Fivefold

And all you've wanted was just so much more
This world has taken a hold
Don't let 'em get your soul
The silence
You feel it
Cold as a winter storm
This world has taken a hold
Don't let 'em get your soul

When Auris arrived in this land he was full of hope and wonder. He used to be a soldier of the Trinity Tree, but he was unhappy there. He was doing his best to help the animals of the land, but all his efforts seemed futile. He may have caught a criminal stealing food in the underground city under the roots, but what did it matter when on the surface war was brewing, lives were lost every day and he could do nothing about it. He could arrest miscreants for petty crimes, but it was impossible to arrest an army, even if they were being aggressive and disrupting the peace of his district.

He thought it would be better in the new land. Sen has shown him that he was a great leader and the things Night Watch did actually mattered. They resolved issues before they got too far, they solved mysteries and saved lives. That was exactly what he wanted. At first, it seemed that his dreams would actually come true, but then he was transferred to the district of Kingscardine and learned the awful truth about his supervisors.

Auris felt lost and alone. He did not know what to do. Stand up to his superiors and risk losing everything he worked for or keep doing his job and put a blind eye on their dubious business. Neither sounded appealing.

Iron bars are hell to break
Tell me now, do you know what's at stake?
Your whole life in a blank stare haze
You walk around like the end of days
And I know you're feeling low
Feel like you've lost control
But the darkness that you know
It's not your home and you're not alone

Auris had big plans for his future, but life rarely goes the way we want it to.

When he left home to become a guard he knew that he would have to start from the lowest-ranked member. That was okay. Auris is smart and ambitious and he was certain that if he made some effort and did hard work he would be promoted. From a guard to a sergeant, eventually maybe even a captain. He would have a nice place of his own, he would be able to support his family and he’d gain respect of the people around him. But more than anything, he was happy that the harder he worked the larger effect he would have on his world. He would protect those in need and punish evildoers. Little by little, he would be creating a better place to live.

Theoretically, he was climbing the ladders of pride ranks, but despite his efforts the world wasn’t changing. Not for the better. Not thanks to him. Seeing that put cracks into the rose-coloured spectacles he seemed to view the world through. He managed to escape his home world where animals were short sighted and would not see reason or consensus, but preferred to engage in a pointless war. He thought that in this one things would be different, but the ones he met are just as egoistic and blunt as his previous companions. They only care about their own lives and material wealth, when they could be working together to make lives better for everyone. He feels imprisoned by the way life works. Even after travelling into a different dimension he still found things so familiar, so saddening. Things he does not know how to overcome.

Crawl out of the hole you're in
Who you are is not who you've been
Now's the time to sink or swim
Will you fight the tide or get lost within
And I know you're feeling low
Feel like you've lost control
But the darkness that you know
It's not your home and you're not alone

He thought of his home. Of the person he wanted to be and the one he became. They were not the same person. When did he stray from his path? Why was he becoming more and more like the mindless guards he hated and less like the hero he pictured his future self to be? Instead of putting all of his efforts into protecting civilians he was considering leaving their fates in the hands of a corrupt leader. He was backing down and following orders without asking questions. To change that meant to stand up to his superiors. To show initiative. To conquer his fears. To put everything he worked for on the line. But he wouldn’t have to do it alone.

Before, in his home world, he couldn’t count on anyone. Of course he had his family and they were always there to lift his spirits, but they couldn’t influence his captain or change the way the guard was organised and run. Now there was the Night Watch. He had no way of knowing whether they would agree to help and how much they could actually do, but Auris had a feeling that Sen wouldn’t refuse his request. From the time he saw him in the world of the Trinity Tree and later in his own district, he learnt that Sen thought a lot like himself. However, he was much more experienced and influential so having his support would mean a lot. From what he’s heard, he managed to stop a war once. With achievements like that, nothing was impossible. And there was also Shadow. The one that started it all.

I'm callin' out to you
Can you hear me?
They can't break you down
Let you hit the ground
I promise you it won't be long
You're feeling overwhelmed here
Drowned by the pain and the fear
The sun will come with the dawn

Shadow was the one who showed Auris the world as it truly was. If it wasn’t for Shadow, it would have been a long time until he discovered it for himself. Maybe he never would. Although Shadow shattered his optimism and faith in Kingscardine, he was also the one to restore them. Shadow has suffered injustice and cruelty first hand. He knew better than anyone how things were run here. But he didn’t give up. He never accepted it. And though his ways of fixing everything are completely different to those Auris would try, their goal is ultimately the same.

Even though Auris can’t count on his family here since they are back in another world, nor his immediate company, even though he can’t even be sure if the commanders of the Dreamcatchers district will give him support he knows that he can count on Shadow. He became his first friend here and has been since. Shadow put his trust in Auris and started counting on him for help. Before they met he’s always been alone. That’s part of the reason of Auris’ motivation. He always wanted to make the world a better place for all lions to live in, but now it’s also personal and he wants to help Shadow achieve their mutual dream.
