IN NOVA CAEL, magic exists to some degree, or as the locals call it - khana. Some might have a stronger than usual intuition, some might read you like an open book, few might seem to get everything they wish for. They're not exactly magical abilities in their stereotypical sense - no one can control the four elements and there are no fire-breathing demons and angels who are able to materialise everything out of thin air.

Khana can be learnt if you have that special spark in you. It's usually passed down by blood relation and it's expected from the user to expand it. One of the more notable khana abilities belongs to the family of Lewandowski, who are known for their extremely strong intuition that could pass as them "feeling" the future.

While khana in mortals is rare and barely prominent, khana in demigods is much stronger and noticeable - all demigods come with a certain magical aura to them. Most of the time, their abilities reflect their purpose in the world or who they are as a person - it is unheard of for a demigod to have khana that manifests in a way that conflicts with their persona.

Khana is also the thing that helps the Eminences keep an active connection with the gods’ souls. One cannot be an Eminence without khana, for it would make the connection impossible. Soulspeakers also have a certain amount of khana running through their veins, but that is obtained through the ritual of becoming a soulspeaker - they are not naturally born with it.

Khana is strengthened by the user and their surrounding individuals’ belief that the magic works. This is why khana usually does not work at all in The West, for they believe no gods, let alone magic, can exist - it is also why it would be a miracle for a Western-born canine or other animal to possess khana.

Either way, magic in Nova Cael is a rare and fragile thing - it’s much weaker than what it used to be aeons ago. It’s unlikely that khana will ever be more than a gimmick for demigods and a useful tool to mortals. As of now, the magic of Nova Cael is slowly fading away …

Demigods

Demigods are children of mortals and gods, born out of a mortal soul's love and loyalty towards a god; born out of a god's love and appreciation towards a mortal. They are a rare occurrence in the world of Nova Cael and the birth of a demigod is considered a huge blessing to the region its parent comes from.

Children of gods usually have very intense, unbalanced personalities. They could either try to be one with nature and help everyone they can until they drop dead or they can try to murder everyone because of a self-pitying inner narrative. Demigods aren't born with extremely intense powers, but they do possess some sort of power over the mysterious khana. They also have a heightened aura that might be noticeable to others around them - some of them might also have weird attributes to their looks which make them stand out from their normal counterparts.
